Well it's been quite awhile since I've given any sort of update about the goofy boy. I'll try to get pictures tonight, I'm sure he'll be posing for you.
Gatsby is our "special" child. Sometimes I think he’s having a personality crisis, as he now fetches rubber horse balls (the ones with the handles)… although we’re still working on the bring it back to us part. His quarter crack on the left front is almost all the way healed, and the right front hoof isn’t that far behind. He had shoes put on his hind hooves for the first time last month, and I’ve noticed he’s much more balanced. He’s a treat to watch from the front porch swing after being turned out in the evenings after dinner. He prances around his large paddock like he’s royalty. During these hot days he’s glued to the box fan in his stall. I’m thinking of changing his name to “spoiled”. In the mornings I made the rounds (starting with him first of course) grooming while they eat breakfast. When I move on to the next stall he’ll will start tossing his head up and down, back and forth. He watches me very closely to make sure I’m not giving anyone else more attention then him. *sigh*
The rains have finally passed here, and my turf arena is back in good shape, so training will continue. I’ve been ground driving him all over creation getting him use to different environments. One thing is for sure, if he doesn’t take to jumping, he’ll make a fancy cart horse. I’m looking forward to cooler weather, so that you don’t have to wake up at 5:30 to get a decent workout in without risking heatstroke!
We’re not sure what the fall and winter months will bring us. There is a possible job offer at a remarkable barn in TN that I’m looking into. If that works out, then our fall will be filled to the brim with horsey activity. Although it’s really too soon to tell. All I know is whatever happens; I know it will be wonderful as long as we’re together.
Hard to believe it will be two years this month since he was on the feedlot. A couple weeks ago a rider at a local barn approached me when I had him out there getting use to a show (he loved taking in everything... his eyes were peeled) and asked if I’d let him go for 20k, I could only smile and shake my head. If they only knew his humble past of being sold for $575.00 on a western Washington feedlot. He is definitely not the same horse he was when he stepped off the trailer two years ago, his confidence in himself is astounding and he has too much ego for his own good.
Pictures coming, I'll try to get one of him in his purple flymask. ;D
