Shawna's farrier came out this past Wednesday, 11/7, to look at Raley.
He said Raley has rotated her coffin bone in both front feet, and she is stress foundered in all four feet. He said she may recover with extensive trimmings, but he is doubtful. Even if we get her permanently comfortable, she will most likely only be able to be a pasture pet.
Shawna said: I wish the outcome was different; she is such a sweet mare.
Shawna is contacting The Founder Rehabilitation Ranch in California to see what they have to say. Raley is comfortable right now and eating well. We are going to wait a couple of weeks before making any decisions.
Please think loving and healing thoughts for Raley.
Mary

Beth at Found Rehab has all the information and experience necessary. If anyone can help, it will be her. I am very happy to hear she will be contacted. In the meantime, give Raley plenty of hugs from me. Too, too bad it had to happen to such a good one. As suspected, she would have never survived the trip to Mexico.

She has been foundering for quite a while... Sorry guys, I missed this thread until just now.
She is young, and likely Insulin Resistant as Arabs often are... she can be helped, and will need time to heal.
I'm not sure she can make it down to us right now, is she at Shawna's? Can you do special feeds and natural trim to correct the hoof angle/coffin bone angle and leave the sole alone?
Is she bailed? and in QT? We are full... and funds are tapped on the ones we have right now.... but if you can stabilize her, we can certainly help... she can do well... most likely, she just needs a chance. and a mom with conviction to only feed her the right stuff... and nothing else.

Give me brand names if you can that will make my shopping easier.. She needs a mom, but until we can find her one, I'll feed her with conviction.

thanks Shawna, I will send an email... it's not 'hard' per se, and will save her. thanks for caring. as soon as she is able to travel, we could take her, but our funds are such that we would need sponsors to railroad her down or pay shipping. I believe she would be much more comfortable in a month and probably able to travel It would also be great if anyone is following and sponsoring her if she could get a pair of SoftRides, or Easyboots with gaitors and a set of comfort pads (from country supply or valley vet) for in those... that will really help her too.... and do you have a Pete Ramey style trimmer near you? a trim will really help, but it does need to be balanced and not invading the sole... only take wall down and give her a heel bevel.

hmmm.. I sent it right after I posted that... let me go check my email for 'waiting to be sent' mail... modified to add: the email gremlin took away all of my hard earned thoughts... written out in a great email.. long, complicated... and of course it was perfect! sigh...
ok, here is the condensed version... DDT: Diagnosis, Diet and Trim, right now, assume diagnosis... no signs of cushing's so go with IR. the diet is ok for any adult horse, so go with tight diet... and trim.
Diet, I'd say the simplest and most fool proof is one of two pelleted complete Low NSC feeds, either the Mid Valley Milling Cushing's/Metabolic Pellet, or the LMF Low Carb Complete or Stage I. The Mid Valley one has a much better profile for minerals, but you have to add them on top... or in some beet pulp which you soak then rinse rinse rinse... or they sink thru and they don't get eaten. You can also wet some pellets, make mush, add minerals, then mix that back in... the LMF has too high of an iron content, but the NSC is good, and it is palatable, and no mineral to mix in, all in there. With either, NOTHING else to eat.... not even a blade of grass, or a weed. Nada. No carrots, no apples, not cookies.... You should add 2 tble of iodized salt per day, 2000 iu of Vit E per day, and 4 tsp of ground cinnamon per day. split that into the two feeds. start slow on the cinnamon, and build up to the full amount. she may like it, may not.
the key is nothing else to eat...
then, trim... try to find a natural trimmer, a traditional farrier doesn't have the training to realign the coffin bone, and allow the wall to realign again... you need to leave the sole totally alone, reduce the toe and give a heel bevel... all to keep the foot plane in the live sole plane... then, if you can get her into Easy Boots with gators, or Softrides, and put in Easy Pads (Valley Vet or Country Supply has them) cut to fit into the boots, you will give her instant relief and support.... trim every 3 weeks right now, to keep her aligned... and hang on... after just a few days you will see improvement... hopefully... sorry I didn't get that email thru the cyberspace... no idea where it 'went'...
When she is stable, we can talk about finding a sponsor to get her down to CA if you need...

I second the natural trimmer. that's the way to go. my trimmer has rehabbed MANY foundered horses. my best friend's foundered Arab went back to being ridden one year after a HORRIBLE founder and he was over 30 years old. she uses the same trimmer I do. :-)

Although, my farrier did wonders for this mare, she is hardly laying down at all, & moves much better than before. I'll take some new pictures of her tomorrow & post them.

what are her chances of being lightly ridden again? My daughter's horse is not doing too well this winter, afraid the rainbow is not too far away, but she has had a great 27 years. Raley is just the size for my little girl. I have a great trimmer, very knowledgeable about everything. I know Kaytlin would just adore her!! I can see Raley in purple already!!

When they have foundered like this, they really should allow the hoof to regrow twice to gain a good laminar attachment before being worked at all, so it would be next winter if she did well all this year.
Great Job Shawna! Bute slows the process, and getting her off of that helped her too! It's a hard thing those first few days, you have to rapidly change diet, do good trim and then strip away the meds, but it pays off, as when they are off the bute, the healing starts faster, as long as the diet and trim are right... but so many folks are 'afraid' to change diet fast or get them off the bute.
You've become a pro! guess we have a new founder rescue home!!! :-)

Yep, and the bute eats their tummy, causing them to look poopy... and slows the healing/blood flow into the hoof... (its a Nitric Oxide inhibitor, and you need NO to promote blood flow) yep, you're on your way to going pro good job

From what I gather, she has been pulled off the lot and is being well taken care of at Shawna's, but is still in need of a home. I'm sure Shawna will give an update when she has time, but it sounds like Raley is doing much better. Someone needs to buy this cute girl and give her that much deserved forever home.

I am pretty sure that Raley will be available on a gift contract..I need to confirm with the lady that paid her adoption fee though. She was trimmed again last week & is a little tender, but she may be tender from all of the walking & trotting around...She is out of QT & I've opened up her run that is attached to the foaling stall..she LOVES the foal that is next to her & spends most of her day following them up & down the fence line.
