Several horses have come to Broken Oaks that are not suitable for adoption either because of injury or age. These retired horse deserve to live out their lives in dignity. We provide a "forever home" for these horses, but we need financial and volunteer help to ensure that their needs are met. Sponsorship through Broken Oaks not only provides for all of the horses' daily nutritional, health care, and grooming needs, but also gives sponsors a way to be personally and directly involved in the life of one of these beautiful animals. It costs about $100 a month to care for one horse. Through your monthly contribution to our Sponsor A Horse program, you will partner with Broken Oaks and act as a remote caregiver to the horse of your choice. As a sponsor, you will also receive a detailed history and photos of your horse, as well periodic updates. You will also be welcome to visit the horse at its home here at Broken Oaks. For a suggested $20 or more monthly donation, you can make a difference in the life of one of these retired horse. To sponsor, please choose from a list of horses in need:

Emma22 year old paint pony mare. Emmagirl was adopted by myself from the lot last February. She had been tortured and appeared to have been starved and deprived of water. She was in training for several months but did not improve much, she was just too traumatized from who knows how many years of horror. Broken Oaks took her for me several months ago and have been letting her relax and come to be comfortable around humans on her own terms. She has made wonderful progress and is happy and stress free now. Emma is in need of a sponsor! At the feedlot At Broken Oaks

From Broken Oaks websiteMagic21 year old mare. Magic: one evening we got a call from a frantic friend of a friend of a friend. The girl had twenty four hours to find a place for her horse or the authorities would impound the horse and the girl would face criminal animal abuse charges. Gary, from Broken Oaks went to pick up the mare. Magic was emaciated and too weak to walk up the ramp into the truck and required a lot of help to get in. It was questionable if she would survive but after a week of hand feeding her very small amounts of barley and hay several times a day she started improving. It took about three months before she was on full rations and light exercise. It took several years for her to learn to trust anyone and her psychological and physical scars will always be with her. Magic is a true tribute to the courage and will to survive of these beautiful animals. She continues to amaze and delight us every day. Magic needs a sponsor!

Sandi20 year old mare. Sandi we bought at an auction. In the auction ring, she was trying so hard to do some tricks that one of her past owners had taught her. She had a bad injury to a hoof, and was not doing well so no one would bid on her. We followed her owner out of the sale ring and talked him into letting us purchase her for a very reasonable amount. Sandi is in need of a sponsor!

SounderSounder is a 21 year old stallion that came from a large horse farm that was downsizing. He was one of the horses being culled out because of his age and his blood lines were not "popular." Sounder is "Mr. Personality" and thinks he is a human. He has a pet sheep and loves little children. Sounder needs a sponsor!

RainbowRainbow is an 12 year-old mare. She was rescued from a PMU farm in Alberta, Canada, she arrived here in the spring of 2003. She has chronic injuries that prevent her from ever being used as a riding horse. Rainbow initially mistrusts most people, but she really tries to be friendly. She gets along great with the other horses and appears to really enjoy having the space to move about. Rainbow has her "forever home" at Broken Oaks. She is in need of a sponsor as well!

[glow=red,2,300] Liberty[/glow] Liberty is a 27 year old mare. She was born on July 4, 1976 so her name really fits her. Her owner was in the process of moving and could not take her with them. We were contacted and Liberty now has her "forever home" at Broken Oaks. She is in very good shape for her age and should have many happy years ahead of her. Liberty is in need of a sponsor!

These stories make me cry, especially the mare who was trying so hard to do her tricks in the auction ring... my heart just breaks for these animals who give all they have and yet are tossed away. Thank God for the rescues!!!

The picture of Sounder is just too precious! ;D I agree. He is beautiful. What breed is he. He kinda looks like an Arabian. I like the way it looks like he is kissing the little girl.
