Did you know that if you donated money to go for a specific horse and the money was not used for that horse, that legally, CBER needed to offer you a refund?
If you sent money for a horse and it shipped or was outright adopted and did not state IN WRITING that CBER could use your donation for another purpose, they should have returned it.
I had countless discussions with Sam and Marlene about this and they swore they would let people know if they needed to move funds to something else. I wondered how in the world they were going to make the time for that.

I am glad you brought this point up, this is the one thing I never understood. You would often see money donated to a horse, whom was shipped or adopted outright, but I've never seen where they mentioned that money donated returned. How much 'lost' money is out there in someone elses pocket???

I always stated on my paypal messages to use the money for a specific horse, but if the funds were not needed for that horse, to apply the funds wherever needed ( implied on another horse, but I was fine as long as it was used to help horses...). I think a lot of people put in notes like that. I wanted to make sure the money went where it was needed

Restricted and Non-Restricted revenue. . . An organization cannot use money donated for a specific purpose for any other purpose such as overhead or buying trucks or underwear. The books need to show where money came from and where it went.

Now, that's an interesting twist to things. Some of us have kept records of where our donations went. . .and. . .for whom. What we don't know is what happened to the horse! I doubt there is any way to ever track it at this point. Lying, deceit, and dishonesty of this scale is not trackable.

If you use PayPal you maybe able to recover your records with the notations attached to them. It is worth checking on. I know I am going to.

So if some donations were not reported on the tax returns there would be a paypal record of those donations to CBER correct? So if enough people contacted the IRS and the IRS investigated then maybe they would find a discrepancy in what was reported as donations? I think if enough complaints were made about them to the IRS then maybe at least the 501 C 3 status would be revolked. They really should not have that status anyway, but it does give the illusion of being a legit rescue.

I used to be on the distribution list for CBER's Paypal and that is how I know. Sam and Marlene arbitrarily applied funds where ever they were needed even if the donation did not state that. They were very creative about moving money around and I know I never knew where the excess money went. I used to bug Sam and Marlene about that as well as the whole inuerment issue. For some reason, Sam believes she is omnipotent.

I just went to my PayPal account. You can look up the history on your account for as far back as you want to. The only time I was ever refunded money was when someone else was doing the collecting when there were group adoptions. One was to Aimee Wheeler for a horse named Jackpot. (I think he was a grey thoroughbred). One was to Nickie for a horse named Wiggles. I do not remember what happened to those horses. The other horses I had forgotten I had donated to were Champ, Melissa, Romeo and Holiday. I think that Hytyme took Melissa. A gal on Julianes Serenity Training has Romeo. What happened to Champ and Holiday. Does anyone know? I think I remember seeing Champ at the Horse Expo in Washington a few years ago. Is that correct? I do not remember Holiday.
Lavender and Meadow were the last horses I donted to. And in most of my notes attached to my payments it says to be used for....(whatever horse I sent money for).

CBER re-uses names, so I do not know for sure if this is the "right" Champ, but last I heard Jamie/jtjedi is still "fostering" a horse named Champ. If Jamie still has him, then he is in good hands Also, when I received inquiries about adopting Champ, I forwarded to Jamie. I believe whoever gets him is at her discretion now.

Is this the horse you are talking about? CHAMP - ON LOT 7/06 SPONSORED 12/06 TO 4/07 FOSTERED 4/30/07 TO Approximately 17-20 years old, 16h. Older Chestnut TB gelding with some white markings. He's really a sweetie and has not given his foster mom one ounce of trouble. legs seem clean. Gentle guy that put his nose in the halter! He has no tattoo. Great bone and shoulder, etc. Shoes/trims, bathes, UTD on shots and teeth floating. He has definitely had some excellent handling. Is currently being worked on the ground, as he's now out of QT. Update 11/17/06 - Some VERY exciting news..Champ is a riding horse! Yippee. He is really broke, like been there, done that, broke. Update 11/21/06 - Another update from Cam.... ""Champ is very well broke. Today we did leg yields, half passes, and flying lead changes. $675"

I think she has him available on a contract and that he is a nice boy but older so probably not up to heavy use but I'm pretty sure she said hes good for light trail. She could use the room to take in some of the horses people want her to work with if he got placed.

Yes, that is the Champ I am talking about. The time frame would be the same as my donation was on 7-27-06. I do remember him as being a nice older chestnut colored gelding.

Hi all-
Yes, I still have Champ. I officially adopted him last year.
I talked to Sam directly about payment and she let me "have" him, free of charge as a thank you for fostering him for so long and for all the medical care I have put in to him. I asked if I should work something out financially with the $ donors to refund their money. She told me not to worry about it.
I adopted him to have more control over his future adoption and advertising and to separate from the CBER mess. It was at that point that I stopped being a CBER volunteer/foster home.
He is doing great. Sassy and healthy. He's no longer on med's and is now going barefoot! ;D He is ridable for light trail and in the arena. He's an excellent newbie babysitter.
I would love to find him a forever home, as I did not think he would be here for so long. But he has a home here for life, not to worry!
I still have Mai Tai (aka Flame), as well. He's is one fun little horse and is becoming an Extreme Trail competition trooper!
Jamie
