We have had Sierra for 2 years now. When she came to us she had awful feet, and her right rear hoof always seemed to chip off along the outside. Well, now her feet look great, and she has been doing just fine, until about a month ago. I noticed her resting that foot more than usual, and this week she is off on it when she tries to do anything more than walk. Not sure it is in the foot, the trimmer dropped by and took a look, couldn't find anything obvious, but she is definately not using it normally. Not sure where to start. Full ex-rays, hip to toe tip? She is Appy, about 14, and has always been healthy since we have owned her.

my vote is abcess if her hooves were bad before, but good now, and it's only one foot. tincture of time... then wrap and cover until it stops draining... they HURT... and get worse until they pop, then usually they are in instant relief.

I've noticed that the Appys I have had seem to be waaaaaaay more prone to abcesses...

If it just started, sounds like an abscess brewing. If not, start with a full lameness exam, then go from there. Your vet may recommend X-rays (Even if it is an abscess, to see how deep and where it is). You could try doing flexions and walk, trot, canter, to see if that effects it at all...if it doesn't, more than likely it is in the hoof. Usually abscesses pop up like this without any sign, and normally bute does not help pain wise. Even if your farrier didn't 'see' anything, does not mean there is not one deep inside where it may not be easy to detect. Tis the season for sore feet and abscesses! Soak, soak, soak! You can put some Icthamol on it and wrap it if you don't have time to soak or Numotizine to help draw it out.

It has been one heck of a year with abscesses. One of my mares has had 2 and there is a chance that she may have another. The shoer thinks that she may have wacked her foot but he is not ruleling it out. I freaked when her foot blew out last month. There really is nothing that can be done. It has been dry wet dry wet around here. I have to wait for her one foot to grow out to slap shoes on her. Sigh. feeling your pain. She was lame for 3 days last week with no sign of anything except a little heat.

Found a shallow cut across the inside of her right knee after I posted this. Was very shallow, but was obvious from the shape that she must have been kicked, probably from Gypsy. There wasn't any real swelling, but that doesn't mean it wasn't hurting. She is much better on it now.

Horses LOL they can be so mean to each other. Just think if they were human they would be calling the cops for every ear pinning.
