Dean has a Draft horse sized heart. Passion is out in Belfair and is o.k. there for awhile longer. The gal there wants to bring in a feedlot horse for herself but one that is rideable. Passion is an "unknown" .... but we now have another awesome home for a horse from the lot! I would like to try to bring Passion here and scope out her issues. If I re-home her in the future I would want her to go somewhere that they know exactly what they are getting into... and on the selfish note she has an awesome neck to scratch.... her lips wiggle and she grunts!

Yeah... getting bute. She had tablets, I delivered paste today. SMZ's just in case we have a secondary infection. Left rear broke three weeks ago / Right rear abscess, packing with sugar/iodine everyday for 6 days and every other now. left it open today for awhile it was so hot and dry. Looks clean. She got some greens yesterday and is sore in front today. Pink Pads... Gloria is not going to let her out anymore. She will be coming here as soon as I can get her here. I am a big fan of icing. I know not everyone agrees but I really believe when they get sore in front the ice takes the inflammation down. It can be alot of fun with draftie feet.... but I think it is what keeps my Clyde standing. Ice/bute... Who is your vet? I like bare feet. But is there a time when shoes are best? Debating this with a friend...

After reading through this thread it seems to me that even though you know what to do it would be in the best interest of both you and Passion if you would accept Dean's offer. She is, after all, our resident expert Draft Drill Master and full-time caregiver.
I say this not to be mean or to judge you, but rather to give Passion what she deserves on a 24x7 basis. Because, isn't helping Passion the actual goal here? I think it would be tremendously selfless and heroic of you to let Passion go to where Auntie Dean could hover over her and you could take some time to get your place in order and to get over your money difficulties.
If Dean ever offered to take one of my seriously dented horses, I'd jump at the offer...if it included unlimited visitation.
Just my 2 cents plus inflation and devaluation and a 25% tip.

Hi!!
It is so great that you are helping this mare. I am sorry that she is having trouble. I talked with my husband about her and the issues she is having, and how you are having trouble providing for her, and we'd like to offer to help you with Passion by providing her with a retirement home here at our farm in CA. I have a Percheron X and have lots of experience with lameness/health issues with him.....we are (unfortunately) frequent flyers at a specialty lameness clinic here and have a number of trips coming up over the next 3 months for our draft.....and could take Passion there for the specialized help she sounds like she needs.
Anyway....give it some thought. I just want to put this out there so that you know you have options. I'd be happy to arrange for transport, etc. Just let me know.
Also, Dean at PEC knows so much about drafts, and I know she has offered to help you (and sorry if I step on any toes, just want to put yet another offer out there). She is far more experienced than I with draft rehabilitation, and of course is much closer. I hope you will consider working with her!
I am glad that you have so many options, and that the people on the RO board are stepping with offers to help you! Kind of like the village raising a horse. Thanks for helping Passion out of her predicament. Let me know if you would like more info about my facility, situation!

Hi Laura, It sounds like your girl might be either laminitic, or abcessing... more likely the prior. It is really a horsie emergency, especially in a draft. You should call your vet, and while you are waiting for the return call, please run to the hardware store, and get some of the 2 in. blue insulation foam board, or a package of those foam mats that come in puzzle type pieces... then cut a piece of either to fit under her entire foot, and duct tape that on. this is EXTREMELY important as drafts are so huge, you can lose them if you allow the coffin bone to drop down and crush the sole. If she lays down, LET HER. ENCOURAGE her to stay down... it is saving her feet from trauma. Deliver food and water to her wherever she choses to lay.
You will need to get her on a special diet low in carbs and sugars NOW. this mare does look to be Insulin Resistant, and might even have Cushings. Both are VERY treatable, and she will do great, but it will take some management... You need the vet to get out there asap, he will give her pain relief, and verify that it is laminitis... and get labs to diagnose her metabolic condition....
If you are not able to do this financially, I know you are kind of dependant on donations, then it is my suggestion humbly, that you move her in the next day or two to someone who can offer her lifesaving care. You've done such a wonderful thing rescueing her from slaughter, let's band together and actually save her life!
feel free to PM me for specifics of diet, trim, and diagnosis... but all three must be done, asap.... she is beautiful... thanks for going the mile for her!

Laura, I don't know if you are familiar with the work that pnp4kidz does/has done. She and her sister run Founder Rehabilitation Ranch rescue down here in CA. I have been the beneficiary of her help with a Percheron near me. AND, I've met some of her other rehabs in person. She knows what she is talking about! And it's a calling with her. She (and her sister and one daughter) drove all the way over here (~2 hours each way) to consult on the Perch. I know you don't know me, so my endorsement doesn't mean much, but please check out her website and see for yourself. www.founder-rehab.com/If she says this is urgent and life-threatening, then it is. Please don't delay! Passion has been through so much and you've done such a great job with her and I know you have her best interests at heart. And I know you really want to listen to the experts - Beth (pnp4kidz) is an expert. We are SO LUCKY to have her on our board, and with her crazy schedule she manages to jump in with the right technical information time and time again.

My Clyde has chronic laminitis and I am familiar with it. I am on the phone with the vet more times than most parents with a pediatrician! I keep foam insulation and regularly cut "pink slippers"... I have custom ice packs that velcro to draft feet... I don't think you guys understood that I got taken in by a jerk who offered to help her and he created a difficult situation. I got caught in an "act now situation" and it created a funding issue. I believe ANGEL was in a similar circumstance as well as Deb when her horse had a hernia. Temporary issues, but they asked for help on the board. Passion may have chronic laminitis and that is what landed her at the feedlot. I know she has an abscess I just wrote the check for vet visits... Because I wrote that check I have to wait another week to get the material to finish the paddock. That is what happened. Shannon will be bringing her here next weekend. The gal she is with is a farrier. Passion has pads on her feet.... good cleaning and alot of love. I miss her. And she is uncomfortable...she has an abscess and probably laminitis and I do know how serious it is... that is why I am upset... Where she had been she was not getting the care she needed, so I moved her already. But she is far away... But among horsey folks I realize there are 50 opinions in 49 people... and it helps to talk it all through.... there is always something to learn by listening.... like the gelatin as a supplement suggestion, the more I research it the better it sounds even for me... MTA: djrepp I sent a pm this am and pnp4kids you have one, too.

OK, now I am slightly confused. When you made the home offer on Passion you made it sound like you were able to take her... Then you posted this: You have a 30x32 paddock with a 12x12 shelter... Two apple trees for shade and running clear water... You have three friends waiting for you... Now you posted this today (a month later): Because I wrote that check I have to wait another week to get the material to finish the paddock.

Hi Laura, so, I'm confused.. Passion is not at your place now? but she is coming there? you have a Clyde at home now, and two others, but no space for her yet? So, she is at the farrier's... on pads... (foam? or stiff pads like used for shoes?) What did the vet prescribe? and what did the labs look like?
I'm a little worried about your clyde too, I think I read in a post before that this is a young horse? Why chronic laminitis? you should have #1 addressed the cause of the laminitis. It is not something that continues unless it isn't treated.
But, back to Passion, she does need someone now... and it seems to me, from far away of course, that you have followed your heart and unfortunately gotten in a bit over your financial means... if she has to stay at someone's house, and that someone is far away... and you are strapped for a while, I'd like to see her go to Dean's or Katies' and get treated until you CAN bring her home.
Is that something we can help you arrange? I'd be glad to help with that if you need... but I do feel she needs to be treated asap.. I know you are doing what you can, but as you say, she is worse, not better. She really needs a caring person living at the same place as she is... Dean and Katie can do that... today. I think it's a generous offer, Passion deserves the best. And... the country is watching her right now too, since she's had so much press... we really need to do all we can to show them it CAN be done! Otherwise, the nay-sayers will just have more ammo for 'see... it's only the old and infirmed that go to slaughter'... Let's show them she just needed treatment that we CAN offer!
Let me know how we can help arrange to get her moved...

You guys.... Deb had a horse named buckaroo... lame, pain, poor guy.... Deb loved him and gave him a place and let him go when he told her to. Did he have x-rays and blood work and all the latest? But I can't think of ANYONE with any amount of resources that would have been a better place than Deb. Her resources are extremely limited. My Clyde would be dead if I let the "experts" have her. I have learned everything I can about her problems and she has a quality of life my farrier jokingly wishes he had for himself. There is more to learn because I remain open-minded. Tash if you follow Passions full thread the paddock is marked out, not built. It would have been built while she sat with Deb in paid Qt. paddock finished and in she goes in 30 days. Why does that seem to be hard to understand? I ran a few hundred dollars short. I do not hear these kinds of things when Deb has no money and needs help, or Angel or any other time. This jerk that lied to me is an "expert" by the way, fed her alfalfa and gave her grain and sweet cookies. He said Qt is a joke and nothing is wrong with her feet.... But he could take care of her better than I can... Not to mention the lawsuits that he lost for abuse and neglect that I found out about. But he is an expert. He is writting a book and has 30 years rescue experience and let her sit, not bearing weight for over 24 hours....so I'm gun shy. She is doing better today by the phone call I had this afternoon and I will see it with my own eyes in the a.m. I had blood work done and I will check the values against the numbers that Beth told me to look up and go from there. I sit and read about folks doing rescue asking for help all the time... Have you ever run short because someone promised you something and you relied on them? Gloria has worked in equinne rescue for the last 8 years. She is kind and gentle and I trust her. Passion likes her. I did move her to a good place as fast as I could.... for a second time. Gloria was there from day 1. Yes I have a farm. I do not want to bring in an unknown without a separate area to keep her in. That is how I do things here. I will not put her in with the other horses until they get to know each other over the fence. I don't need the heart-ache that can come from a kick in the head when they meet.... I've seen that happen when I was younger. I will not put her in with the goats... I've seen that happen to someone else. My vet has seen her and treated her and he is a great vet. I have a draft farrier. I RAN A FEW HUNDRED DOLLARS SHORT BECAUSE I BELIEVED SOME EXPERT THAT I SHOULDN'T HAVE. Passion was pulled out of Florence on the 16th. She would not even be out of Qt yet had she been at Debs. Not a single horse that was bailed in that bunch is with their adopters. Those people have had the time to prepare themselves to take in another horse. I lost that time when she shipped and again when an "expert" broke a promise. AND THE NAY_SAYERS CAN KISS MY @$$. This horse has been neglected. Old and sick horses don't deserve the truck either. Even if they drop dead on their own an hour after they are pulled from the lot. MTA: Even the gal who used her money that she needed to close her house is asking for help. 10 more horses at Deans. I know Finn just left and that leaves alot of space but aren't there like "alot" of horses showing up there this month? I asked for alittle help...

I talked to Beth. I'm doing what Passion needs. I have a good vet and he did the blood draws. Because I question what everybody says I will check his word against the values that Beth gave me. Again, Gloria has been involved in rescue for over 8 years and she is great. Allen was the danger zone and she is out of there. She is getting vet care and farrier care. What am I not listening to? I have even had to explain several times about where Passion was taken from... somehow what I am saying is not coming through. PEC is a ferry ride and farther away than where she is now. I spoke to Dean before I took her from HH. I think Passion is in a good place with Gloria. I felt bullied at HH and rightly so. And Passion was in that place for a shorter time than she was posted on the cber site! I got her out.... again. I will look out for her and question everything from now on. Don't worry about the financials, my mom lent the money. Thanks.
