THISTLE- 4 yrs old, 15hh, registered QH sorrel mare. She is in very poor shape and all beat up, marks everywhere, she may have gone down in a trailer with loose horses. She does not want anyone to approach her at this point and we can't really blame her. She needs lots of good nutrition, worming, and of course training. She will ship if not adopted, but this horse will only be for experienced people as she has no reason to trust anyone right now.

I will go out on a limb and take Thistle if my approval comes through. How do I go about sending the money? Where I'd keep her is at a friend's house who has a mustang pen set up which would be perfect for her to start learning to trust again. Need some help here to find out if my app has been approved and how I can get the money sent. Thanks.

Hey Hollyz!! Have you e-mailed her contact person, ryan? Her e-mail is ranger@elltel.net - I so hope you get this girl. She needs to get off that lot and learn what TLC is all about. Also, on the main CBER website is a link to Paypal. You could go ahead and send the money - it would be easier for them to save her if her bail is paid!! It also might expedite the processing of your application!
Keep us posted!!

She had a backup plan, but as a full adopter you take priority. Have you heard back from Ryan yet? I would go ahead and send her bail (please add 3% to cover the paypal fees) just in case, that way they know. Could you PM me your full name and I'll chack about your application? I hope this works for you!!!

She should be fine until Sunday. I live in So Cal, so I had to depend on a shipper to pick my horse up for me. He was on the lot for 3 or 4 days after I paid for him and was okay. Granted he was in a LOT better shape than sweet little Thistle. Have you got a new name picked out? MJ

That's great that she can stay at the lot. I thought if she stayed there and the truck came that she'd be taken even if she had been adopted. Do the trucks ever come on the weekend?
I kind of like the name Thistle and may just keep it. Or I'll keep it until she shows me what name she needs. Just waiting on one more reference to be in one place long enough to take the call...

I don't think that adopted horses ship very often. I think that the main problem is if they stay to long. I know that the FO does not like horses to hang around for a long time. I am not an expert on this, but that's what I have gathered from reading the posts for some time. MJ

I got Thistle home last night and settled in to her new digs. It took a little doing to get her halter on, we had to herd her into a small chute area and with the temptation of grain (thanks again Traci!) Heidi and I managed fine. Once she was haltered, she allowed scratches on her neck and shoulders but I don't think she's been taught to lead. With encouragement from behind, we moved her down to the loading area and she hopped right in pretty easily. Getting out was another matter and she pretty much fell out but kept her feet.
I have the vet coming today to give her a thorough going over and outline a nutrition plan to get her weight up. She's really very sweet, a little food aggressive (who can blame her?), and very sick. At least she is eating and seems comfortable in her new home. Can't wait to see her with some weight on and her shiny summer coat.

Holly, I'm so happy you took Thistle! Bless You!! She needed off that lot so badly. I had e-mailed Ryan and told her you were interested, just in case as a newbie you weren't able to figure out the "system" in time to save her! I was sooooo pulling for you to get her and I'm very glad it worked out. This girl deserves so much better than she's had and it sounds like she's well on her way. I hope you can post pictures soon of her in her new home as well as an update on what the vet had to say. She really touched me - her sad little face and beat up body . . . she's going to look great with a little TLC!!

Post vet visit report on little Thistle: Let's see, he took a nasal culture but did say that her lungs sounded clear but respiration was slightly elevated which would be normal for having strangles. Her temp was a hair over 102 so not too much of a fever. Gave her a healthy dose of banamine IV to help with any pain. Neck swellings were close to bursting so need to hot pack twice a day to encourage them along. After they burst, we'll put her on oral antibiotics so she doesn't get to feeling like a pin cushion. Plus she has a skin fungus. He rated her a 2 on the body condition scale. She stood like an angel for all the treatment without showing any inclination to bite or kick.
She was feeling a bit better after the banamine and was eating well. She loves her equine senior feed and alfalfa cubes. Today she gets a 1/2 dose of wormer and a probiotic to help her gut absorb as much nutrition as possible and we'll be adding corn oil to her food as well along with as much orchard grass hay as she can eat.
She's in a 24' x 24' area with a shelter and is isolated because of her condition. I'd love to just sit with her all day so she gets used to me but gotta work to pay the bills. She's going to look great by the end of summer.

I groomed her yesterday and you wouldn't believe the amount of hair that came off. She especially liked being curried on her chest, her lip was waaaaayy out there! Mostly she dozed in the sun while I worked on her and she really seemed to enjoy the attention. She's a little leery about having her head touched but is getting better.
Definitely feeling better too yesterday. Her head was up and she had some light in her eye and was interested in what was going on around her. When I went out, she was laying down taking a nap and didn't get up until I got pretty close. I hear she's been nickering at the other horses she sees so she's on the road to recovery. Can't wait to give her a bath, she needs one! She's a good girl and I'm very attached!

Re: THISTLE - 4 y/o - 15h -Reg. Sorrel QH Mare

We had a little breakthrough yesterday while I was grooming her. Heretofore she has been a little standoffish but yesterday she lowered her head to me and wanted me to hold it in my arms, which I did, and she let out a big sigh. She now loves having her head rubbed and massaged and pretty much lets me touch her all over but is a little nervous about having her legs handled and brushed. We'll get there. Plus she's turned into quite the talker. She nickers whenever someone approaches her pen and talks with the other horses that she can't quite see because of her isolation, but can hear, and neighs loudly if her breakfast is late!
Been concentrating on grooming and clearing up her fungus that's all over. Haven't seen any evidence of lice but may dust her just in case. Her coat still is pretty rough looking and I would love for one warm day to bathe her-it would make a world of difference. The strangles is starting to clear up, her nose was dry yesterday with no sign of green. Sill has the abcesses, one is draining and the other hasn't popped yet. If it hasn't by Wednesday, I'll have the vet out to lance it.
I'm still working on a new name but not having any luck with coming up with something that hasn't been used a million times already. I have no imagination.

I heard Thistle has been adopted. Is this true? If not, I'll send my money to reserve this girl pending approval. I heard it sometimes takes 72 hours.
Thanks for the welcome and the friendly people here.

She had a backup plan, but as a full adopter you take priority. Have you heard back from Ryan yet? I would go ahead and send her bail (please add 3% to cover the paypal fees) just in case, that way they know. Could you PM me your full name and I'll chack about your application? I hope this works for you!!!

I just sent the money for Thistle to Ryan. There weren't any clear instructions if that is the right way to do it, so that's what I did. Hopefully I'll be cleared and can bring the little girl home this weekend.

I'm really excited about her and think she's going to be a dandy once she's all fattened up and feeling fine. If I'm cleared to pick her up, is there someone who can look after her until Sunday? That's the soonest I can get down there as I have commitments Saturday.

Congratulations to you, Holly, and thank you for adopting her.
