I spoke with Shelly yesterday and Baby Ruth started to lose weight and getting somewhat listless this past week in spite of Shellys best efforts. Baby Ruth has not got the strangles from the lot yet. She increased feed and put the blanket I sent on her. I'm having a vet out tomorrow to do a full evaluation of her health, blood screen, nasal swab, pg exam, teeth exam and float if needed. I'm worried about this mare, I have not met her yet, but already love her. Please send jingles her way. I cannot lose another horse this soon after Tates death.

Yes, she is still in QT, she has been there since Shelly picked her up from the lot on 11/12/06, I was hoping to bring her home after a 90 day QT.

If she is getting sick, please please have Shelly give her penicillin, that is what has saved the sick ones for us others with ones that have gotten really bad, High dose penicillin injectible saved Blaze and Adam and others I and Sam took off. And it had to be given quite a while and then oral antibiotics given. Also, an immune stimulant may help. I know Shelly does not like to do IM penicillin, but its a life saver if the vets give the go ahead. Also, as Mickey says, does she have someplace with shelter to put her? The weather is going to get really cold here in the next few days. I am not being critical, just letting you know what worked, she may have even picked up the bug there at Shelly;s as that is 2 mos ago she was removed.

Baby Ruth update: The vet appt for today got cancelled due to the high winds....grrr, but, on a better note, Shelly said Baby Ruth seems very good today, running the fence fine and appears well, thin, but well. The Vet will be on Monday, I'll be in contact with shelly everyday from now till then, and if anything goes wrong, I'll get a Vet there no matter what. I just cannot wait for this time to be over and Baby is home with me. Thanks for your jingles and I'll keep everyone informed. Baby Ruth never got strangles from the lot and I'm hoping it was just the wormer(safechoice) I sent made her feel bad for a few days....She also had already had 1 ten day tx of tucoprim and 1 seven day tx of tucoprim. I agree about the penicillin halfwayhome. I want every single germ on her dead....

I sure hope she's better soon.. I could be from the wormer, I had one horse that could not handle the (Fenbendazole.) She was rather allergic to the stuff. So, I just used Ivermectin on her that seemed to work just fine. It took her about 4/5 days to recover from the allergic reaction...

Does Babe Ruth have a thick blanket on I know Shelly does not have shelter and it is going to be 8 degree's tonight. Shelly has also had pupuria on her place..IMO I would not wait for the vet I think she needs to be on Penicillian..

Oh Deb, I'm so glad to hear that Alabama is pulling through! I haven't wanted to ask because I haven't wanted to add to your stress. Happy happy horse dance!
Modified to add: and I'm glad that the Babester is looking better today, too! I didn't mean to hijack her thread!

She doesn't have shelter for sure? Does anyone know when Callie's foal is due? That girl needs a nice warm place to hang out starting yesterday...... I know Shelly does not have shelter and it is going to be 8 degree's tonight. Shelly has also had pupuria on her place..IMO I would not wait for the vet I think she needs to be on Penicillian..

I know I had talked to Shelley at one point about QT board but she was full. She has a field somewhere else and paddoaks at the ranch. I think she had a guy putting up pens at one point so maybe she has some covered stall? I haven't been there, but I remember Syndis posts about Annies shelter. They had one of those carport thingies they set up for her, but I know she had trouble getting up and that they could move if needed.

Baby Ruth update: Baby Ruth had the vet out yesterday, no sign of strangles at all. The vet did a blood screen and coggins, floated her teeth, and will be returning on monday to give 4 way, west nile and do a nasal swab per my request. Baby Ruth appeared to have a heavy worm load and the Vet believes the safeguard wormer got her a litle down. She does have a heart murmur and is aged about 25. So, although I'm not crazy about the heart murmur, I think all and all she's going to be just fine and should be home with me by 2/10/07. Her new name will be Sione when she starts her new life here. Pretty name, and I'm glad she's feeling better.
I'd been under the impression that Safe-Guard was once of the mildest--except at double doses for encysted strongyles--but I guess not. Another thing I thought I knew was that Coggins isn't required for horses who go from WA/OR/MT. Or is a Coggins just a precaution?

Wonderful to hear things are looking better. The stress and exposure on the lot is probably enough to make any horse feel miserable . Get rid of those worms and all her shots and she'll feel like new horse. I am so excited for you Tate. I bet you can't wait to get her home!!

Glad to hear she only has a worm problem. The Arabian mare next to my Mustang had a worm problem her owner cleaned the place with bleach. Don't know if that is a common thing or not but it took a lot of time for her worms to go away. I love Babe's new name. Very pretty.

I also think Safeguard is one of the mildest safest wormers that is available to us...that being the case I personally would be somewhat hesitant to hit her with 4Way and West Nile simultaneoulsy. West Nile can make healthy horses sick and I have seen 4 way do the same? I would reccomend doing one at a time...with a few weeks inbetween....and when I say one at a time I mean Tet then Flu , then Enceph....etc...
A little more expensive...but way easier on a horse that is not at 100%.....

I'm glad things are looking up. I had a student named Sione. I like the name. Baby Ruth update: Baby Ruth had the vet out yesterday, no sign of strangles at all.
