Pierce was a perfect gentleman all the way through grooming and saddling. I think he was a barrel racer though. He was good while I started to mount but he turned his head to watch my right leg. The second it crossed his back he was off (well he thought he was ) This picture is about as calm as he got while he was being ridden. He's VERY well broke though and tries very hard. So I'll get some good long trail rides on him and I'm sure he'll be just fine.
They lady in the pic is a friend of mine who used to reschool Thoroughbreds so she walked him out long enough for me to get pics.

Thanks Mandy, I just noticed his head up and wondered about the bit thing, or also at least with a snaffle you could do a lot of bending and flexing and disengaging the hindquarters to get his head/neck more relaxed and focussing on his rider. I am sure long rides will be helpful as he realizes he doesn't have to take off under saddle!

Thanks Heidi. I did ride him in a rope halter bareback in the arena. He's good untill you put the saddle on. I tried the rope halter and a bosal. It's the saddle as far as I can tell. I was disengaging his hind quarters while I was on him. He does ok, but he does really fast spins like hes in the box when he does it. Actually I kept him bent after I caught him watching my leg that why I didn't end up in the dust. I've had enough barrel friends to know that look. He's a great horse with a ton of potential.

He might have been over-gamed and got his brain fried, hence his being dumped. Once he realizes you're not going to do that with him, I'm sure he'll relax. He just looks like "uh-oh, what's going to happen next?" right now.

It looks like I haven't updated Pierce's thread in a while..........
I had his teeth floated a month or so ago, and the vets first comment was 'he has had his tongue almost completed severed'. Ouch! There is a large scar across his tongue, and on the inside corners of his mouth. It appears that this was done with a bit (twisted wire?), but it is old and healed and his tongue is functional. We won't ask him to carry a bit - we will use a bosal, sidepull, hackamore, whatever he prefers. He has put on weight and is a VERY pretty boy. Hope to saddle/ride him this weekend. Don't know if *I* will be the one that gets on him, but I know a young gal that isn't afraid to get tossed, so Hilary will probably be the one that gets on first! Pierce is a very sweet boy, not spooky, loves people, and if he is a good trail horse, he will probably stay with Tonisha (Hystyle on the BB) permanently.
Pierce stood for the vet, the farrier, loves the electric clippers!, he is quite the clown!
I will try to get some pics of him to post soon.

Pierce Update:
I had a brave young gal ride Pierce yesterday........he is definitely a gaming horse. Very Alert, head high (we used a sidepull, no bit due to his injured tongue), walked but really wanted to go faster, jogged and loped when asked. He did quite a bit of rooting on the sidepull, and flipping his head so the reins almost went over his head.......nothing terrible, he was just a little anxious. Next time we are going to take him out on the trail and see if he settles. Sometimes it's the arena that makes them nervous - just because they have always been asked to 'perform' in the arena.
Pierce will probably be re-homed if he can't settle in to being a good trail horse.......so if anyone is interested, please contact me.

I will update Pierce's thread, and hopefully Alli will keep it going..........
I bailed Pierce in April, with the intention of finding out what he knows, what he might need medically or chiropractically, and then find him his forever home. If he had been a dead broke trail horse, he would have stayed with me, but he isn't.
What Pierce is: Sweet, well trained, people loving, calm, level headed, active, sweet gelding. He appears to have been used for roping or gaming, so I wanted to find a home that would be appropriate for him, with the understanding that he comes back to me if they can't keep him. Well, every horse deserves their own special girl to take care of them, and Pierce found his........On Saturday, I met Alli in Biggs, OR, and she took Pierce home to her 15 year old daughter. From what I understand, he is fitting in wonderfully, and Gabrielle is very happy with him. He IS really well trained, knows his stuff in the round pen, and follows his new friend around like he has known her forever. I hadn't found anything that spooked or scared Pierce, and that was true even when we unloaded him in the middle of a very busy truck stop in Biggs - he acted like he had seen a million truck stops. What a guy this is..........I look forward to hearing all about Pierce and Gabrielle............Rodeo Court?
Thanks Alli, for giving Pierce a chance to show what a great horse he truly is, and for giving him is own teenager to take care of........
This is why I have adopted several horses - to 'fix' them if they need it (medical, teeth, chiro, farrier) access their training (I hire a gal to do this!) and then find them a great home - always with the written understanding that they will come back to me if they can't keep them for any reason. It feels kinda good to know that these horses are getting a second chance......I know I can't keep them all, that would limit how many I could help.

Pierce is wonderful just like everybody says. My daughter
Gabrielle bonded with him quickly. They both have easy going
personalitys.
We are so grateful to Wendy and everybody who took care of him. Hard to believe that he came from the feedlot.
My daughter is on rodeo court this year . Pierce won't a problem being in parades. He doesn't spook EVER.

Alli, I'm so happy to hear Pierce is doing so well and that your daughter is enjoying him. I had gotten pretty attached to this boy, as it wasn't hard to do with his friendly personality, and it was hard to see him go. The greatest part is saving the horses...the bad part is when Wendy brings them to my house and I fall in love with them. <G> I think of him often and am happy to hear he is fitting in so well. I'd love to see some pictures of him and your daughter! Tell her to give him a hug for me!

I think Pierce and Gabrielle were meant to be together - it just took going to a feedlot, then to CCG's, then to Hystyles, then for it Not to work out to get another horse on here, THEN it was time for Pierce to go to Gabrielle...........that only took about 6 months!!!! He really is a special horse....I think he will do fine with Parades - I never saw him spook at anything. It's like he has done it all already.
Keep the updates coming Alli!!!!!

Tonisha, you are so kind. I can see why you got attached to him. Pierce is a very, very nice horse.
Gabrielle and Pierce went to a 4-H clinic on Saturday.
Pierce knows his stuff and now Gabi can step it up a bit
with her horsemanship skills. We don't know all that
Pierce knows, but I can tell you he has some very
good western training. He spins and does roll-backs
with ease. Gabi learned how to do a proper roll-back.
She was so excited.
She is also learning how to make Pierce softer.
He is responding to her so well. His stops and back
are quicker and softer. Way before Wendy got him
from the feedlot he most likely had an owner that
wasn't to kind with him. He was very nervous because
he didn't know what the rider was going to do.
Now he is relaxed since he knows what to expect
from Gabrielle.
Many thought that Pierce was a barrel horse, but
didn't have the chance to do the barrel pattern.
I can tell you that he is trained for barrels.
Gabi loped the pattern one time and he proved
to be an automatic barrel horse. Gabi said that
she got to the barrel and was ready to turn him , but
he turned around the barrel so fast by himself , she wasn't
ready for it. Too cute !

of Oregon first . I was raised to believe as Wendy does.

Too cute !

Yep, that pretty much sums it up. Guess he wanted a tour
of Oregon first . I was raised to believe as Wendy does.
Things sometimes do happen for a reason. Just need to
find what it is.

Sounds like Gabrielle and Pierce are on their way to being a great team! I am so happy for both of them. It's exciting to know that Pierce now has a great partner whom he can trust. I bet these two are going to turn heads!
Would love to have some pictures! hint hint
