Once again, I can offer a back-up home for Winter if her funds get raised - I would pay for her transport to SD after QT.

I really like the look of this girl. Am I correct to assume that for $1100 she will be vetted, vaccinated, teeth done and have appropriate farrier work prior to deliver?

Typically the adopter pays for vet, farrier (as needed) and transport home, but if you need help with funds, please let us know! Winter is a gorgeous girl - I live the greys and she seems like a good girl.

I am new here and quite unfamiliar with how things work, but $1100 is almost too much for a horse with no known training that will likely need vet and farrier care. I would question her TB breeding as she is pretty thick in the neck and built downhill. She'd be a cute pleasure horse though, probably a nice 4-H mount.

The bail on this mare is $750, the other fees you are seeing represent a month of QT board... which of course you'd pay on whatever new horse you bought who came from a unknown crowded lot... So, I think her fees are right in the ballpark for a pretty, young, broke horse.
But, feedlot rescue is not for everyone.
Welcome! and let us know how you can help us help the horses!
Beth
MTA: the breed is most likely from the person who sold her to the feedlot owner... they often give him some info on the horse, or it's given at the auction she might have come from. In any case, you could look for a tatoo... if it's important to you....

Oh, that makes sense now. I looked in the FAQ's but there wasn't anything that explained transport and QT fees. If you had your own facility and trailer, you wouldn't need to pay for QT or transport, correct? And to call her broke would mean she had been saddled, bridled and tested for stop and go, and least thats what broke means to me. All that is shown is a guy on her with a halter and lead rope. Are there any other photos of her that would show her conformation more favorably? Sorry if these questions are out of the oridnary, I don't know much about rescue, let alone feedlot rescue.

May I suggest that you inquire via email about this horse with its Placement Specialist?
That way, you'll get a dialogue going with the one person who knows the most about the horse, rather than speculate looking at pictures. If she can't answer your question, she will find someone who can.
You can email Hilarie at: hillariesinger@aol.com

Feedlot rescue is a lot different that your typical rescue. You don't have the luxury of being able to ride and assess them to an extreme due to time restraints. It is a RESCUE. When the truck comes is is a death sentence.
You may find the horse has injury's or under lying medical conditions that need to be met. On the other hand you may find a horse that is your dream horse with no problems at all!
Bottom line is we try to save them from the horror of slaughter regardless.

Welcome to our board, ilovemytb! You will have a lot of questions and you should really speak to the placement specialist for Winter. She will have the most current info on the horse.
One thing about rescuing horses off the feedlot, is that time IS OF THE ESSENCE...this horse will be sent to slaughter THIS SATURDAY. Since things happen rapidly on the feedlot, it is not always possible to have a complete assessment of an animal. The volunteers try, of course, to do the best they can, but it is a difficult environment at any time of year. Having the horse in QT for its health after rescue also gives the caregiver time to more thoroughly get to know the animal.
One thing is for certain- horse rescue is NOT inexpensive...with these animals, found in any situation, may have any number of ailments or injuries...as well as many who are in perfect health, but are in the wrong place at the wrong time....and end up on the road to death. I suggest that you may want to read and learn about this tragic "industry" before deciding whether owning a rescue horse is for you.

Are you local iluvmytb? do you own other horses? come, and sit a while, and watch how this works... if you can, donate a little here and there, and help us help the horses. this is about saving lives.... not so much about shopping for your dream horse.
We have personally saved quite a few, and some have been old and infirm... and others young and had physical issues, and others who are young and dreamy... none of them deserved to face a long horrid journey to a horrific death.

Welcome to the RO board, Ilovemytb! I also wanted to add that I adopted CBER Cloud from the Kill Buyer's lot and, short of slight anemia most likely due to starvation prior to ending up on the lot, he's healthy, sound as sound can be, dead broke and a real sweetheart. He's steadily gaining weight and is so grateful for his food and all the attention he gets. He ended up being my dream horse without me knowing it. If you look at the horse's information page, the PS (Placement Specialist) listed there has the most information on the horse. You can also have a dialogue with her about what you are looking for, or what you aren't looking for. It's not a science, but you can partner up with a lot horse that meets or comes close to meeting your qualifications for a new horse. Many more of these horses than you'd expect are sweet, sound and healthy. Many were given up or dumped or ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time, not to mention owners being unable to afford to feed them, or even, as we've seen not that long ago, ended up at the KB's due to an owner's divorce. It's an amazing feeling, not only to get a "new" horse, but to also save a life. Em MTA -- it's also a pretty good sign when a horse CAN be ridden with a lead rope and halter, not to mention bareback, and all this in a lot atmophere, where most of the horses are scared or nervous.

I have been working with and training horses in the yakima valley for about the last eight years and have road literally hundreds of horses some of the gentalest, sound amazing horses I have ever sat my saddle on were at the feed lot. As said below not all the horses that end up there are there do to any fault of their own. Not all people value a horses life near as much as they should. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Welcome to the RO board, Ilovemytb!
