Cherri (aka Sassy) arrived in Bend about an hour ago..............boy what a difference a week makes! Anyone who doesn't believe that life on the feedlot is hard on the horses, should see Sassy. Her original pics were taken about a week ago, and since then, she has some big hairless spots - looks like she's been bitten, or run into something - with scabs. Doesn't look like a disease, looks like she's been roughed up, and she's lost weight. Poor girl.....she is the sweetest thing. Walked quietly to her corral, hasn't whinnied, hasn't pinned her ears at the other horses (my PMU mare is next to her - as good as quarantine gets....my pmu mare was exposed to strangles two years ago in her 'herd' so I figured she was the least likely to contract it, and if she does, then we will treat it, but she is a healthy, hardy horse, so I don't expect any problems), and she just quietly wanders around her corral, not too sure what to think. We will have the vet out to preg check her, check teeth, and prescribe chiro if she needs it, but won't be doing any vaccinations until I know she is healthy. Did I mention how sweet she is?
I'm going to try to blanket her tonight - we'll see if she knows what a blanket is!!! As calm as she is, I don't expect any problems.

Well, Sassy (Cherri) has a lump under her jaw, so I am assuming she has strangles. My vet recommends no antibiotics unless she has a temp....so I will try to take her temp tomorrow...wish me luck! She (vet) also said that it is the pus inside that has the bacteria, so not too contagious until it ruptures. If it gets really 'ready' I may have them lance it, so we can contain the bacteria some....we'll see. I've never dealt with strangles before, so this will be a new experience. She is eating well, so we'll see how it goes...........
She stood perfectly still while I put the blanket on, so she's obviously had one on before. I will take some pics tomorrow.....

Okay, I know everyone thinks their horses are the best, but I gotta tell ya'll, I got the best of the best!!!! Cherri (renamed Lotti) is such a Sweetheart! The vet was out today and she does not have strangles, no temp, no running nose, just a small soft lump under her chin which he thinks can be from an injury since she has lost alot of hair under there, and has other areas where she was obviously picked on at the lot! She is NOT pregnant, she does have a slight stiffness in one hock, and if that looks like it will be a problem we will have it xrayed. She is a perfect lady with perfect ground manners. Don't know if she has been ridden yet or not, but we will be figuring that out as soon as the weather improves. I cannot figure out why someone would dump a registered QH mare, in her prime, as sweet as this one, at an auction or feedlot....just doesn't make sense. Kasey (my other CBER mare) also had her teeth done today, and she too was wonderful. The vet was impressed by them - partially because my other horses aren't this well mannered!!! Give me a few weeks, I'll screw these up too!!! Just kidding.....I hope.

Hi Vicki,
Cherri, now known as Lotti (registered name is Ima Lotta Sass - couldn't call her sassy, cause she isn't!) is doing great. She and my PMU mare have bonded and are buddies.
I'm going to try a saddle on her tomorrow - weather permitting. I haven't done alot with her, just letting her chill for a few weeks. I do blanket her, and she is very good about it. She can be a little aprehensive at times - kinda like waiting for the other shoe to drop - but other than that, she is a wonderful horse. We'll find out tomorrow if she knows what a saddle is...........
Thanks for asking about her......she's a keeper!

Just a quick updateon Cherri, now known as Lotti....farrier came today - I have a GREAT farrier. Lotti was hesitant about picking up her right hind, and after working with her for 10 minutes or so, Randy was able to easily trim and rasp that hoof. There was an old Quarter Crack in that hoof, so maybe her apprehension stemmed from the treatment she got with that crack......who knows. She also had a recent abscess blow out on the top of her left front hoof, which could be why she ended up at the lot if she didn't appear sound. She has foundered in the recent past. None of the above appear to be big issues for her, just a matter of watching and making sure she is well fed and well trimmed. My farrier, Randy, really liked her. He is not one to get upset, jerk or yell at a horse. He takes everything at their pace, and if they can't lift the leg up high, he will trim it down low. He is just a great guy, and I sincerely appreciate his consideration of the horse. Lotti was very comfortable with him when he was done (and he gave her a couple of treats, which she really likes now).
Hopefully the quarter crack won't cause her any more problems, but if it does, we will deal with it.

It just keeps getting better and better!!! Lotti (aka Cherri) reminds me so much of our daughters now 22 year old Paint gelding - he is the ultimate, sweet QH, and has tons of eq & pleasure training. We can put just about anyone on him. Lotti leads like she has been shown in many halter classes. I saddled her yesterday, and there was absolutely no reaction to the saddle, pad, or cinching - she has obviously been saddled hundreds of times. She didn't like the bit I first put on her (it is a new Rockin S snaffle, which alot of horses who don't like bits are supposed to like - my gelding loves it!), so I switched to a full cheek snaffle, and she liked that one better. I will have the trainer out this week to ride her and see what she knows - I'm going to guess that she has been shown, and knows alot. May have to use a bosal or hackamore, or I have a Dr. Cook bitless bridle if she looks like she might like that we will try it! All I will do is trail ride her, so I don't really care what kind of bit/bitless bridle she uses - whatever is most comfortable for her.

Just a quick update on Lotti (Cherri). She is such a sweet mare - I just don't know how people can give up such great horses. I have saddled and bridled her in the past few weeks, and decided yesterday to get on her. I just used a bareback pad and halter with reins - easier to make an emergency dismount - and had to use an upside down metal trough to get on her - she's a tall girl! The noisy trough didn't bother her, the bareback pad was a non issue, no problem cinching - nothing bothered her. She stood like a statue next to the trough and let me lay over her, flail my arms around, semi throw my leg over, no response. So I hopped on....she was absolutely fine. That doesn't surprise me, but you just never know. I only rode her for 5 minutes or so, and she did okay. Obviously has been jerked on, was *very* protective of her mouth - even though she didn't have a bit in, she held her head up high like she was braced for whatever was coming next..........I'm not a jerk and pull kinda gal, so we just did soft circles, stops, backing - she's knows all of that. I wanted that first ride to be positive for her, so I wasn't on her very long. We'll do more this weekend. I may try a hackamore or bosal on her (although I have never used a bosal, so we'll see......) we are in no hurry, we'll just take it as it comes. She is really starting to trust me - it has taken about 6-8 weeks, but she is getting there. And she is such a sweet mare..............

Another Lotti Update...
I rode her last weekend bareback with a rope halter/mecate/reins, and she did pretty good. She was still a little nervous, but seems totally safe.
I rode her again today, bareback/rope halter, and she did so well, I decided to saddle/bridle her. I put a mullen type bit on her (it has short shanks, don't know exactly what it is, but since she didn't like the snaffles, I thought it was worth the try!) and let her just wear it for a short time while loose in the arena. She didn't mind it at all, so I saddled her and got on. She is such a good girl........she is still nervous with a rider, and wants to jog a little, but overall she is trying very hard to please. Her stop is rock solid, she will stop with a verbal whoa, or very light rein pressure. She neckreins lightly, and goes with just a lift of the reins and a kiss. Backs with a verbal cue or a slight tension on the reins. Did a sloppy haunchturn, so we will work on that from the ground a bit.
I am going to a weeklong Mark Rashid clinic in Colorado in July, and I think Lotti will be the horse that I take. We will have Mark work on trailer loading with us - she went in, but didn't want to back out, so I had to let her turn around in the trailer, and I don't like that type of exiting. No big deal, Mark will help us.
I really enjoy Lotti, I look forward to riding her, and I'm hoping she will be/already is (?) a great trail horse. It's kind of odd not knowing anything about her background.....she seems to have alot of training, so it just doesn't make sense how/why she ended up at the lot. I am assuming she is just a great horse that was in the wrong place at the wrong time......
Oh, she can sure hold her breath when being cinched!!! I think it's snug, and then walk her a bit, and it's loose! Tighten up, walk again, and it's loose again!!!! Too funny....I can't say that I blame her!

I have paid Cherri's bail in full, so she is coming to Oregon! I am also an approved adopter.
calgal98, thanks for the offer to help with her bail, but I was able to pay it in full, so please pass your pledge on to another horse.

Glad that you are so happy with her. So far Ranger (formerly known as Flash) doesn't seem to be coming down with strangles either. Knock on wood. I too have a hard time understanding why people dump nice horses. Did Cheri come down on the load with Lori last week? MJ

Yes, MJ she was on the same load as Ranger.........but she was only on the trailer for 3 hours, and she was the first one off. We are only about 140 miles from Yakima - way too close for my hubby's comfort! Wendy/Bend, OR

Hi Vicki,
Cherri, now known as Lotti (registered name is Ima Lotta Sass - couldn't call her sassy, cause she isn't!) is doing great.

That sounds like a great first ride! She'll relax once she realizes someone is riding her who doesn't jerk. Poor thing.
