JET - Older - 14.3h - Sorrel QH Mare
Post by foxie on Apr 12, 2006, 3:29am
JET - Aged sorrel QH type mare, 14.3 hands. This is a very sweet mare, has sway back and is heavy bellied, which is why her price is more. She is gentle and was ridden before. She appears to be a candidate for some Cushings treatment as she shows some of the symptoms of the disease:(Long shaggy coat, loss of muscle mass especially on the topline and rump)but because we are not around her all the time we do not know if she shows some of the other signs. Equine Cushings is caused by a tumor in the pituitary gland. Another equine rescue had discovered a great help for this disease with an herbal product called "Chasteberry" or the Vitex plant. I have used it successfully in other horses of her type. I will provide some of this product and lots of great information on how to help this mare have a good life to her adopter. For Adoption Only.

Even the FO likes this horse and does not want to can her, but will if she isn't adopted this time, he said she is a really good horse and well broke and kind and this is a true "rescue" in his words. I hope someone can give her a chance, you would be amazed at how well they can turn around with the right treatment.

I met this horse last Saturday at the feedlot. She is very sweet, and wanted to come up and get some of my grain, but was a little leery of getting in the other horses way. I took the grain over to her and she seemed very grateful. She seemed like a very polite old gal, and I think she would make a great candidate for a kids horse.
Revised to add: I had to laugh when I saw she had been named Jet. That would be like naming one of these 17 hand TB's "Tiny".

OK, the group who bailed and adopted Jet needs to step in here folks! We got her off the lot because she was supposed to go to PNP4kidz, now Ryan needs some help as she cannot keep Jet, it was supposd to be only temporary till she went south to CA. We local volunteers are full to the max and spend a lot of money out of our own pockets on these horses, and cannot afford more, so please please follow thru on this mare. She is more than worth it, gentle, trained, and would be a good horse for little ones.

Jet is so fun to have around! She keeps Emmy IN LINE, accepting no foolishness whatsoever from a two year old.
She is very quiet and doesn't ask for anything. When I go to pet on her awhile it seems like she is so appreciative. She will just stand, relaxed and take what you give her. When I walk away, she doesn't ever ask for more (like Archer and Emmy who you can't get off your heels!). She accepts what is given, but doesn't expect anymore.
What a wonderful girl. Pretty is as pretty does....

Jet is settling in here in CA, had her feet done, had her hair clipped some more... and she is on our 'diet' which is low sugar and starch. so far so good... labs were drawn and should be back later this week, and she started on some pergolide, low dose for now.
she is very sweet, loves to stand outside, even tho she has a nice stall, but she does go in to pee and poo... neat freak I guess!!!
Her feet looked good, long, flared, but no laminitis, yukky frogs, but we'll work on that.
oh, and she has a tatoo! take a peek on the general board for guesses.. but from that, and her teeth, we'd guess she is an 1981 or 82 model... and she raced!!!
hehe, no more racing for this girl... but we'll keep trying to find out 'who' she is!!!
Is there any QH retirement fund, or racing history type thing? any QH enthusiests groups who are benevolent to the retired racers???

Hmmm, I don't know! If you find one, let me know, I may need one for Sunline if she loses the rest of her vision. I need to find a good "eye" vet in L.A. to evaluate her more thoroughly and see what percentage of vision she has left. Preferably one who wants to donate his services to rescue

Just for completeness, and so I can peruse the numbers later...
her ACTH was >1250
glucose 143
insulin 81
Thyroid T3 0.5
T4 1.45
We started her on Sunday night on 1 mg pergolide, then upp'd her to 1.5 mg last night (Thursday). We will discuss the target dose with the vet soon, and settle on that for a month before redrawing her ACTH.
she was started on our low NSC pellets, and we will re-run her insulin/glucose then also, to hope it comes down out of the diabetic range....
and, perhaps start some formal exercise soon too, to work off that sugar.... as she is sound... that will help immensely.
She will hopefully meet her paddock mate and get into a shared paddock soon, but need to re-think who... since she will need to be on pellets... see our site later today for the teeth pics.. owie! bad teeth!!! as well as the fact that she is very sound, and will want to run and play WAY more than blind Snap pony can handle...
she seems to be bonding with a neighboring gelding, Sonny, a starvation rescue from 2 years ago, all beefed up but still has 'issues'... maybe with him. anyway... we will see as time goes on.

Just a quick update for every one on Jet. She seems to be doing great.... she is nearly all shed out now except for that belly And I just realized that no other pictures have been posted, so here are a couple to show how she's doing.
Ah.... now THIS is what she's been waiting for!
It appears to us that she's had quite a bit of training; I think racing a sulky, Beth thinks dressage. Either way, a REALLY pretty extended trot on this lady. (but the big question... does that belly look pregnant???)
And just because he's everywhere, Sundance (Hobbs) watching from his paddock that overlooks the arena. He can't WAIT to get down there!!

I don't remember if she rolled totally over or not... I think she did!
We were as surprised as anyone that she could get up and move like she did. And, while I'm not dressage expert by ANY means (having watched about 2 shows!) she does seem to know to do perfect diaganol arena crosses and trots perfectly along the rail with no coaxing at all. I can't wait to see her in 6 months and see how good she feels!

And look at the shedding out! I'm so impressed. I had friends who had a horse years ago that wouldn't shed out, long before we all knew about Cushing's. It's so great to see that these horses can be helped now.

Look at that TROT! WOW!
And look at the shedding out! I'm so impressed. I had friends who had a horse years ago that wouldn't shed out, long before we all knew about Cushing's. It's so great to see that these horses can be helped now.
