SUNDANCE ( Hobbs )1 y/o -12.3h -Haflinger Gelding
Post by nickie on Mar 8, 2006, 9:49am
HOBBS - Darling yearling, approx. 12.3hh, Haflinger Gelding. Flaxen mane and tail. He is curious and friendly, but not handled much, had halter on the day he came to the lot, but not since. He will come up to us but is shy and we can't just slip a halter on him.. He has a club foot which is pictured in the additional pictures. He is still young enough to have the surgery to correct this and with proper after-care would probably look normal. The way to tell prognosis would be to have an x-ray done to show postion of coffin bone and possible degree of correction with desmotomy done, anyone with questions on this can talk to Heidi. He may respond partially to proper foot care also. He is a cute guy who will not get much bigger, older horses boss him at the lot .

He is adorable. Look at that face. All of the Haflingers I've known were wonderfully intelligent individuals.
Anyone have a contact at any of the university teaching hospitals that might be able to get his club foot fully assessed for a reduced rate ? From the photo it almost looks like it would be classified as grade II which don't respond as well to surgery and corrective trimming. He's such a sharp looking guy its hard to imagine someone didn't deal with it earlier when it would have been easier to improve it.
I'll post him on www.draftsforsale.com .

Can anyone tell us in general terms what could be done for his clubfoot? I don't know much about this condition. Does it look like this guy's leg is actually shorter than the others? Could it be a tendon problem? (Probably a combo of both...)
Gosh darn it, to have horsey love twice in one week just isn't fair!

That is a pretty bad club. I have a mare with one that was similar at one time. She had a surgery and some rehab and is now very comfortable. Hers is not perfect even now. They are sometimes fixable but it will take some time, a good surgeon, and some luck.

Typical treatments for club foot are corrective trimming to lower the heels and reconstruction of the toes with acrylic material and as mentioned before desmotomy, which is where the check ligament is cut. Club foot is the end result of contracted tendons, but in some cases there was another root cause for the problem that caused the contracted tendons. Once they start walking on their toe the tendons continue to contract over time. So it can be a cyclic thing. Its hard to say what the root cause of the problem is in his case without a full workup.
Some horses continue to function just fine with grade II club foot. Long term if it isn't adjusted you have to worry about degeneration of the pedal bone.

my farrier was just here to check up on Star, and i had him come in and check this picture out on this horse. He said that can be corrected, he also said that all horses seem to have 1 "clubbier" foot than the other. he said to not let this discourage you, it can be fixed....(he is not a vet, just a certified farrier)
So please save this little guy! there is hope for him!!!

If he can move on it now, slow, steady work might help a lot before surgery.
I had a mustang pony, Magic, 13.1, who at 28 was going strong. My farrier just trimmed him and since I got him at age 22, we didn't try to "fix" anything. Magic could walk, trot and canter evenly. Unless you looked at his feet, people didn't know he had a club foot. It was just like Hobbs'. Magic was never lame and was ridden in the arena 3 days a week for lessons for small riders. He was trail ridden for about 1 hour once a week. We even took him to a few small shows.
I would say that Hobbs is worth the risk, especially if he can move comfortably on the foot now.

OK, whew, I finally got registered here so I can post!
I am the one who put in an application for this little guy, he is SO cute! Look at that face!! I can post his bail, can someone help me get him to the SF Bay area?
I have two other yearlings, I'll geld him (if he isn't) and he will get to grow up with friends, and I've always wanted a haflinger!!!
I have a farrier who does natural trims, and if that doesn't do it, a great vet, and there is UC Davis... My mare 25 years ago had a club, and did fine, just frequent trims.... and shoes for heavy riding to keep her from wearing off the toe. She was totally sound for riding all day on hard trails to running gymkhana...
so, this is all new to me, anything else I need to do?
I emailed Ryan, no word yet, did an app.... what else???

He is soooooo adorable! I had an excellent broodmare that was clubfoot (injured as a foal) and we kept it corrected with trimming and shoes (on her front feet) for the 23 years we had her! No extra expense required and she was a beautiful mover!

Welcome pnp4kidz. We have an expending group here in the Bay Area. It might help if you go back into your profile, and just say WHERE in the Bay Area........south bay, SF.......you can be as general or specific as you want- then people won't keep asking you, 'where are you located"? We have 2 new adopters in the Penin/South bay area, and one IN San Francisco. Also, check out and join, the California Friends of CBER....it's up in the General notes . somewhere. I'm sure you will get a lot of help with transportation- I did.....so I'll be the first to pledge something. Don't be shy about reminding me when the time comes.

Although the timing is tight you might be able to get things done in time to ship this weekend. My pony had vet work done very quickly. The network working the feedlot is awesome and will help all they can.
I adopted Pumpkin and she had a foal, Pi, 6 days after she got here. It was quite a Christmas present.
I am in the Fairfield/Napa area. Let me know if I can help.
Lorie Wright has dropped a horse off at my place before and is a great hauler.

pnp4kidz,
This is not such a waiting game as the PMU's. I have 3 PMU's and I know how that goes. I just got a CBER horse, he was called Flash on the lot but I have changed his name to Ranger. I broke down and put in my application on a Tuesday and he arrived here 9 days later! I live a lot further away than you do. I am in the Imperial Valley in the SE corner of California. It cost me about $600 for transportation. But you are a lot closer so you would be a lot cheaper probably in the $300 to $400 range. I am sure that you will here from Ryan very soon. She is great. And my references were called the day after I sent my application in. As to the Coggins, Ryan will give you the number of the vet's clinic and you call and arrange that. I also had the vet give all the shots and a soundness check. So my bill was $150. But for the Coggins and the Brand inspection, it was $43 total. Good luck, I am sure glad that you are getting this cute boy. I even like his name. Of course, I love the comic strip Calvin and Hobbs. Now you need to adopt a friend for him that you could call Calvin. LOL ;o) Mary Jane

TEAM of fancy 4 year old Haflinger mares. Broke to drive by the Amish. $2,500 each. Bob Hodnefield, Milton Freewater, OR
so i just wanted to say, that his price is a steal with a clubby foot or not!
edited to add: i didnt post this add to show that you would be getting a good deal. i posted it to show that he has potential, and not to let the clubby foot get in the way. i hope that makes sense....

I know ya mean well, but I have to say this, we are not trafficking in flesh here! By that I mean I do not want someone to get this guy because its a "good deal", I want someone to get this guy because hes a live creature that needs a great home and in turn will offer his new home something... love. I want him to go to someone who sees beyond money and wants a special friend. Idealistic? maybe, but thats what I hope for all these guys.

Really though you can't help but look and worry and save once your here
Also wasn't Hytyme heading Cali way soon with the mules? Though I used Lori for Codelia and she did an excellent job with my difficult charge.
The vet clinic was wonderful, (very patient with my outloud thinking) promptly sent me a reciept and charge slip and was reasonably priced. I got Coggins, brand, health and all vacs but westnile for $112. AND they had to chute her to do that!

Ohh, addiction is really bad for me!! Last year we were sucked into getting 4 PMU mares and 2 weanlings!!! ack!!! we (my sister and I own the ranch together) are complete addicts... sigh.
oh, yes, all 4 of our mares were preggers, LUCKY US!! anyway... we are nuts, but we love 'em. just had a few sold and leased out, so we are feeling flush again... and we were getting bored with all 'stable' horses and none to work on!!! I figured we'd get another founder, but a club foot will 'do'... my kids will love him to death... and our 2 coming yearlings will think it is just dandy to have a new playmate! We are planning on fencing the back 2+ acres (it is only done on 3 sides now) to finish another pasture... guess it'll be the yearling pasture this year!!! it's a beautiful hill side with old oak trees (200-400 year old oaks) running thru it and lots of 'virgin' grass growing down there. a great place to grow and become a 'real horse'... I have a couple of gelding 'uncles' who love teaching manners... (one rescue is totally afraid of all other horses, so babies are good!) and my farrier is already jazzed at the prospect of a new project for us!!! (she brings us most of our founder rescues!). If he can't be ridden, we just bought an easy entry cart, and started learning to drive, and I even bought a harness for our 13.2 hh pony so we can teach the boy to drive!!! yipee! I get a haffie AND to drive... was this meant to be???
OK, I'm holding on my app, and hoping for help in transport stuff... I have his bail ready to send when I'm told what to do.... where do they go to get the Coggins done, etc??? he can't ship to me until that comes back, right?
thanks,
Beth

I believe there is at least one person on here who mentioned being a farrier. They might be able to give more details of the corrective trimming and such.

I forgot to mention in some more severe cases corrective shoes are also used to treat club foot.

Okay guys, there is an individual that may be interested in hobbs (per a baen post), but would need help with shipping. She indicated she could pay the bail and has sent in an app. How do you feel about raising shipping fees? V.

Calgal98,
if you can, check to see if the interested party has an application in. If not, please ask them to submit one as soon as possible. Also, do you know where the person is located?

lindal...she/he has sent in an application...I don't know if she has been on here yet or not, but I'm assuming so. I believe they are located in the bay area. Will pursue it more. I left a note on the chat board. There is quite a thread going on about nibbles and the new group. I'm following it closely to see what come of it.

Yes Patty, I am going to the Napa/Santa Rosa area, probably by the end of next week.

I sent pics, but hope they don't need special ones... I have mostly horses pictures here at work, the barn is there too... fencing, is that what they are looking at???

I'll let you all know if I find out more about whether I'm approved or not, then I'll be hoping for some help paying to get him down here!

pnp4kidz,
I hope all goes well getting him.

LOL ;o) Mary Jane

i just saw this ad in the nickel saver tonight...

Welcome PNP! (this place can be a bit adicting..) oops did I say that aloud??

I have his bail ready to send when I'm told what to do.... where do they go to get the Coggins done, etc??? he can't ship to me until that comes back, right?
thanks,
Beth

He's definitely Very CUTE. I'm guessing everyone is thinking that will win him a home more easily than some of the others
I know I was trying to convince my DP that I needed a pony(Hobbs) for my birthday. He seemed to think maybe I was a little old for a pony though
