ANIMALI FARM PMU HORSE UPDATE

Thank You to everyone who has adopted a pregnant mare in the last few weeks. The staff and volunteers at The Animali Farm have worked round the clock trying to place the pregnant mares as we are running out of time to get them to their new homes.

The deadline to adopt a pregnant mare had been extended through Sunday evening, February 11, 2007. On Monday morning we will have to take the remaining pregnant mares off of the website.

Several of the ranchers that we are working with will not be able to keep all of their mares. Many of the mares that are not adopted by the end of the weekend will end up in an auction. The ranchers have reduced their prices on the horses that are in the most need of an immediate home.

PERCHERONS: There are 13 pregnant Percheron mares still needing homes. All but one of them are registered mares, and several are broke to drive. In addition to this there are 4 Percheron mares that are not pregnant, that also desperately need homes. There are also quite a few geldings that are trained to drive. There is one gelding, named Kai, that is a coming three year old. The rancher will be sending him to auction in a week or so if he is not adopted.

BELGIANS: There is a well trained team of pregnant Belgian mares still needing homes. There is also a 3 year old Belgian gelding that the rancher will be sending to auction if he is not adopted in a week or so, his name is King.

CANADIAN HORSES: There are 2 registered Canadian mares, and 4 non-registered Canadian mares that need homes. The registered Canadians are bred to a registered stallion and the unregistered mares are bred to a fjord stallion.

QUARTERHORSES: There is one pregnant quarter horse mare still needing a home, and a few that are not bred that also need homes right away.

APPALOOSAS: There are 38 pregnant appaloosa mares still needing homes. We will not be placing any appaloosas after the deadline (February 11,2007). These mares desperately need homes. NOW IS THE ONLY TIME THAT YOU WILL BE ABLE TO HELP THEM.

ALSO IN DESPERATE NEED: Kai and King are three year old draft horse geldings. The rancher desperately needs to lighten her load. If these two are not placed within a week she will ship them. They are priced at $2000 delivered. $1100 of that cost is what it is to deliver them. The meat buyer has already told the rancher that he will pay $850 for them as they are big, heavy horses. She had dropped them down to that price hoping that our adopters will be able to give them a home. IS THERE ANYONE OUT THERE THAT CAN ADOPT THESE TWO?

If you have questions about shipping, training or other things not related to adopting a pregnant mare please wait until after the deadline to call. We would love to help everyone, but we must have the phone lines open this weekend for adopters to get through.

I just don't understand the thought process here...You lose your PMU contract...(Does anyone still HAVE a PMU contract?) but all of these mares are still bred, proliferating the sheer number of horses...and then they must be disposed of before they are TOO pregnant to transport...(so why breed if you need to lessen the load?). And then if they do not get adopted by us folks, the horses go to auction anyway...and what kind of prices would the rancher get there? Can't be as high as an adopter would be willing to pay, right? So maybe the ranchers could lower their prices even more, just to save the animals they 'love'...and increase the chances of adoption. (I know they dropped $ on some of them, but most prices are still pretty high, IMO...)

Sigh...I just don't quite get it. But maybe I'm better off not getting it.....

What I don't get - is what gene are human beings missing that they can look at any horse (or dogs and cats in the case of other countries) and even THINK about killing them? I have a hard enough time understanding it w/ cattle and other animals that usually don't look to humans as caregivers, but God, these people just can not be human.

It looks like the geldings Kai and King were owned by Winston Curtis and his wife. It says he got out of the PMU business a couple years ago. It appears that Winston loved and cared for his drafts and did a magnificent job of matching and training teams. Unfortunately he died of cancer in October. Reading between the lines, I think his wife can't keep these horses anymore, is trying to keep the teams together. Kai (percheron) and King (belgian) look like they are the only two untrained/unmatched geldings, thus her apparent need to "dump" them first - probably to buy time for the older, trained teams.

I completely agree with the complete lack of resposibility shown by the herds of pregnant, untrained mares.

Cybercat, you hit the nail on the head.

Most of these farmers continued to breed their former PMU horses way past when all hope of renewing PMU contracts had faded. Most lost their contracts in 2004 or so. Some of these horses are, quite simply, a "foal crop," something which has always provided a source of revenue for them.

Winston Curtis was a decent guy. He worked hard training his former PMUs to drive, hoping it would make them easier to sell. And he held off on breeding most of his former PMUs.

Animali does a great job. It is just two women doing it all. I adopted 3 Appy pmu's through Animali in 2005. They are very nice mares! I have seen a handful of appies that came from this same ranch, and all seemed quite well bred.

Even if you cannot adopt, you can donate money to lower the adoption fee of a particular horse, which makes it easier for someone else. Also, if any of these horses are crosslisted on PMUrescue.org, you might be able to get a incentive rebate----mine was $75/horse, which helped a teensy bit.

There are some absolutely stunning horses still available. I wish I could take more. There are 5 Blue Roans that are beautiful. All of these horses will be lost if not adopted today.
