I have an older mare that rides in a side pull. She once upon a time rode in a english and western bridle so I know she has had a bit in her mouth. I need to get her using one again so I need recommendations on what type of bits(Eng/Western) and how to go about re-introducing her to it. Please help!

Why do you feel she needs a bit?
Side pulls can be very effective if they are fitted and used properly. A full cheek snaffle would be a good place to start if you are sure this is the direction you want to go. It has the same type of pressure to give her direction to move away from.

My favorite snaffle is a french link. That's the kind that has two joints in the mouth instead of one. It tends to lie across the tongue nicely. I like a full cheek, but they are hard to find in french links. So I use loose ring snaffles mostly. A thickness appropriate to the architecture of the inside of the horse's mouth, and never hugely thick.
I ride my horses in both sidepulls and bits. I like to switch around for variety. To transition a horse from one to the other, simply put on a snaffle bridle and put your sidepull over that. Ride with two reins. Ride off the sidepull and gradually add contact with the snaffle rein. Hope that helps.
I have to ride in a snaffle because I compete in dressage events, and bits are required. I wish I could ride my horse in a sidepull, because he goes better in that!
