Just another day, until a urgent call from a horse friend. Help we are trying to organize a horse rescue. This little gelding is thin, the owners are not feeding him and the other animals are thin. We are worried about this horse. "We called the Humane Society five times", they can't do anything .. What can we do??
I replied have you talked to him about selling the horse, she said he will sell the horse.. he wants an offer..
I tell my friend I will be there in later to see if I can help..
So, I put a some hay in my truck, drive to the location get my friend and go over to look at the horse. Well, we go into the barn there is good hay and grain in the barn. The man is very nice, doesn’t talk English very well but we talk a little, and I get to see the horse. I take the blanket off him and the horse is a "little afraid" but warms right up. The horse is thin, maybe a 3 or 2.5 on the scale.. We talk to the owner and find out the horse is a Reg Arabian (with great blood lines). We talk some more, my friend makes an offer on the horse .. the man doesn't know what he wants for the horse.. she counters the offer. He will get back to my friend. He has to think about it..
Well, the horse has a nice run-in-shelter, and clean water, and it had a grain bucket on the ground. It looked like he had been feed may not to the level that he needed.
I talked to the man I said the horse is very thin, and it would take some rehab to get the horse ride-able. I tried to educate in a very nice way to feed 15 lbs of hay and the calf's need more hay.. He was rather surprised at the amount of hay to feed..
We go back to my friends house that faces the horse pasture, I pull the hay out of my truck and leave some bales just in case... Then I look back at the pasture the man just took about 30 lbs of that hay and feed the animals and grained them.. do you think maybe he just needed some education, or was it just for show.....
At least the gelding had some dinner today.. .. more of the story to come.
PS This owner has a beautiful home, barn, and property (450,000) and new trucks and cars .. there doesn’t look like a shortage of money here... (Friday2/2/07)
