Well Zesty made it home safe and sound to shellyr, shellyr tells me that she is a really beautiful young mare! However they had quite an ordeal with her at the feedlot. Ryan & Heidi were there to help load. One of them mentioned that Zesty went through quite a traumatic time on shipping day. Not sure of all the details, but all of the pasture mates that she came in with shipped.
So they were trying to get her in the alley to load her, and she kept freaking out, and running in any direction she could find. They thought they had all of her escapes blocked, but there was a huge mountain of manure where the feedlot owner has been pushing it all up to try to scoop it out with the tractor. Zesty decided to try to go over the manure pile, rather than into the loading alley. When she got on top, and it was really boggy, and she promptly sunk! Clear to her belly.
The 3 of them worked on her for quite awhile, but could not get her free. shellyrs friend tried to rig a sling that they could all pull on and try to get her out, and the minute he started trying to work with her, Zesty struggled and eventually freed herself.
Anyway Zesty made it home and she seemed much calmer when she got off the trailer at shellyrs house. But she is probably completely exhausted, but she was eating from her hay pile the last time shellyr check in on her, so that's a good sign.
Agine I want to thank all of you of pulling together for Zesty, and a special thank's to shellyr for picking up and opening your home to Zesty and me.

oh, how sad... why do humans put animals in positions like this? Thank you, zora, for helping Zesty and thank you, shelly, for being able to give Zesty a safe haven. If I can help in some way, let me know...Leanne

Wow! What an ordeal for her and everyone who was trying to help her! It must have been an awful thing to witness . . . I saw the manure mountain while we were there to pick up Major and Lola, and it's nasty! I am so glad she's safe and with a lot of love and time, I'm sure she'll figure out she's in good hands! Congrats Zora!!!!

Amy, Major hasn't shown one single sign of strangles, lice, or sickness in any way. Neither did Carhart and he was on the lot with all the other horses who came down with strangles! Carhart is 8-10 years old, Major is 8-10 years old, and Zesty is 9-10 . . . so, I'm thinking that's the magic age for horses to have more of an immunity to those kinds of things!! I've checked Major's temp - poor guy - and it has been fine. He eats "like a horse" and is gaining weight slowly. He's got a twinkle in his eye and loves to run and **try** to buck!!! So, I'm hopeful for Ms. Zesty that she will escape unscathed!!! Congrats again on this lovely girl!!

So I'm told Z is still jumping at any little noise. But took some grain with the Vitamin C in it today, last time Z wouldn't even go near it. This time she waited until shellry stepped out of the round pen and ate it while shellyr was still there. So thats is an improvement for her. It's the first time Z has eaten anything when she can still see a person.

Breakthrough with Zesty yesterday and today.
Shellyr set a pan of grain down and backed away, and Zesty approached it and ate some grain with Shellyr there INSIDE the round pen with her she was only about 10 feet away. Shellyr scratched her head and Zesty jumped backwards, but then she approached the pan again and ate some more. YAY for Zesty!
Shellyr thinks she might be a Hackney pony. She looks very refined and Arab looking. Shellyr tried a little round pen work with her yesterday and she has some really cute knee action going on.

great news that she allowed the touch. Even tho she jumped, that's the natural fight or flight. Flight is better then fight, with humans! She is so cute. Shellyr, you are so kind to help so many.
Hey Amy, Buster is probably so mellow, you will be able to pony her off him on the trails.

We could halter this mare in a small pen at the feedlot, she responded to soft talking and a little grain, scratching neck, slipping lead rope over base of neck and sliding up and then haltering her, she did fine and then could be led, etc. She is not wild, just a little scared. Once you got your hands on her and talked to her and patted her in strokes she settled right down .

She is getting a little braver about approaching for the grain. Zesty still does not want to be haltered though. Zesty is shedding all over right now, nothing that a good brushing won't cure.
Still no snotty nose.

So this is the latest from shellyr.
I worked her in the round pen a little this evening, and I feel like I made a teensy bit of progress with her. She has a very difficult time looking at me with her right eye. Her usual habit is to turn herself sideways, so she can look at me with her left eye. This is common, since most of the time we halter and do everything from the left side. When I had her circle to the right, where she had to look at me from her right eye, she would go about one lap around the round pen, and then spin on her hindquarters away from me, and turn to look at me out of her left eye. I kept asking her to continue to the right, and she gave me a couple of laps. There was a time when she started to spin away from me, and caught herself and turned back towards me. I decided that was a good place to stop. Zesty was much more calmer and she was very intrigued by the games we played tonight.

Sable will only go to her right for a few strides without stopping and turning the other way. Every horse I have started always had their favorite side to work from. I always thought it was like being left or right handed. They are more comfortable, flexible and developed on one side from a young age until we make them use both sides. I was taught to always work from both but start brushing, feet, mounting, etc... from the side they don't like first.
Can't say if there's any real truth to this but it worked for me. I still find myself starting from the left by nature and have to remind myself to change spots.

Quick update on Zesty (Expect a more detailed/informed response from Zora soon):
We were at Jim's the night she arrived, so we got to see her her at her 'worste' if you follow me
Anyway, she came off the trailer with little issues and didn't fight Zora too much when led to her stall. She was of course a bit spooked and probably tired from the trip but she handled it well.
First thing we did that night was get in her stall with her and try to handle her. I didn't expect much but I think she did very well; She let us both handle her and even let us give her hugs. As was pointed out earlier, she is less confident/comfortable from the right side but she did let us approach her from that side too.
The next day we took both her and Buster into the round pen and she did pretty well. She took the halter with no problems and was very curious to watch Zora work with Buster. This is great since our primary goal was for her to see us working with him and maybe relax a bit.
Another thing that really stood out is how aware (and concerned) she was of her physical relationship with other animals: On a couple of occassions when she backed away from us she almost stepped on either my foot or Zora's and was very quick to lift it. Also, we brought Sinbad the border collie in with us and; She seemed as aware of his location as she was of ours and was careful not to step in that area...On a side note there was a moment where they were nose to nose giving eachother a thurough sniffing
She still has allot of work ahead of her but I think she's really trying. It seems she may have had some bad experiences with men in the past so I thought it was very promising that she was as accepting of me as she was (still shy, but not aggressive or overly spooky).
Anyway, that's all for now.

Hey all, well I have to say I really appreciate all 3 horses. Honestley I think Zesty
is really cool! I had no trouble reaching her mind, and she trys so hard to understand.
Also Zesty is veary communicative, and is tuned in most to her sense of sight and
sound. When Zesty has a little melt down, I found that she recovers very quickly
and steadies her self quite well and tunes in to my voice. I had no trouble putting
a halter on her, what I found most intersting is that she opens her mouth as if to
accept a bit and did the same thing every time I took off her halter. She let me
hug her to many times to rember, and she let me kiss her face many times in that
way where we cover one of there eyes with our face. I had no trouble catching her
in the round pen when Zesty had no halter on, when the halter and lead line was in
my hand. She leads very nicely with me, once she steped down on my foot but as soon
as her hoof made contact with my foot she immediately stoped puting her weight down
and put her hoof down 4 or 5 inches away from my foot with out having a melt down.
She was fine with me eating my breakfast in her paddock and contuned to eat and drink
herself. Right now she really does not want her butt, all 4 feet below her knees
and the under side of her belly messed with, but we'll get there soon enough. All
in all I am very pleased with Zesty, I really do like her and look forward to working
with her. I have the utmost faith in Zesty and I belive she will turn out to be a
fantastic little horse in no time at all.

So it's 4/13 thursday night somewhere between 10 and 11:PM, the trailer arives. I talked to Zesty from out side the trailer for a little bit before we unloded her. I went in and led her out, she spun a little bit when she got out, but nothing major. I took her to the barn, we had to pass by a very frisky gelding, Zesty took it in stride. I put her in the big stall, I went in immediately to start handling her. Zesty was shaking all over but she stop shaking after about 15 minutes, but she aloud me to handle her, I took off and put on her halter a few times, she did realy well. Ryan went in to work with her, agine she did realy well. Here and there she would try to move away, but she way very polite about it, and when I asked her to stay with me she did try to over come her fear. By the end of the night she let us both hug her and give her small kisses, I was very happy with her. We diden't get to bed untill about 1:30 AM

Friday 4/14 I went out to the barn to say good morning to Zesty. I took out my harp and tuned and played it a bit, it diden't bother her at all. I went into her stall, halterd and unhaletrd her, I huged and kissed her and petted her in as many places she would let me, she has a ticklish spot right by her withers. I left for the pasture and came back with Annie, Annie went into the stall next to Zesty. I lead Zesty around off and on that day, she leads nicely and was pretty calm. At one point Zesty and me were walking together and we went out to close the mane gate, we had to go past all the barking dogs, there was no problem with Zesty what so ever. By this time Sinbad the dog had taken to walking right under her heals, she knew he was there but agine it was no problem for her. So we just hung out for most of the day. I tryed to pick up her feet, no go on that one. What I discovered about her is if she thinks that we can't fit thought a gate or if she does not like the look of something, she'll just stop and look at me. Once I figuered out what she was saying and I made an effort to compensate, she would fallow right along. I like this about her, I can be impantient and to have a horse that slows me down and asks me to look at the world from time to time is a good thing. Also when Zesty asks, she is not bluffling.
So that night Annie and Buster bunked next to Zesty.
