BRUNHILDA (Hilda) - 20 year old, 14.3h, bay draft cross. This horse knows what she is supposed to do, but does not always want to do it -- in other words, she's a bit stubborn. She does not respond to the leg, might have been used as a pack horse. Not mean. Cute and energetic. She's got a really pretty movement when she's trotting. She really picks up her feet and it is something to watch her move. She's got a beautiful gait. Unfortunately, we don't have any pics that really do her justice or of her moving like that, but in person...Wow. She's a "must see to appreciate" kind of horse. We were told that she is trained to drive and used to pull a sled.

She's been doing so well at my mom's that we've decided she ought to stay there. No move to Bellingham, then, which means I don't see her often, but she does live in the lap of luxury on Whidbey Island. She's filled out nicely and lost those gaunt feedlot hips. Mom reports that she's incredibly lively and spends a great deal of time frolicking . . . she's got a couple of spunky ponies, a yearling rescue baby, a retired TB mare, and a retired appy rescue mare keeping her company and she's the most playful of the lot! Luckily, the appy mare who hated her has moved to Bellingham and is now busy giving Tanner a run for his money up here . . . out of Brunie's hair! Brunie is living in full retirement now, and learning slowly but surely that people are good for more than just assigning hard labor. She's eating well, her teeth are in great shape for her age, and she's learning about treats. Life is good, and getting better! Thanks again to everyone who came together to save this sweet old Basset Clydesdale . . .

Here are current pics of Brunie, she is at Jim's until he can get her down to Tired Dog Ranch in Westfir Oregon. She was re-rescued off of Whidbey Island.

Tired Dog - are you getting the basset draftie?!!! How exciting. Love that short-legged draft!

When you see Brunie trot across the field, it's like you've been transported to the Shire in the Hobbit. She trots with such purpose.

She looks so wise and knowing. We really cannot wait to meet her. Our Cottage-dweller, Isaac, was so sad before he left for New Zealand as Madame Brunhilda had not yet arrived. He really wants to meet her, as do we all. I think she is so beautiful ...

She really is one of the most enchanting horses, such personality. Jim asid at the Mane Event he was feeling better so she will be on her way, we are hoping Mr. Whiney the pygora goat will hitch that ride as well!!

Beautiful Miss Brunie is going to her new home tomorrow....what an Easter present! Is it a basset hound??? NO it is a horse!! We decided to keep her here in Portland to be Hawkeye's new girlfriend so she will be close by so I can visit her. (since all of us at Jim's are in LOVE with her). This way it will keep a space open at Tired Dog for the next rescue that come along. (thank you for offering to take her!! )

So Brunie is off to her new job tomorrow as offical GF to Hawkeye!

Congrats to Shelley and Erin on their new bundle of joy!

She is so cute, she reminds me of our Mule. Those expressive, soft, been-there-done-that kind of eyes. Good luck Tireddog, I bet she will be fun! ;D

UPDATE:

Jim took Brunie to her new home today with Shelly and Erin in Portland. So Hawkeye has a new GF!! Here is what Jim had to say:

"Ashley -- Got her delivered at about 4:30. It was love at first sight. Hawkeye was running around kicking and bucking he was so happy. Brunie was running (OK-- kind of running) around having a great time. They have a great place !

Hawkeye is absolutly beautiful. I couldn't believe it when Shelly said he was 25 years old.

Shelly and Erin are great people. Brunie and I say ----

THANKS ! ! ! !

"Hi Ashley! Jim brought Brunie over this afternoon ... we all adore her. All of our family was here for Easter and got to watch the new love match ... Hawkeye is absolutely over the moon with pleasure. And Brunie seems happy, too, exploring all over and prancing. She also enthusiastically ate an apple from my hand. By early evening they were munching hay together in the barn. We took pictures -- as soon as I get them on disc I'll send you and Jim a few.

No problem, Brunie is a pleasure to be with and I have never met a horse as endearing as her...not even my own. Jim and I were so happy when Tired dog said they could take her but so sad we wouldn't see her as much, so this worked out great she is only about 20 mins. away so we can see her whenever we want. I know AJ is sad, but best to leave an open spot at her place for a real high risk kid, so she thought it best too. I am happy Hawkeye has a very special easter present!!

Brunie Update from her new home:


Hi Ashley: I just wanted to give you a Brunie/Hawkeye update. It's a love match!!! They both are SO happy with each other. I'm sitting here watching Brunie munch a big 'ole pile of hay Erin just put out in the pasture. It's starting to rain, so Hawkeye has gone into the barn (sometimes he loves it, sometimes he hates it and trots to the barn pronto). I think it's the first time he's left her to her own since Sunday, actually.

You're right, Brunie is soooooo sweet and loving, and seems to be constantly on the move (unless she's eating), exploring every inch of her acre and a half. Hawkeye adores her; until just now, I've never seen him let her out of his sight. When I left for work this morning, he was nuzzling her in front of the barn.

Thank you so much for making not only two horses but two adults so happy. It takes a load off of us to not see Hawkeye alone and lonely anymore.

Lots of love and blessings to you, Ashley. As promised, I will eventually send photos! We have about 5 cameras that need to be developed ... so it might be awhile. But wanted to let you know they are both safe, sound, and happy.

UPDATE from Shelley on Brunie and Hawkeye's LOVE affair:

Everything is going absolutely wonderfully. Those two truly could not be happier. They are constantly licking and nibbling on each other, particularly their backsides, and where you see one, there's the other. We were out there playing with them yesterday and Brunie ate an ENTIRE bag of apples in about two minutes because Erin dropped the bag. She inhales them like no one I've ever seen! Her mouth was all foaming and dripping!!! Hawkeye and Erin played chase, and man, that horse can run -- he loves racing and racing around the pasture, while Erin plays trying to feed him an apple (while running towards him). He thinks that is about as fun as life is. Hawkeye has definitely lost a little bit of weight and looks absolutely gorgeous and healthy. They're both out grazing right now in the sunny pasture.
