hey all, maybe somebody can help me with this we went trail riding in Winthrop about a month ago at the Sun Mtn Lodge and had a great time. My question is about the trail muzzles they put on all the horses. I think it was a great idea for a trail outfit, because with complete beginners grass snatching can frequently be a problem. They were just soft fabric like a ribbon tied around onto the bridle and had mesh on the muzzle. Has anyone seen anything like this, I forgot to ask if they made them themselves and just assumed I could find something like it, well not finding it... I thought it might be good for my son, he's great at pulling the head back up if he doesn't pay attention and she starts to snatch grass, but what a pain for a little guy! The trail horses at the lodge knew they had their muzzles on and never even try for grass, even when it's brushing them in the face! anyone seen anything like this? cassandra

Rather than a muzzle, google 'daisy rein' - it attached to the headstall at the poll, runs down the neck (over the mane) and attaches to the D rings on your saddle. Very simple - could probably be done with baling twine - but it pulls on the horses mouth when it tries to lower its head too low - you can adjust how low you want them to be able to go...............Simple, and might just work....
You could also use it as an antibucking rein - cause the horse can' get its head down...........

You can purchase a Breathable Trail Muzzle through Wyoming Outdoor Industries. Search for Muzzle. They were originally designed to keep your pack horse from snacking and yanking on your arm while going down the trail. I think they were originally designed to go over a halter. I use them on my horses occasionally. I have found they do not interfere with most bits either. The horse can still drink water threw the mesh without having to take it off.
I usually keep one folded up in one of my saddle bags. You never know when it's going to come in handy.
