I like this photo host- which is it? Is there any reason CBER would prefer us to use Photobucket? (If this seems a dumb question, it's because I'm over 50).

I like it too. Especially because it doesn't take as long to load the thread with little pictures, and then you can click on the ones you want to see bigger. I have dial-up so it's always nice when something is quicker.
The website for it is
www.imagevenue.comI don't think there's any reason you should use Photobucket over any other site, it's just the most commonly used.

Annika isn't totally sound. She does great out in the pasture running around, but once she's on gravel she's really uncomfortable. The farrier thought she may have ringbone, the joint just at the top of her hoof is mostly fused on her fronts. She also had a lot of sole bruising that may have been part of the problem. It's been a long time since I've asked her to walk on gravel so I don't know if it's still as big a problem.
I haven't actually tried to get on her at all. I think I'm too heavy. But when I just acted like I was going to get on she was upset. But I think with careful mounting from a mounting block or being boosted up she'd probably be fine, since it wouldn't hurt her back. I'm not sure if it was that or the saddle that made the difference, but she didn't have a problem when someone was boosted up on her back at the feedlot.
I think she'd do great as a horse for a small kid to groom and be led around on. She is wonderful around my 3 year old. He loves her a lot. And she may be able to do more than that but she'd probably need a vet and trainer evaluation.
She will be a wonderful addition to someone's family. She's a real sweetie and she wants to bond with someone.

Its not really an unsoundness for a horse to be uncomfortable on gravel barefoot, especially if there are sole bruises, usually time and proper shoeing can take care of that . LOTS of normal horses cannot walk barefoot on gravel. Her poor feet were so long and uncared for at the lot that it is not unusual for there to be some of this occuring after feet are trimmed and also her plane of nutrition was a part of it too, now she has been gaining weight and healing so this should be better unless there is something else going on there. She was not lame at the lot even with long feet. Thin, yes, uncared for, yes, wormy, yes, but not lame. She is much better now all the way around.

That is really weird that she wasn't lame at the lot. I wonder what changed.
When I get some free time I'll take her out on the gravel again and see how she responds. I'm out of town this weekend so it won't be right away. Hopefully there will have been some improvement.
I don't know if it's just the soreness on gravel that's a problem. That would be awesome if that was all it was. It may also be ringbone. I wish I had easyboots to try out on her. I don't shoe any of my horses, but maybe it would be something for her adoptor to think about if they don't mind shoes.

Wow! Annika looks great! It look like you are doing a wonderful job with her Andrea!
As far as the soundness/unsoundess issues between pasture/gravel - if she is sound on pasture - then she is sound. It sounds like she may just be tenderfooted on the gravel. Her soles are probably tender from having negleted feet. It would probably be best to try and keep her off of gravel. Also, there are different products on the market specifically made to "toughen up" the soles. Maybe you could check with your farrier to discuss them further. I know a few people who have used them with success.
Anyway - keep up the great work! And thanks for taking this gal in!

My gelding is very tender footed. He looks just like a person walking barefoot on gravel. He's fine on pasture or even pavement. It's just stones that bother him. This is not a soundness issue. He wears shoes on the front during the spring, summer and fall, the time I'm likely to ride him and he's out of his pasture. I don't think this is uncommon. I have read about natural hoof trimming and used it on my pony that foundered with great results, but it did not work on my gelding. I let him go a full year without shoes and he never toughened up. So I went back to shoes on the front. It's really no big deal.
Sole bruises would make any horse sore and can even cause abcesses. The fact that she has sole bruises indicates that her hoof may be more flat and less convex than ideal. That would mean that she walks on her soles and can't help being tender on anything that would poke into the sole as she steps on it. Shoes would take care of this because they lift the sole up off the ground.

Okay . . . Annika is SUCH a sweetie and one of my favorites! I went to Andrea's in January and did a massage on her (Annika, not Andrea) ;-) and this horse is very nice! She did have a very sore middle gluteal muscle which responded very well to some deep tissue work.
So, here's my offer . . . if somebody within 50 miles (or so) of where I live adopts Annika, I will travel to your home and give her two FREE massages!!! I won't even charge mileage!!!!! So, come on all you senior horse lovers - let's find this girl a home!!

She was on biotin for a while, just a small dose in the supplement I was using.
www.horseguard.com I was giving her Horse Guard Mega Dose. Now they're all just getting loose minerals which I'm sure doesn't have biotin. She could probably benefit from more biotin. I hear a packet of gelatin a day also helps, and it seemed to help with one of my other rescues, but my vet was skeptical.

In regards to Annika's lameness/soundness. I don't agree that if she's sound in the pasture it means she's totally sound. In the pasture she's not working, she's not carrying a load. The term "pasture sound" does not mean rideable by any means. It usually means the opposite. Now, don't take that to mean the term applies to Annika, I'm just using it as an example.
I am not saying that she could not carry a rider. She probably could, on soft ground. You'd have to do trial and error and see what she could handle. I really don't know. She needs to be evaluated by a vet. She also needs more time with a good trim to get her feet in the right shape. Maybe shoes would help. I personally don't like them, I would try boots. I wish I had some in her size.
Modified to add: I wish that at her age she could find a home that would be happy with her even if she isn't sound. I don't want her sent out to pasture and ignored, but if she's not able then she should be allowed to retire.
I'm hoping to get a good chunk of time with her this week, to get her out on the gravel again, maybe even try riding her on soft ground. We'll see how it goes... I'll keep you all posted!

It looks like Annika may have a new home to go to! It's not totally final yet, but looking really good. Keep your fingers crossed that it all works out!
I may be looking for assistance with hauling soon, or maybe just a layover point where we can have her switch trailers on her way to Oregon. I don't know exactly where yet.
I'm going to miss her a lot, but this is a good thing.

Yep, it's an adoption!
I think it's final and they just have to figure out shipping. Sounds like she'll be here for another couple weeks at least. So I'll get to enjoy her company for a little while longer.

ME, I have been planing to adopt her for some time if no one else did. No one seems to want her, so "The buck stops here" if you get my meaning.
Now I think it would be very good of all us to adopted just one of the "oldies but goodies".

Jim just left with Annika. She’s such a good girl. I’m going to miss her a lot, it’s so hard to say goodbye. The other horses are upset too. And I felt bad taking Annika from her friends. But Jim has 2 horses just like her best buddies, so hopefully they’ll be good friends too while Annika is there. Annika loaded up just fine and figured out how to get into the hay bag, and looked pretty fine with the whole thing. Oh, and more good news, she walked just fine on the gravel! Her feet were packed with mud, which probably helped, but I think she’s getting better!
So off she goes on the next part of her life journey. It's good go know she'll be with good people. Amy, give her a hug for me when you see her!

OK, so it took Annika about 3 days for her to perk up and start trotting around the pasture after she got to the ranch. She needed a trim right away, so her feet were done 2 days ago. She went to the vet to day to get her teeth done, a prag test, so I won't have any nightmares. And I left it up to vet if we needed to get a lameness test done today so she will ready for X-rays next month. She is eating good and is as we all know is a very nice lady horse. I'm waiting for hytyme to call me and let me know how it all went.

OK folks here we go.
1. Annika weighed in at 1018 which is about what it should be. Big thank's go to Andrea for putting that weight on Annika.
2. And the vet guessed she is 22 years old.
3. Floated her teeth, and they were not bad.
4. Annika is not pregnant. When he did the palpation he noticed her uterus was large, so he did an ultrasound. Also, she has had some foals. Her udders are loose and her vulva is loose. She's fine, just a big horse.
5. She has ringbone, worse on the left front than the right, but it seems she limps on the right. The vet said the left side may have fused at the joint which makes it sound again, and the right foot may do the same. The vet said x rays would indicate the degree of ringbone, and if the joint had fused, but didn't recomend it at this time.
So they you go, not to bad I'd say.
Special that's go to hytyme for taking Annika down to the vet for me

It would be a nice perk, but I don't really don't care. I just want Annie to be happy and healthy for the rest of her days.
Right now I'm trying to track down if she was ever registered or not.
But it doesen't matter, I love her anyway.

Amy, I would LOVE to see those pictures, but keep getting a "Page Cannot Be Displayed" message - can you post them here? Am I the only one having a hard time seeing the pictures?
Thanks!!! And her vet visit sounds like it went very well . . . other than the ringbone, but when it fuses, she'll feel much better.

great job everyone on Annika.
Amy a big thanks to you for giving her a permanent home whereever she lays her head for the rest of her life and for all your support to the many horses you've helped. To Jim and Sherry for always being their for so many of these horses! Andrea, you gave her a home and Amy and others who helped her feed bills. Bless you all.
I'm so relieved she went to the vet, and good results to boot!
