I was looking for a kind, beginner riding horse and found Cody. I have no idea how he is to ride however because the woman I got him from didn't know although she had him 7 years! I get to this small farm in Sedro Wooley last Friday night. Mind you, I am a looky lu on Dreamhorse and Craigslist like probably most of you are. I have asked about a few but never have gone beyond that. Well, Friday evening my kids who are in High School, were going to go to the football game and that left me with really nothing to do (well, I could have done laundry). So I called the woman from the ad and decided to take a ride. Well, Sedro Wooley is pretty far away, I guess I've never been there. Anyway, so I pull up to this cute little farm type setting and meet this gal, who by the way, is named Trish. So I go in the gate and walk up to meet Cody. He's a mess! not only does his main and tail consist of total dredlocks but he had those Bot Fly eggs stuck all down the length of his legs. It was icky to say the least. His muscle tone was less than ok and his feet were really unkept. So I politely told her that I'd "think" about it. Meanwhile I told her my story of my other horses and the activities we do with them and she starts crying...she says that it sounds perfect for Cody because she's been in such poor health and her husband...here was the clincher...who's name is Hans (my husbands name, not even close to common! ) will be upset when she tells him how perfect a fit and I'm not taking him. Ok, so at that moment I caved and gave her the money. I have taken it as a clear sign that I was meant to have him in my family. ...so....I go and pick him up on Saturday morning! I have since spent almost $800 on him! But I don't mind because he's turned to be the most gentle, kind and loving fellow ever! He spent the night at Pilchuck Vet and got the once over and his teeth ground down. He had never gotten his teeth done and his top teeth were hitting the base (below the bottom tooth line) of his jaw! I (and the vet) couldn't believe it. His feet turned out to be not so bad..no signs of founder or injury. He is on an antibiotic and Bute for his mouth ordeal. I'm calling him my "Extreme Equine Makeover" guy. I'm still trying to get the dreds out. I'll work on him this fall and winter and by next spring he'll be a great trail horse. Oh, he's 16, jet black with a small blaze with a black mane and tail and stands roughly 15 h. I have bonded with him almost immediately, it's weird he just fit right in like he's always been with us...thank you for reading my story...

It sounds like angels sent you to Cody; he obviously needed you desperately! You are such a good person to take on this horse and correct all of his previous person's mistakes. I'm sure he'll repay you with unconditional love and loyalty. I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say: we can't wait for before and after photos! Be sure to get some of the "Befores"!
Congratulations on your new boy.

Trish I know just how you feel!! And I bet alot of others on this board do too. I bought my first horse from a picture fer cryingoutloud. How friggin' sensible is that. And shes 1000 miles away. I am a ding-bat by my own standards.... But when you know you know...and you know you know so you gotta give the old left brain a rest and go with it . Congratulations!

Whut? You're not supposed to buy them that way? I thought a picture was plenty good enough. :-)

Heh, heh - I just had a thought though....I bet if I had let the rational part of my gestalt pick my horse I would not have gotten Rhiannon - and she is perfect for me in ways I would have had no rational way to know...

I will take some before pictures tonight. The vet called me this morning and told me that he really needs to be on a hay pellet/Sr. feed mush for 3 months. I guess the pockets around the teeth were just full of foul hay and has caused peridontal disease. I'm gotta really focus now to save his teeth. He's too young to be toothless. He has been really quiet the past two days, I'm sure he's in a lot of mouth pain. He isn't eating his antibiotics mixed with the Sr. so I have to make a paste and paste him, without those there is going to be trouble. I'm taking him back in 3 months for another check. There is a dental specialist there that will take him from this point on. I don't think some horse owners know that they need dental care or maybe the "old timers" didn't do it. That will sure shorten their lives..
