ZOE - She is sorrel with white markings (two white front socks). Around 15 hands high. Very thin, and just had a foal weaned from her and an aborted foal from utero a week ago. She is really sweet and likes people. Is gentle and needs someone to love her.

Zoe is here! Thank you Lori W, LindaL, Tockita & Jeniferb!
She unloaded with just a tiny bit of hesitation, but not bad at all! I turned her out alone in the big paddock while Owen is locked in the small corral (he's not real pleased being confined ).
She doesn't appear to have much interest in him at the moment. She's walking around checking things out...taking a lick of the salt block & the Sweetlix block, drinking some water, eating a few bites of hay and taking a few nibbles of the warm mash I gave her.
Like LindaL mentioned she's pretty wary of humans, but she tolerated me brushing her neck a little bit and I gently rubbed her face some too. She didn't run from me at all. This mare is NOT mean or wild! Just standoffish & startled if a fast movement is made near her face from what appears to be rough handling. Her mane is in knots & her feet need to be done badly. She could use some weight & she also looks wormy. Her udders are definitely bothering her & very swollen. I will have my vet out ASAP as I think her udders need immediate attention. She doesn't look very old. I got a pretty good look at her teeth. Maybe 12ish?
Overall I think she is going to fill out, and be a very nice looking mare. She does have a very nice eye & walks out nice too. Her legs are straight and she is put together pretty nice.
Her "after" photos will show a different horse.
I will keep you all updated with photo's and progress as I work with her.
Here are the "before" pictures I took.

and photo's from today.
I had to cut the knots out of her mane so she has a bit of a chop job which I will fix once she trusts me a little more.
She absolutely loves my mustang gelding & vice versa!
And here are a few of her feet. She wont let me pick them up...she jerks away abruptly if I even run my hand down her leg.
And one of her udders from today. They look like they have gotten even larger since last night!

This mare had a foal pulled off her before she was brought to the lot and supposedly had just aborted a foal that would have been born this year. She may still have some hormonal repercussions from that. She was thin and in bad shape when she came to the lot but was a sweet little thing, we were told she had just been a broodmare and had not been ridden or trained , but she was good in the halter at the lot. Given where she came from, I would guess she had some abuse also...

Zoe's new friend is a handsome boy!
Zoe was only here at the Ranch a few days but in that time I found her a nice, but wary horse with really good walk, trot gaits. She haltered easily as long as we moved quietly. She also liked my younger students a lot.
Zoe was quiet to load/unload, was quiet in her paddock. She knows something about roundpen work and my farrier, who did not have time to work with her feet in the two days she was here, thinks she may have been ridden at one time.
In roundpen she joined up and come to the center to stand quietly. She did not want her feet messed with and since I was trying to make her feel comfortable with me, I did not push it.
I think Zoe's new home is just what she needs: room, companionship of another upbeat horse and consistent, steady work.

Zoe had quite the experience when Owen got a hold of the tarp covering the hay & drug it in to their paddock to play with! I kept looking out the window seeing Zoe way down at the end of the paddock far from the hay piles!
I looked out & I see Owen with the tarp making a huge ruckus, pawing it, dragging it and biting it! Zoe would walk back to the hay pile, try to take a bite, get startled and trot away. After a while she realized the tarp wasn't going to eat her & she stayed at the hay pile eating & watching Owen very close while he entertained himself with the tarp.
I snapped this photo from the window.

I'm still looking for something he's afraid of so we can "work" through the scariness. HA, I doubt that will happen anytime soon.

I love it!!! I adopted a BLM mare from CBER a few months ago. She's extremely curious about everything. I don't have any experience with the breed, so am wondering if the curiousity is a mustang trait. I just noticed your signature and am going to check out your drill team website. I'd love to hear any thoughts that you have on mustangs in general...perhaps another thread? A new mustang thread? hint, hint, hint

I spent about an hour working with Zoe this afternoon. When I go outside she nickers to me (I'm sure for food reasons right now) and will even attempt to walk up to me when I enter the paddock. I have to approach her very slowly & carefully or she gets startled/worried and leaves. She's afraid of the lead rope & flinches at just about every movement when I'm trying to snap it on the halter ring, so I have to take that very slow. Once I have the lead rope attached she leads well, just very flinchy at fast movements.
I took her in to the smaller corral and let her have some rope to walk in circles if she needed to. I don't want her to feel trapped right now so if she needs to leave & circle me, that's fine.
On the left side just the touch of my hand on her neck made her worry enough to start circling around me. I took my hand off of her when she circled and let her go around until she chose to stop. Then I gently laid my hand on her neck again. Continued to repeat this circling/stopping/petting for about 10 minutes. She finally stood still for a good minute while I gently rubbed her neck. Then I moved to the right side. She wasn't nearly as afraid, but she still flinched at the slightest touch. I did the same thing on the right side as I did on the left until she stood for a few minutes allowing me to pet her gently. A few times she came up very close smelling my clothing and shoulder.
What's very interesting is when she is not on a lead rope, just free in the corral & has food in front of her, she will allow me to groom her with MUCH less worry. Once the lead rope is attached her eyes widen and she gets terrified of me. She even followed me after I removed the lead rope.
I bent down to look closely at her udders & she got very protective, raised her hind foot up & laid her ears. No doubt she's in pain! I was not able to touch beyond the girth area today. The first & second day she was here I was able to groom her top line from head to tail. I think she was tired from the haul & just wasn't up to putting up much of a fight. Now she is feeling better.
I'm pretty sure the reason she can't eat the hay pellets if due to her teeth being in need of floating. I watched her try to suck on them & have watched her drop her regular grain all over the place. So, until she gets her teeth fixed I'll soak her grain. I shredded apples and carrots & added them to her grain tonight. She gobbled it down so hopefully she'll start enjoying some treats soon!
The vet will be out next Thursday (I couldn't get anything sooner). I'm hoping to schedule the farrier to be here at the same time so while she's sedated we can start working on her feet.

Zoe was a very good girl this afternoon. I was cleaning on the outside of the fence & she came up to visit me. I reached through the fence & scratched her neck & when she walked off I ran my hand down her back to her rear. She didn't seem to mind.
Then I went in the paddock & she walked up to me several times for some short scratches on her neck. I was very pleased that she didn't flinch or take off when I reached out to touch her. She seemed to enjoy the attention & even stood & dozed off right next to me.
Here are pictures of her from today.

Today she made some major improvements! I was able to rub most of her body including both of her front legs without getting a huge reaction out of her. She did so well today I felt it was OK to remove her halter which was starting to rub her hair off. She also followed me around a little bit without the halter & lead rope.
Anyways...here she is today.
I didn't have a photographer so I took my own pics while working with her.
Ears are forward & she is relaxed.
Getting curious about the stick, but still relaxed.
The halter is off!
