Ok, so what are these "jingle" thingies? Cuz I'm getting exhausted. (where DID that term come from?) Poor little Whiskey (there's a picture of him under our thread) was down this a.m. He threw himself several more times before I could get him under control. Got him walking... got some oil down him...some banamine for pain and he settled. Has had 3 bowel movements today - but as soon as the banamine wears off - he's down and thrashing again. I'm back in the house trying to thaw my fingers... will head back out in a bit. I could use your good vibes though.

"jingles" are good vibes and thoughts. I don't know where the term originated. I am sorry to hear about sweet little Whiskey. I hope he comes through this quickly!! I'll be sending my jingles for a swift recovery. Hang in there. Have you called a vet for advice? It sounds like you're doing everything that a vet would recommend, but you never know, the vet may be able to help. I'm lucky and mine are great about phone in consultations. They only come out if I'm to neurotic to deal (insist that they come NOW, even though they think everything if fine ) or they feel by my description that it is necessary.

Ha - your vet sounds like mine. They pretty much feel like I can handle most of it - they'll give me most of what I need with instructions on how to administer. I'm thankful for them.
Yeah - they/we feel it's a wait and see thing. He's not in distress (other than the pain, which is always hard to see) but has good capillary refill, is having movements.... We're just trying to keep him comfortable.
My dad's an ole cowpoke. He swears it's the change in weather.

We are all jingling for you from Westfir, dcsmmi and Whiskey! Get that poop and/or gas out and settle down that gut! (That was for Whiskey, dcsmmi, unless you are feeling a little backed up yourself.)

I think we're outta the woods! =) Still taking it slow on solid foods...much to his dismay.... Whew..what a long night. Is there an unwritten law of the universe that says colic has to come with a monsoon??

I believe there is a law. It also states that along with the monsoon, it should always come at night, and on Sundays when ever possible, esp. if you have plans to be elsewhere. Must laugh!

My last serious colic was my personal horse - Buddy. My baaaby. Ohmigod. We live in the middle of no where... you'd think you'd be safe.. but noooo. Neighbors cow got out, walked uphill a mile and a half, found the bag of sweet feed - and very graciously drug it over to within reach of my nosey mustang. Not only did it appear that he (or they - who's to say?) ate almost 50 lbs of the stuff - but the plastic liner in the bag was also chewed up. I spent the night crying, walking, changing clothes (biggest friggin raindrops I have ever seen), crying some more... getting myself soaked in oil trying to get it down him.. and eventually sleeping in the truck outside his stall. The day before and the day after were, of course, sunny and warm.

Yes, it is a horse that horses always colic on Sunday and during really awful weather, and always when you have an important commitment.
I once had to blow off a huge, really important sales pitch with a big company in Texas because my 26 year old horse colicked and had to have surgery, and of course I had to be with him. I nearly lost my job. When I called my boss (who went in my place, very angry with me) to update him on the horse, he put me on speaker phone in the conference room, where he sat (still fuming) with the big wigs. Well, turns out all these execs were also horse-loving Texans who followed the colic surgery drama like a mini-series. We got the 3 million dollar contract that very day (almost unheard of), and my boss gave me a bonus exactly the same as the surgery bill.....
Glad your guy is doing better!

What a GREAT story WMF. Good to be able to look back and see the humor in all of it.
Glad to hear your Whiskey is doing better, Darla. I think you could use a good VACATION!!

and of course, we are having brilliant sunshine at the moment! Last night was miserable in Oregon...wind blowing the rain sideways, LOTS of rain and wind...my animals are soaked because they'd rather hunker down in the storm instead waiting out in the shelters.

jessiegirl1981, you are very sweet. I think my attitude towards emergencies and scary situations reflects my Pisces nature to live in La-La Land (otherwise referred to as Neverland when I imagine I am with Johnny Depp) and go to my happy place. Ironically, I am extremely serious, analytical, and intense at times. Go figure ... But I just love being here, and I guess it shows. (Just saw the sweetest logo that I have claimed as mine now: "I am too blessed to be stressed." Isn't that fab? Those anti-CBER stress cases need a bit of that phrase, I believe.) dcsmmi, I don't plan on stalking you, but am so curious where in Oregon you are. You could PM me if you feel so inclined. When you say you live in the middle of nowhere, I imagine you live near me (since I live in the woods), even though I guess there could be more than just one Nowhere. (I guess I am a little self-centered to think I live in the middle of the only Nowhere.) Truly, I would have joined you on your BMW (Bowel Movement Watch) yesterday in the pouring rain and howling wind if I were close enough. Do you live on my property, and I haven't noticed yet? I am SO glad Mr. Whiskey is doing better. He must feel like a million bucks now. Thank you for being his mom.

Nah, I think there ARE a few middle of Nowhere's out there..as opposed to the Armpit of Oregon - which I'm quite convinced is somewhere near Burns. (Although the lack of mud makes that Armpit pretty appealing right now...)
Have you checked for tracks? I may be camping on the back 40. =) Nah... I'm near Roseburg - east toward Glide. Couple side roads, a dirt track and some gates...& you've found me. You have to watch for the attack turkeys (wild ones - and not the kind in the bottle) and if you're sight seeing without an invite - you may get chased off. Not a bad thing really, but years ago this area had a meth lab that made residents very protective of this quiet little dirt road. If I hear a car, it's coming here. No door to door salesmen, no trick-or-treaters... very quiet. Unless I'm yelling at my dog. ha

Our places sound so similar except that I am east of Eugene, not Roseburg. No salesmen, no visitors (except the UPS man), and thank God not as many meth addicts up and down the U.S. Forest Service Road. And if you hear me yelling, it is usually at myself (due to my high dork quotient). Are you anywhere near Dillard? I know a dirt road that takes about two hours to travel only a few miles on ... It is beautiful where you are I imagine. Leanne, you still need to visit. The Cowboy/girl Cabin opens up in March ...

Ahh.. let's see.. the wilds of Oaky-ville or Westfir? =)
We're north of Dillard - but I went to high school in that area. Go TROJANS! Oh yeah...we got made fun of.

Westfir, Baby! (I just figured out why you were made fun of ... for reasons some will understand immediately, I didn't get the Trojans connection to being picked on right away. I am so sorry. I wouldn't have made fun of you. )
