Heres the latest on Turtle (and I still havent figued out how to send a picture, but Im working on it). He has filled out nice and will be a very handsome boy if I can keep him clean for more than 5 minutes. I think its a game with him, let momma clean me up and the minute she turns me loose find the biggest, deepest mudhole and roll 2 or three times. Anyways, he goes off for training in 2 weeks, so I have been doing some groundwork with him. He tries to jump out of his skin anytime you raise your arms/hands. So, over the weekend I worked with him on that. He did great, but whats really funny about that is Im sure my neighbors think that I have probably lost my mind completely. Throwing my arms around and making noises at this poor scared horse. Turtle did great I think he thinks that I have lost my mind also. The next day we tried it with the empty grocery sack. Good lord you would have thought that it was going to eat him alive. But after a few minutes he just stood there and let me shake it all over around him (yes, that neighbor was probably watching me do this again and is ready to turn me in to the authorities for animal endangerment or have me committed to the loony bin) He is great about ropes being around his legs and being tossed around him. He doesnt particularly like his winter blanket, but doesnt throw a fit when its being put on or taken off. He is coming along great and has a very sweet personality.

My girl, Kiva (CBER Neon), doesn't like things over her head either. And she still isn't too happy about plastic bags, tarps, etc. We just keep working on it. I inadvertently startle here fairly often still. I can't wait to hear about Turtle's training adventures.

Well, its day 4 of Turtle's training and I wanted to post an update. I talked with the trainer yesterday and she said that her impression of Turtle was that he had never been "broke". She thinks that somebody just put a saddle on him and cowboyed him around and that is why when he was scared or uncertain he would just freeze. The first day she saddled him up and longed him he just worked himself into a lather, but the second day he was much better and understood more what she was asking of him. Yesterday she was going to ground drive him some, and Im not sure how that went. Her overall impression of him was that he was a kind & gentle horse that hadnt necessarily been abused but definetely cowboyed. She said he was smart and picked up on the things that she has been teaching him fairly quickly. I havent been out to see him yet as its a fairly good distance from my home to the trainer so I plan on going out next Tuesday and I also wanted to give her some time to evaluate his needs without me hovering around all the time. Next week if all goes well she will start riding him. Im not on any time limit so both Stacey and I agreed that we wouldnt bring him home until I feel he is safe for trail riding. It broke my heart to leave him because he had that look that he was being abandoned and our other horse was heartbroken that his little buddy had left him.

Went and saw Turtle on Saturday, and the trainer has been riding him since the second day. He was like a new horse, and I got my first ride on him! Im going again tonight to see him and maybe ride, and I have to admit at this point he is smarter than I am. I need ro relearn how I have been riding as far as my cues go. he looks absolutely relaxed and happy which is wonderful to see. He's still not sure if he likes other horses so that will definetly need to be worked on. So far so good.

Are you kidding me? ? Big smile doesnt even describe it. I called my parents and talked their ears off about how good he was, came to work on Monday and gave the lady that i work with a big hug for recommending her trainer. I rode again last night and he and I did much better as far as communicating with each other went. He has a BIG stride

Well Turtle had his first trail ride last night and much to my surprise he was very good. A little spooky at first but handled the trails really well. They were pretty easy as far as trails go so nothing to hard to handle but he would not get his feet wet in the mud puddles so that will need some work. He really lives up to his name as he is definetly in no hurry to go places so at least I will be able to sit back and relax and enjoy the ride. He is so sensitive on his sides that I really have to remind myself to be soft with the cues because if I put too much pressure on him he acts like he is coming out of his skin. His next adventure is camping this coming weekend at Buck Creek so he will get all kinds of trail experience there. Im really looking forward to that, not going to push him hard just some easy going trails to get the experience.

I thought that I had posted these before, but I guess not. My bad............Here's my boy I had ridden him the day before and was letting the horses enjoy the back yard grass. This is where I found him on the porch in front of the tack room. I guess he was trying to tell his momma something

I love this boy to death, he is coming along very good. I have to say that I have never seen a horse so frightened of new things in my life, he acts as if Im his security blanket. If I dont panic he doesnt. I am a very proud momma, I still cant believe that he ended up where he did.

Well Turtle had his first experience being ponied (at least with me) and he did great. I have to say Ken's horse Sampson is a true angel because every now and again Turtle would slip back some and bite Sampson in the butt! I think the little stinker was trying to get me thrown off, and every now and again he would be up by my leg and I could tell the wheels of his mind were working and wondering if it would be a good idea to bite mom in the foot. Im happy to say he never took a bite out of me but I was ready with a well placed foot to the chops should he try (you dont bite the hand or foot that feeds you). He is in need of a set of new shoes and desperately needs to be worked to get the bucks out of him before I feel good enough to get on. Weather permitting in the next week or so we will get all of that done. He is so much better about being around Sampson now, its really nice they are almost buddies. I catch them every so often nibbling on each other but neither one wants to let on that they actually like one another. I dont have any current pictures mainly because he has been so dirty & muddy I cant bring myself to take pictures with him looking like that.
