Aphrodite is doing well she has been medicated due to absess from getting shots. Yestarday I rode her around the yard in a walk she just is a little clueless about what to do (needs more work on ground) Then... I got off and started to mount again as I did I grabbed her mane. SHE WENT BANNANA'S. Thank goodness I stepped off she bucked all over the yard this lasted probably 4 minutes although it seemed like it was forever (glad I have an enterance gate to my property that was shut) when she finally stopped (broken riens and all) I worked with her some more on pressure and tried to identify what triggered the problem I think it was when I grabbed her mane for support. Anyway after several tries I was able to partially remount before letting her relax before turnout. If I was a bucking stock owner I'd bet on her to be a great bucking horse. Man she was snorting and head to the ground and using all her body. Wish me luck with future training.

Hmmm, that screams "chiropractic issue" to me...that is very weird for them to react so violently to a pull on the mane (which as you know has no nerve endings and shouldn't hurt). Can you get her adjusted before you try riding her again?

Remember also we do not know if or how much training she had for riding, so would be better to start from scratch and go from there, I would also check out any pain issues, etc as above poster said, or it may well have been she was expecting to be done and was startled by your actions. I had a super nice gentle gelding one time that was doing awesome in training, rode gentle, was lazy though and one day as addition to leg as he wasn't responding I popped him in the butt with my reins and he was half asleep and was startled and took off bucking like no one had ever seen, luckily I was able to stay on and then thanks to my "one rein stop" training with him ingrained, bring his head up and back to my hip and once settled, move on, and he never bucked again in his life! I did have black and blue places from the saddle horn, but at least stayed on and was glad for prior training ingraining that signal!

Hi all heres an update: Aphrodite we decided we liked that name (since she is such a goddess) will be going to training soon I have been working with her but don't want to chance getting bucked off and not being able to work so she will go to training for 2 weeks to resolve this hopefully. I can't believe how expensive training is I've always done my own (never had a real problem bucking horse) so I was floored when I was looking around for prices.
Aphrodite has struggled with the cough and the vet says to just ride it out since she has been on antibiotics for 3 courses she believes that it is just a virus not bacterial. It has improved so I hope we are on the up swing. Has anyone else had ongoing issues with the lot horses in this area?

Hi everyone I rode Aphrodite last night I just couldn't wait for her to go to the trainer, I get so impatient. Anyway she was a little skittish but after lunging and doing some work off the ground she let me mount. We did well through the walk and trot then got to the canter and she bucked well needless to say I went off. But I bounced, and laughed. Stupid did not have a good seat so back on I went at first she tried to buck again but I got her moving so did some more walking trotting and did a little canter this time I was ready (no buck) anyway there you go I rode her. And no real damage I will keep the work up and see how things go. Penny

Well rode Aphrodite again at a walk and trot for about 1.5 hours as daylight allowed after work. She did well still pretty touchy. I swear she must have been a Bucking horse she tightens up every time I have my hands close to her whithers and she has some very touchy spots around her girth in-fact when I rode her down a hill in the pasture her girth moved a little forward and she stopped dead and hunched up. This is a felt girth so it should not be a problem with pinch. Whenever I took her down hill she had the same response. Anyway overall she's doing well for a beginner at this process. Penny

Hi penny, thanks for the updates on this gorgeous girl. Did you ever have a Chiropractor or Massage Therapist come out to work on Aphrodite? I would try working her more on the ground - in the round pen, with surcingle - and not even try under saddle until her pain issues are largely resolved. Just don't want you to get hurt!
I know how hard it is to be patient when we want to start making progress, but it's possible you're trying too much, too soon.

Thanks I have a horse massage person right next door. I do work on touching and massage with her as I don't want a bad end to this either ( me or her getting hurt). When I said shes touchy what I mean is that I don't even need to touch her withers while in saddle just move my hands around above them and she thinks something bad is coming. Thats why is said maybe bucking horse you know how they step on the wither to tighten the rope prior to letting out of chute. We are moving pretty slow I have been working on the ground with her since I got her and just go out and rub all over her she likes it. And she actually doesn't even mind the saddle going on and getting tightened. I have also been working with her on the surgail(sp?) and she changes directions well (no lounge whip though she definitely has a fear of those) I have been trying to get her used to sticks and whips but she is verrrrry fearful so its a slow process. She must have had a pretty bad experience. Thanks for your concern and input.

Aphrodite is doing great She is feeling better. I have decided that she will not go back to training at this time due to expenses of vet bill and trying to re-cooperate financially. However I rode her in the round pen this last weekend and she did well in the walk and trot so, I may be able to work the kinks out my self hopefully. She is such a beautiful girl I would post pics but my camera broke and have not taken any for a while. So as soon as its fixed I'll be getting some loaded. Penny
