Vegas has been off the lot for 2 months and has been healthy so far. How many others are there out there who have remained healthy. I also got Jade in April and other then the snots she has also been healthy. I did have Tyler, but he died before he could get off the lot. Who else has apparently avoided illness? We hear about the poor souls who have been so ill and the ones who have passed but not much about who has remained healthy. Sometimes I wonder if many of the horses are coming from out of state. Maybe been run through a several auctions etc. Any thoughts?

Tabby (now named Kaleigh) was VERY sick coming off the lot - but not strangles. Bad snots. A couple weeks of penicillin and a few months of eating and she's fine. She came off the lot Sept 1. I know she came from WA - not sure if she went direct to FLO or went through auction. (I believe it was direct)
*********
Angel (CBER Sunrise) was not sick at all. She came off the lot early -summer (I think). No idea about her history - no tattoo to trace.

Speckles and Spirrah came off the lot in mid-September. Speckles was sick with snots for just a few days, but they both got abx. Neither ever got strangles, and both have remained very healthy. I'm glad to say they are very happy and looking good, despite the mud masks they have both decided to use to improve the complexion!

Both my CBER horses managed to get off the lot without getting sick. I adopted Gypsy (Fay on the feedlot) last year at this time and Dream last April. Some of Gypsy's lot mates were reported to be sick with Strangles after they were adopted, but she never got it.

I got Arrow (Hagar) in April, he spent a month at Hytymes, but never got sick, and he's been home since June, and just fine and dandy, and did I say spoiled? Randel hat the yuckies, but he recovered, and is now at Angies.

Beauty had strangles, but recovered, and is now kicking up her heels (literally)... Merryana had a slight cold, never got strangles...
Both girls are READY and anxious to come down to warm, sunny Southern California as soon as I can arrange for transport!!! (AND the weather cooperates!!!)....I am so eager to see them! Angi has arranged for their boarding and she'll help with their training! I am SO GLAD that everything has worked out!!!

Justin got off the Lot OK in Feb, but a moderate case of strangles developed during the trip down here. Aura and Diego only had snots by March.

Web and Manny (Magicman) came off the lot in late October. Qt'ed at Sam & Deb's, respectively. Had snot and swollen glands in early November. Never abscessed, but were treated proactively with penicillin. Came home to CA mid-December. Are perfectly healthy!

1%-2% of treated horses dies from strangles. 15% of untreated die. I would say that sitting on the lot for a few weeks in the cold in Yakima would count as "untreated." Therefore, on average, 1 or 2 out of every 10 horses that contract strangles on the lot will die. This has nothing to do with a "mutated strain," this is just the statistics for "typical strangles."
modified to add: I think the survival rate of the horses coming off the lot through cber is better than this.

You know, I suppose that if we wanted to really be technical, we could go through the Adopted horse list for this year and try to account for all the horses health on that list, and then there's the In Memory thread too...do we need to do this for someone?

Post by caryn on Dec 27, 2006 23:59:34 GMT -5
I don't know that we need to get technical. We've lost a lot of horses and I think this thread is a good reminder that we DO save horses and they can have happy lives with their new families. The truth is, I really feel that the horses that we save from slaughter and lose to illness were still saved. They left this world with loved ones surrounding them. I think we all know that the majority of adoption stories have really HAPPY endings for horse and human, but sometimes we need to be reminded. It's been a really difficult few months and I appreciate this thread. JMHO

no, I agree, caryn...I wasn't meaning to be critical or anything. I was just thinking out loud about ways we could account for stats if someone was wanting that type of info...(like the State vets...)you are right about needing to be reminded about the good things that have happened with the horses. We've heard many sad things over the last month or two, so we do need to be reminded about the joyous things that are occurring for the horses too and our members as well!

I like you "thinking out loud thoughts" c-cat I didn't mean to criticize, guess I was thinking out loud too. Your right, the stats would be useful. I guess that I'm just missing the "adopted" threads...happy stories and pictures of happy horses for the most part.

Oh good...I didn't think you were critical either. Its just so difficult to tell the "tone" that someone is typing in sometimes. I miss the Adopted threads too. I had an idea about that, but on the Staff page, ok?

I think it would be good to have that kind of follow-up. I doubt that CBER has the time or volunteer staff to do all that research - there have been so many horses.

I just noticed a photo of Jenkins on a mustang rescue site. Jenkins was the stout little black BLM gelding that was on the lot a some months ago. He looks fine. Here's the link. Click on the "rescue horses" link to see him. www.whisperingwindsequinerescue.com

We picked up Barker for Horsediva from the lot on October 15th. He seemed fine but about two weeks later he broke out with a HUGE ABCESS-STRANGLES. But has been QT'd for two months and got a vet okay after. He healed like a champ and was surprised as his abcess was the biggest I had ever seen, and deep too. Poor guy. But he is doing great in his new home. Did have to give him Red Cell after, as he was slightly anemic per his blood test after. Our horses got the strangles (all 6) when we brought Applejack home from the lot (April). She never had abcesses but the vet said she was probably a carrier. We were able to let all of ours get it and then address the issue. A hard descision but the best for us now that all have had it and we are safe for awhile. The Vet gave all a clean bill of health and in good shape too.

Not to pick nits, but to correct a little math error so things don't look worse than they were: 1 to 2 % of treated horses dying, would be one or two per 100, not one or two per ten. 15%untreated horses dying out of 100 would be 15 horses, which is about where I think it is.
I have four CBER horses. Only one had anything wrong with her health, and that was Jewel, who rode down to CA with Hagar (she still talks about how handsome he is). She went to Ranger's upon leaving the lot, was treated with antibiotics for about a week, and has remained healthy ever since then.

I have 4. 2 came from the lot August of 05 , one April 06 and one June 06. The only one that had ANYTHING was the last-but all he had was a cough and snotty nose. Course of SMZ's and he got better quickly, still had the occasional cough from time to time-but nothing really.

So I rounded to whole horses: 1 or 2 out of every 10 untreated horses die - pretty common. Treated would be 1 or 2 out of every hundred - pretty infrequent. modified to add: I would say that your horses at your house getting food, water, warmth, antibiotics, wound care, etc. would be "treated". A horse in a pasture with only hay thrown to it out in the cold would be "untreated"

I'm so glad this thread is here, thought I'd write something about my CBER horses. I got Carmelita in May 06 she had a snotty nose but tested negative for strangles, she is now in Biggs Ca doing fantastic! Got Bubba in Aug. 06 he was healthy when he arrived other than lesions on his weenie which have been taken care of as of last month (pre cancerous) but one of the sweetist horses I've ever owned. Tatum was at Deb's for about a month recovering from strangles arrived here in Oct 06 and is healthy, Cheyenee (Ashley) arrived in Oct 06 and developed strangles but was treated with penicllin and got better and now she is sick again with snotty nose and cough and on antibiotics. It's the cough that is so persistant . I love all my CBER horses. Brenda
