TAFFY(Riot on the lot)- 22 yrs old, 16hh+ Belgian/Appaloosa mare. She is a very sweet girl, still very healthy. According to her previous long term owners, and her current foster, Taffy is gentle enough for 8 yrs or above to ride. She is gentle enough to go anywhere or be driven anywhere. She willingly takes the bridle (she grabs the bit in her lips and pulls it into her mouth). She loads and trailers fine, is great with her feet, trims easily. She has had 8 foals, and ended up open this year. Taffy would be a fantastic all-around family horse.

Taffy is 1/2 Belgian and 1/2 Appy. Taffy is gentle enough for 8 yrs or above to ride. She is gentle enough to go anywhere or be driven anywhere. Taffy was born in 1983. She won't bother the fences unless she is hungry. She was just wormed in Sept. No shots this year. She has had at least 8 foals. She wasn't hard for us to catch. I don't know about somebody new. Call her by name and keep going to her face. Never been around goats. She's not been fussy about other animals. Probably wouldn't like a dog chasing her. She will go right in the trailer. Likes to ride backwards. She trims and shoes with no problem. She's been around machinery and didn't mind it. We would lead her behind the tractor and she was fine. We had bred her this year but ended up open. She might try to bluff, but is really a big baby.

Taffy is fine around dogs, too. I have two that are everywhere we go. She doesn't mind them. They don't chase her, though. They just run under legs and things. She's a bit curious about the cats that follow us everywhere too, especially when they rub against her legs . She is not a dominant mare, but will only be pushed so far in a herd.

Taffy is in Lakeview, OR. We are 15 miles from the California border. About an hour and a half east of Klamath Falls.

I also would like to know why she is now available for adoption!!? I am the person who originally applied for and was granted permission to adopt her only to find out she was not being fostered where I was told. It turned out she was not in Eastern Washington but S.E. Oregon! I was made aware of this after I paid $943.00 and was extremely excited about the new addition to our family. I was buzzing with joy. I called all my family all over the US to share the news.
I thought I might pay to have her shipped up here (Vashon Island, WA) even though the cost was nearly the same as her adoption price. I was in love with this girl and was going to do it!
The reason I decided against 'giong that extra mile' for her was ONLY because Sonda(her foster) told me that she had hoped to adopt her anyway. I thought I was leaving her with somebody who wanted her at least as much as I did and would give her a home for the rest of her life, like I was prepared to do.
So, I would REALLY like to know why she is again available? I was broken hearted and she is still searching for a home, both unnecessary. I feel so sad for her, she should've been home here with me.

Gee, why didn't I think of that?? I'll tell you why. When the adoption fell through and the shock of not getting Taffy wore off I found a different horse, of course. A few months later I found a stunning 2,200 pound Belgian mare for sale. She is a dream come true. Why don't I get Taffy anyway? It is not fair to my animal friends to overextend myself. Plus a big chunk of my money these days goes to feeding Delilha. After all I went through I just want to know why Taffy is available again? If I hadn't found Delilha I would be very interested in this new development, but life moved on. I am curious why Sonda(Taffy's foster) never contacted me when things changed.

I hope somebody will give her a home.

I still don't see anybody answering WHY she is up for adoption again...I'm sorry Beth Anne for your angst and concern...but it sounds like you did the right thing for yourself and family (animal and otherwise) by "moving on". I'm sure with all the support this group generates, Taffy will find the proper home.

I'm interested in a calm riding horse, for 'larger' riders...
can anyone tell me how she is? is she forward? does she neck rein? is she stubborn /slow? is she hard mouthed or soft?
and most importantly... does she stand still to mount?? (I have no cartilage left in my knees... )

I have the transportation arranged, Taffy is on her way to Northern CA to be a 'gymkhana' horse... hehe, a TROTTING gymkhana horse!!! and trail horse extroidenaire!! What the heck, if I wanna, a team penner!!! (I'm gonna have to get into better shape for THAT tho!)
OK, now I HAVE got to sell a few of the others... this makes TWO extras I've gotten from here!
Anybody want a 2 year old 'post' PMU colt? or a weanling out of a rescued PMU mare? (born here)... or perhaps a QH with 'issues'... or a great pony... ?
sigh... and I have a few great pasture pets, and a rescue appy leapard stallion too...
but I'm a tough cookie when it comes to finding a 'perfect home'!!!

I am really excited about getting her too!! looks like the pick up will be Wednesday...

Her original thread is gone. From what I remember, Taffy came from the Hermiston, OR auction. A family sold her and another one and the person who bought them turned around and sold them to the feedlot. Her former owners saw her on CBER's website and were heartbroken. The information about her age and her previous foals came from them.

(And this one was my favorite from that group of horses!)

I own Misty (feedlot name Ramble) the other mare that came in with Taffy. Both mares came in together and were with each other for many years. I was in touch for several emails regarding these mares to the previous owners. I will check with them if they want me to give you their email address. Taffy looks really beautiful, and I'm sure she'll make a great Gymkhana horse. Are you serious about homes for your other horses? I'm not looking right now, but will be in a month or two (probably closer to 2-3 months), could you PM with your info?
We're getting a horse property, and will probably continue to board Bert at the farm where he's at now.

Hehe, SHE's HOME!!
Taffy is so cute!!! She is soft and gentle, and has such a kind eye...
she travels very well, and settled in pretty well. SHe is staying the night in my arena... so the others don't come nosing her all night... let the poor girl sleep at least until it is light again!
My stallion thinks she's REALLY pretty... (guess he can see the appy in her! He is a leopard) She sees NOTHING in him
anyway, she's bedded down in the sand arena, with 3 flakes of nice grass hay, a full stock tank, and lots of volunteer grass to graze on in the arena all night!!! less to mow.
I'll get her groomed tomorrow, and take some pics.
She's gotten thin, so we'll keep her looking at grass hay, and pray for sunshine so the herd can go out on the grass... she'll fatten up here... had her teeth done last week, wormed... shots, feet... sheesh, she needs a vacation!

I had the pleasure of Taffy's company for a few hours today. She is a lovely mare, very kind, very willing, very well behaved. Beth is right, she's a very pretty girl.

Beth and her sister were excited and very happy to see Taffy. They had fresh food for her, a big, spacious trailer. When the back was opened, Taffy politely walked up and "hopped" right in. As she buried her nose in her feed bag she kept looking back at us three chatting as if to say "let's move ladies, I need to get to my new home now!"

I hated to see her go but knew when she arrived that it was only for a short time.

Taffy is settling in slowly here, she is kinda nervous and not eating real well...
I wonder if her teeth still hurt from her float last week, as she did eat the grain, but left the hay... it's nice soft grass hay... oh well.
She was a bit agitated upon coming up to the main paddock area today, she went into heat, and squatted for my stallion a few times, so now he is all agitated..
but she is pretty much standing at a gate of her paddock, watching down the hill... looking nervous.
I'll give her a few days... and we'll go out in the pasture to graze a bit tomorrow... let her know we don't do 'bar-be-que' here... horses are friends. and we come with brushes... and carrots, and feed....
I'll keep you all up to date...

Taffy is MUCH better today, went out to the pasture with the 'herd' group, got along great... she liked the grass... and the stud colts.. ! ACK!!!she is in heavy heat, squatting and winking every minute or two.... we'll ride this out before we try riding...
she was more interested in fresh grass than hay, so we are going to let her back in the arena later for a bit more... but she is lively and bright today... horney but bright...
Stallion is all bothered... sigh... and I think Taffy couldn't care less that he's OLD... hehe, just her age!!
going well... I'll get pics later this week so it isn't all about squatting!!!

We rode Taffy today!
She was much calmer today, still in heat, winking at the boys... (I have WAY too many right now!!, 2 two year old colts, and a 2 year old donkey jack... and my 25+ year old stallion rescue!!)
But... we got her out on the grass for a few hours... then took her to the arena...
saddled up... and vrooom!!! (OK... well we walked and trotted... )
she is a bit rusty at 'steering' but got so much better after some sweating...
did some practice for her summer fun too (gymkhana!) we tried poles and barrels... hehe, well, let's just say we did WIDE turns... but she knew what 'going home' was all about!

Oh, found a brand under all the hair too... I'm a bit surprised the brand inspector missed it, it's quite large, left shoulder, 'O' followed by a combined "g" and "L" I think...
I am guessing she was a PMU mare... I'd love to hear more of her history... but appy/Belgium mix is one of the common PMU mixes, and they nearly all brand their mares..
anyone know this brand?

anyway, just wanted to let you all know how well she did, we'll get a stronger bit for next time... the O ring snaffle was kinda light for her.. she neck reins pretty well, but really preferred to go stand at the gate...
Next weekend is a show, the Spring Stampede... any of you locals can come see me trot the patterns in gymkana!!! I think she is gonna be fun!!!

pnp4kidz, I so happy for you and Taffy! She's been one of my favs. Not to mention how great Sundance's foot looks. Drafts are the best! My belgian and I always win barrels at the local draft show's "draftkana". He can really get down in the turns. Supposedly my good friend's barrel horse trainer is dying to see us run barrels. She just doesn't believe its possible that an 18 hand tank can actually do it, and well!

I believe she was a kids horse, not a PMU mare. She went through the Hermiston, OR auction and CBER was contacted by the people who sold her there after they showed up on the CBER website.

I'm just guessing she was a PMU before the last owner got her... I'm going to do some looking for that brand, that might offer some guesses too...
lots of PMU mares were sold then broke to ride. The draft crosses are nice riding horses... and great kids horses... I think the story I heard was that she was the Dad's horse... and had 8 babies... also a PMU thing.. who'd breed a cross bred mare over and over? I dunno....
also not sure why she didn't settle last year... she is certainly horney this week and more than willing to breed with anyone, including my 200 lb mini donkey!!!

In my experience most PMU mares are branded with a number. Possibly also a farm brand but usually with a number too. I'm so happy for you and taffy, she is lovely. People beed these mare cause there is actually a fairly good market for draft crosses, especially coloured ones. Check out www.draftsforsale.com they usually have want ads for coloured draft crosses. I've also seen them on the Dreamhorse want ads. I know just about everybody that comes here asks if I will sell my Clydesdale Quarter horse cross.

She is still VERY fuzzy, but shedding like mad...
our PMU mares had number brands too, but some neighbor's didn't.
Our mare's brands were on the neck, and this mare has lots of neck hair.. so we will see better when she sheds..
Country Heart... what do you know about where they came from?
Just curious of course.. she is a sweetie now... and how is Misty? also faring well?
is she also a Belgium/Appy mix?
Don't tell me about those draft mixes being in demand... my old appy stallion would LOVE to make a nice leapard draft cross baby with her!!! (at least he'd love to TRY!!!)

Hi Beth ~ I remember back in November when Taffy and Misty were first listed on CBER, and the back-story around the young girl whose family owned them, how heart-broken she was to learn they were slaughter-bound.

She's always been one of my favorites, and I'm so pleased that you took her in to your heart and herd!

She is settling in VERY well now! Must be going out of heat now, sigh...
we rode again tonight... got her a tom thumb bit, and she was MUCH better!!
We've given her a few wet saddle blankets so far... hehe, and us a few wet t-shirts!!!
If all goes well the rest of the week, she'll come to Spring Stampede with us on Friday!! YIPEE I get to camp and show with MY horse!!!
oh, I'll let my kids ride her too... if they are nice...

Hey Sonda, do you know what the brand is? I thought she didn't have one.. and can't believe the brand inspector didn't see this one.. it's pretty big and well scarred in there... easy to see, just a bit hard for me to 'interpret'...

I'll get pics of us riding soon... I get too excited and forget the camera... sigh.. old timers...

Oh boy, the more we ride, the bettter she gets! We rode again today, and she is getting very relaxed and happy to take us here and there... she is learning the barrel pattern fast... hehe... so off to the 'races' on Saturday am!!!
my daughter rode tonight and liked her too... so she is gonna have to take two of us thru the patterns saturday!
we also signed up for the $5 team penning fun runs....
does anyone know if drafts know anything about cows???
hehe, we're gonna HAVE to get pics of THAT!!!

Thanks for asking Sonda, I wasn't sure anyone really cared how this old gal did in a fun show... but we had a BLAST!
Taffy did great, she was a little 'herd bound' to her 'buddy of the day' Camelot, my daughter's new QH, he was the vision of calmness, so he 'stuck' to her. She tied to the trailer like a champ, chowed down all of her hay in the first few hours... sigh, and drank a few buckets of water (I'm always worried they won't drink... ) she even kicked over a few buckets of water so she could soak her feet!!(what a brilliant girlie!!)LOL!!! stinker!!!
she just liked to watch me haul her water!

She did all of her patterns, 4 for me, and only 3 for my daughter, she refused to go once for Amy, oh well... she 'got it'! she didn't fight us... and even cantered home!!!

I have some pics, and I asked my sis to put them up on our page and on here... so you can see, and laugh 'with' me!!!
I had a BALL! feels good to get back at it !!!

OK, here are the pics.. I had to go out of town, and didn't get them 'up'...
now, I don't know how to post the pics, but here are the links!!!
These are myself and my 10 year old daughter on her... having a BALL!!! and YES! I made my 'goal' for the show, I beat my friend, Jay, on his PMU gelding Toby!!! (in one event... but heck, they canter!!! I was just trotting mostly!!)
Taffy had fun too... she definately 'got it' and started looking for the 'next pole'... hehe...
watch out later in the year.. when we have our SEA LEGS!!!

Oh boy, Miss Taffy is gonna be a great Gymkhana horse!
She hoppped in the trailer and went with us all day yesterday, let 3 of us ride all 4 rating events... we were all pooped!! Especially Taffy!!!
but, all did well... whew!!!
I got some great shots (my sis Peg was the official photographer!), got one of us 'running' home, and 3 feet are off the ground!!! yahoo!!!
I'll get them on our website shortly and links put on here... heck, I might try getting the pic to show up!

anyway, we're sore, sunburned, and had a BLAST!!!
Taffy is awsome...
sum of yus-guys missed a great one.... hehe...
oops, I mean, .... sorry...
Oh, my farrier did her Saturday too... and she LOVED her..
she at first said she'd cost more, since she's a draft... then on foot #2,
she said, "ya know, I'm gonna take that back... she is SO good, she is regular price."
she IS so good. she might kinda try to be silly, but with a small reprimand, she is back to 'oh well... I'll just stand here then..."

Thanks everyone,
we ARE having a ton of fun!
I 'think' we are going to get into a rated 'division' (in our association you are put into a division according to how fast you and your horse typically race, so the really fast folks are not racing against the walk/trotters, or even the slower horses. A horse/rider combo are rated, so a horse can be in two divisions, a higher one with older sis, and a low one with baby sis... )
Taffy and I hope to make Division 7. That is the slowest one... hehe... maybe we'll win a ribbon!!! We are off to Ceres CA this weekend, for a sleepaway show, Friday to Sunday!!! it is fun because you only have to run 4 of the races on Sat, and 2 on sunday instead of all 6 in one day, and you get to BBQ that night! Wish us good luck in our first 'rated' show!!!
hehe... and we have to do our first 'Hurry Scurry" which is the race with JUMPS!!! hehe.... I'll have MY helmet on!!

Woo Hoo! Taffy and I took 12th overall at our show this weekend, in Division 7! She went over the jumps in Hurry Scurry... and didn't bat an eye!!!
My daughter took a 7th on her in Hurry Scurry in Open Junior division too!!!

(Ok, so there were only 13 rider/horse pairs in Division 7, but I DID take a 6th in one and a 7th place in another!, oh, and we walked over the jumps, but heck, she went OVER them!!!hehe, we had a ton of fun!)

and just to brag, my daughter also took 4th overall in division 7 on her 35 year old+ wonder pony... she's too big for him, but they sure love each other, and he might have no teeth, but he runs like the wind for her! 4th overall, and all the others were all horses!!! he's an 11 hand pony!

Miss Taffy (Taff-ola) is bonding BIG time with my 10 year old! the trainer is thrilled !
she even got a canter yesterday... that is a BIG improvement for my timid rider... she has needed confidence, and Taff is giving it in huge doses... she giggled all the way down the arena cantering... awsome!!!
Poor Taffy cut her hock on sumthin last week, so she is living with Hobbs/Sundance... they are in love.. Momma with her new Babe. sigh. so, she can stay in with him I guess!!!
Cut is all healed of course... but she doesn't wanna go back out...
she got a bee sting on her eye lid yesterday, I was pretty worried, but put eye antibiotics in it, and this am the swelling is all gone... she is 'stuffed' into a fly mask now... tis the season, and the flies are HORRIBLE here this year! AFter paying $80 a month for fly preditors, I'd have hoped they would help more, this is our 3rd year with them, and I heard they got BETTER... but I think we are gonna bail on them, and go feed thru...

Taffy gets this weekend off... no show... back to the shows next weekend!!! She is doing great there, cantering most of the patterns now, and seems to at least understand what we're doing now!!! hehe, and I'm havin' a blast!!!

oH, alllllll riiiiight!!!
hehe, if I HAVE to!!!

of course we are in Missouri right now.... took a nice trail ride in the woods of Potosi MO today, on a rental horse named Rusty... all the horses were nicely shod, and, ahem... FAT!!
they go out on 550 acres at night, and in for rides two or three times a day, either the 1 or the 2 miles ride... not a bad life I'd guess! They obviously are well cared for and very happy... adn we had a blast!!!
When we get home next week, I'll get more pics of Taffy.. my gal...
oh, and some of Sundance and Jet too...
and..... ta da da daaaaaa.... ACORN!!!

Hi Y'all!
Taffy is doing GREAT!!!
She and I plus my daughter Amy showed this weekend, and
drum roll please.......
I took 2 5th's!!! and a 9th,
and my daughter took an 8th and a 9th!!!
(her 8th beat my 9th!)
hehe, oh yeah, we are havin' fun!!!
I think Taffy finally 'has' it, she is running the patterns great, and cantering when we can... even with Amy!
I'll get Peg to post pics of us, and get a link to here,
she is so much fun....
oh, and we did her feet again this weekend, wow! she has AWSOME feet!
(barefoot of course) and rock hard, polished soles, frogs like leather, and self trimming with small chips... she just needed a mustang roll and off she went! gravel crunching sound!!!

I got her a string of rhythm beads, they came yesterday, can't wait for this weekend's show, we will "jingle" all the way home!!!

I got SO caught up in talking about my beloved Taffy, I forgot to add that my other daughter took high point on her 35+ year old 'super pony'!!! She took 5 1st's and 2 2nds!!! Not too bad, in a class of 13 who are all full sized horses! Taffy is in that division with my daughter and I too, the reserve High Point was taken by a big TB and a teenaged boy.... I'm quite proud of my daughter and her pony! They just run like the wind... just for the joy of running. She still never kicks him, although she did admit she 'squeezed a tiny bit' over the jumps in hurry scurry this weekend... hehe, I 'think' that worked well for her!!!

Nope, that is her horse (who is about 14.3 h by the way!!!) Taffy dwarfs him!
The pony is small...... I'll post a pic... today at the show the pony would have had hi-point again but he DQd the last event... oh well... anyway, I rode along side him once, my foot goes over his back, and I kicked my daughter!!! hehe
Taf took a 7th and an 8th today. we had fun, but it was HOT!!!

Miss Taffy looks marvelous! This is one of those stories that makes you cry happy tears!

At her age, with a hopefully minor knee thingie, this girl is doing beautifully. I am very happy for you. More potential adopters of older horses need to know how successful they can be!

Yeah, you can see the knee thingy in that pic... we don't push her hard, but she just goes! It doesn't seem to make her limp, but it does seem to be sore when she bends too far, like for the farrier or hoof picking... so we hold it low.
The vet is officially seeing her on Tuesday, but she said it is most likely a hygroma, which is benign, and needs no treatment.
we are the talk of every show, and we get to talk a LOT about CBER due to her.
The pony is an American Shetland. He is aged at 'over 35' by the dentist and 2 vets. He has to eat all pelleted hay now (Sterret Brothers Hay and feed Cushing's pellets) due to his teeth, he is healthy as all get out, and runs literally for the love of it. My daughter doesn't kick and hardly has to steer... he just runs his heart out for her...
he is a gem. they don't make those kind much.

Kknow what you mean about these older ponies. Cherokee is doing really well. Will need to go to UC Davis for eye surgery -- sarcoma in right eye that is growing and will make her very uncomfortable. Cherokee and Pumpkin spent a day a leanline rides at the Lighthouse for the Blind summer camp. It is truly amazing how these ponies step and do all the right things for us.

sigh, vet had to 'switch' and see a rescue 35+ yr old mini, Apricot, who is in an ERU flare...
so didn't see Taffy. Next time... she reassured us that it was no likely to need any treatment tho...

Hey, bet cha'll didn't know Taffy was a Western Ranch horse, now didy'a???
hehe, well at least this Saturday she was!!! We went in a Western/English show, and took 2nd in Western Ranch horse and in Western Equitation!
She also won my daughter the 10 and under High point!!! hehe!!!
not too shabby for a throw away steak horse... !!!
and I think we all had fun too... even tho it was 114 at 4 pm when the show got over and we started for home... pant, pant, pant...
we are finally recovering from the heat...
old Taffy drank a Muck Bucket of water 2 times!!!
but she 'done good'...

Hi all,
Taffy update!!!
Well, this weekend there was no horse show
but that means we got to do housework!!! YIPEE!! NOT>....
but we did get in a ride... and Taffy was a blast!
we got her to jump the cross rails... and she seemed to get a blast out of making my daughter giggle... she'd even jump after the rail fell, she hopped over, cantered to the next one, and hopped right over that!!! what do you know... Taffy is a Hunter afterall!
We just played around... no biggie, but we did have fun. That is what matters.
OH! and my daughter took off running on her pony, and I goosed Taffy, and she took off running after him!!! the pony smoked us.. but it sure was a blast to feel her kick in the afterburners! she can haul that big a$$!!! (and mine too!!!)
so, one weekend she's a lovely English and Western Pleasure/Ranch Horse Mount, and the next she is a Hunter and racing pony... !!! multi-purpose extrordenaire!!!

Next weekend is another gymkhana... I'm gettting addicted to these ribbons!!!
Lost my camera this last weekend, I am SO bummed... took some great pics of the English/Western class with my daughter Amy... If I find it, I'll upload!

Vet here today, did xrays of Taffy's left front knee... will hear tonight what it is... but she deemed her fine for riding... so long as I don't do cutting or calf roping!!! ha!
OOOOOKAY! I 'think' we can hold to those restrictions!!!
Hehe... Gymkhana this weekend... had to reassure her that meant a nice slow canter to the barrel, trot 'round, hope to go the right way to the next barrel... and do it again.
then change riders and do that all at the trot with my daughter... !! not a bad life.
she agreed.
oh, and the fat part on her neck/throat... is... a fat neck by her throat....

OK, got the call from the vet last night,
it's not good news for Taffy's knee...
it IS a bone chip, and since it's been there so long it has now formed a huge fibrous ball that extends into the joint and the radial carpal joint is full of arthritic changes already...
nothing can be done now, so we are instructed to just keep her to light riding, and she will 'last for years'.
Well, let's see, my daughter does trot gymkhana, and I do a canter here and there, I hope that qualifies.... so far she doesn't limp when we ride.... and I'd like to keep her like that!
any suggestions???

Yeee Hawwww, Taffy is a Redneck Haws...
hehe, our juniors at our club put on the Redneck Olympics this last weekend, and Taffy did great! She did the redneck horseshoes (run to the end, throw a toilet seat over a cone, run back), the koolaide spitting contest! (she was the BEST at going right up to the paper target, which was flapping in the strong winds... while her 'kid' spit red koolaid in the middle... )
let's see... flag race, (where they had to run to each of 3 barrels, circle and pick up the flag) and a few more I just can't remember!!! oh, then we had a whipped cream fight... but THAT is a whole nuther story!!! hehe...




uh, you BET we ran her WITH that hat on!!! LOL!!! Hey, I think she liked it! she never shook it off all day!!!
the pony on the other hand........... well, at least he took 'Queen' Redneck!!!

Ok, here are some pics of us at the Trophy Show last weekend...
everyone who comes, and participates in at least 5 classes gets a great trophy!
I also got a 5th place (out of 15 entries) in Hurry Scurry, that mare can jump!!! doesn't blink an eye... even if she just knocks it down... hehe...



We had a ton of fun!
now, can't wait to have a horse for EACH of us to ride!!! COME ON DOWN MARLEY!!!
we have another show on Saturday, the last 'official' show before State... one more time to get our fastest times!!!
only the top 5 in each division get to 'go'... fingers crossed!!! I WANNA GO!!!
it's in Santa Rosa This year.... 4 nights of sleep over...
the kids love it, they get to miss school!

I am so glad I came here to see the Taffy updates. I want you to know that I cry and laugh all happy everytime I see you all having so much fun. Taffy is such an incredible horse and you and your girls do so many wonderful things for her!

we did team penning last night, and well, Taff did oky doky, didn't really LIKE those cows... and the horns scared her...
but we did it and had fun... hehe,
my daughter's pony did AWSOME
he was smaller than the cows... hehe, but he ran right in, picked out his calf and ran like the richardens to push it into the pen!!!
Jen actually won the "run with the Queen" Bucket (our region Queen rode with her, they were the only ride with the Queen participants who penned a cow!!!)

I took my daughter out on a cattle drive with her little black shetland pony...he thought he was an awesome cow horse, the cows seemed to think he was just a funny looking cow! They would actually walk up to him from the herd to check him out. Apparently he wasn't as intimidating as he thought he was.

LOL! that is just how they looked at Poncho!

here is a pic of Taffola and her chest swelling... last night... with her winter fur, and how huge she is, it is hard to appreciate the actual size of this thing, but it is huge...



and here is one from the penning... hope you can see her...


and one of the pony, behind that calf!!! this was her run with the Queen when she won the bucket of 'goodies'! she is still beaming about that one...

Yikes, that IS big. Does she have any systemic symptoms? In the 80's I had a gelding with Pigeon fever, but it was just the swelling, none of the other symptoms people are talking about. Vet lanced it, and it cleared up. Jingles for your girl.

That looks just like what my Jett had earlier this year. Personally, I'd lance it on the bottom so you can control "catching" the pus rather than waiting for it to burst. He was all better in about five days after that. Be sure to buy lots of bleach!

My initial reaction is pigeon fever. It seems to be everywhere at the moment. I have a mare with it right now and her chest is huge also. I have a gelding just getting over it and he had his whole belly full of edema, not to mention his parts looked like softballs. My vet has indicated that the swelling with this disease is quite painful. By the way they act, I'm certain that it is!

We got pus 5 days ago now, and she is SO much better... we are just going to call it pigeon fever... how's that?

she is feeling fine, and the vet said she can go back out now.... then, clean her paddock and we can forget the whole thing... whew.
I feel blessed that it didn't affect her anywhere else... just her chest, it opened, drained well by itself, then the swelling resolved on its own, and the hole is healing up. she has a naked patch, but that too will fuzz over soon I bet...

Glad she's doing better. It is scarier to hear about than to actually go through. Hopefully she's the only one that will get it. Fortunately, the bugs (flies and mosquitoes) are all starting to go away (at least they are here). Good luck with all the rest.

Taffy is all better now... back out in the pasture... and growing hair over her big 'hole'.
sigh, one more little glitch in life past...
good news is... she can take me on the 'Turkey Trot' after thanksgiving trail ride now!!!

I ended up with two more cases of pigeon fever (3 total) and two cases of full blown strangles. Then I went to pick up one of my draft mares from driving training and she was lame the day I got there. Got home and she developed an abcess. Not a terrific last two months, but I'm hoping it can only get better from here!!

Oh Boy Sondland! You've had a sucky fall!
I ended up with 3-4 with abcesses, probably PF, but only two 'bad' ones.
I had Marley with strangles too...
and foot abcesses... well with founder rehab, those are a common thing here.. we had a few this month...
hope your winter goes better! at least the cold will soon kill off all the nasty germs and flies!

All is well, and winter is rest for Taffy...
all Pigeon Fever gone, and we'll be getting ready for Spring Stampede in a few weeks!!!

Hi all...
Taffy is doing great! My sister Peg is riding her this year, as is my daughter, Amy.
She is a little more ouchie on her broken/chipped knee this year tho, so we have to bute her for show days...
but, she loves to go, and loves to be ridden, so off we go!!!
She is SUCH a super horse... just perfect for anyone who wants to get out there and not worry!
I'll post some pics again soon, they are on my computer at home which won't email well... grrrr... it has a glitch...
and THIS one at work won't go to photobucket!

but... we are having a blast... :-) and Taffy is doing well!
