This is one of my fears. I am thinking about having all of mine freeze branded but I know some that have been stolen and they had brands.

Any pics, or a link?
I'd freezebrand, tattoo, microchip, all 3 if I could afford it. My dogs are all chipped, and my Guide Dog puppy is chipped AND tattooed in 2 places....

Yes, those 2 should be easy to pick out- very pretty mare, and pintos are always recognizable.

It's depressing to look at those ads...feel sorry for the owners AND the horses.
That gelding that was found looks familiar.....maybe cuz he's very close in appearance to Reno, but I don't think that's it....

That's such a horrible thing to have happen to owners and, especially, to the horses. Jingling that all will be found soon--in fat and happy condition.

Oooh, so close to home. I hope they recover them.
I have numerous laminated paper signs posted on perimeter fences of our property, in English and Spanish: "Warning: Horse Thieves, the horses on this property have brands and microchips"
It is a cheap and easy way to make your place a bit forbidding, especially the back 40 that you cannot see all the time. Only one of 6 is branded, but everyone is chipped.

Katie, good idea. I will do this as well. My Mustang is freeze branded, and nobody could do anything with him anyway without a major fuss being stirred, which would cause a lot of unwanted attention, but my silly Appy mare, who is not yet tatoo, branded, or micro-chipped, would walk up to anybody and just get into their trailer. She is going to get a chip, though, as soon as the vet comes out to do spring inoculations. I have a friend who has a freeze branding set up with all the number, because he brands for other people. I would have to apply for a unique brand, however, and get it approved before I could use it.

I would like to have mine freeze branded, How do you go about this? Do they use numbers or do yu need to make up a brand etc... Who do you contact to make sure it's registered? And who do you call to have them come out?

You might find some of the info you're looking for on this site: www.netposse.com/Links/linkshorseidentificationinfovenders.htmHere's an example of a freeze-mark: The first symbol indicates the breed registry or state of domicile. The stacked symbols represent the year of birth. The underlined symbols show the registration number or assigned state number. Here's what it looks like on the horse:

I had my TB mare branded by Kryokinetics years ago. The brand is a series of angles, each one indicating a number (the horse's registration number). One character indicates either the breed or state of origin, one of the numbers includes the horse's year of birth. I paid a fee and had a technician show up at my barn and do the deed. One tip is to keep your horse very, very still while being branded (ie sedated). My mare moved and the freezebrand came out only half readable.
Horse Aid has a "no kill" brand, for what it's worth. An HA that goes on the shoulder, supposed to indicate the horse is not for slaughter, for what that is worth. You can google it to find out more.
I like the idea of the neck freezebrands but find that the mane grows over them and they become less readable as the horse ages. Our elderly arab gelding has one, but is worthless now, only 1 or 2 characters readable. I think a shoulder brand does make lots of sense. Katie
