KATEY - 20+ year old, 14.3h, chestnut Quarter Horse pony mare. She is sweet, easy to handle, and fun to ride.
Update: Katey has had training, it is old training but done well. She is impatient and a little pushy in cross ties, She has some wonderful ground work. Under saddle she chews the bit a lot and tosses her head. She has a lot of spirit for an old lady (like an Arab). She knows how to neck rein and is light on the bit. She leg yields and is very responsive. She can be very resistant at times when pushing her into a trot (throws her head) and likes to get her own way. We did not push her too hard as it was her first ride, we more or less coaxed her along and blocked her way when she started to be naughty. She ALWAYS came back to the rider though. My trainer's recommendation is that she will be a really terrific mount with a 60-90 day refresher. She is very affectionate and really wants to bond with someone. She is VERY pretty in a saddle and bridle and we think she could be a show stopper! If someone is looking for a good spirited mount, she is definitely the girl!

I thought I would give a short update on Katey girl. She has settled in nicely and really tries to please. She knows a lot, lunging, neck reining, direct rein, etc. I would have to say she just needs a gentle rider as she is defensive in anything stronger than a snaffle. She needs lots of caboose work as this seems to be her worst area (massive chest, little caboose) She really likes the lovies though and she is a tester for space issues. She just wants to be in your pocket. We went out to give the kids treats on Christmas day and found out she loves apples and peppermint candy canes. Folks, she is a keeper. She has a lot of forward and it really doesn't take much unless you want the canter (that caboose problem) but she does collect and has really pretty movement. She gets along well with geldings in the pasture but I think she will try to be alpha with other mares. She really is a terrific lady! I still haven't done the preg check yet. Will update when I have the results of that.

Ok we finally got some pics but a few are dark.
She is a terrific Girl! She has still shown no signs of being blind in any way shape or form, the vet said she is a little limited because of her age and cataracts.
We had fun today as Rodeo51 came out and rode her (as well as my trainer Carolyn) They used a hackamore, cool huh! She was good as gold, most of the time. We didn't lunge her first so she was really fresh this morning. Anyway here they are: the first one I title Feisty Girl!

I know Orchard mix hay but am not sure of the grain as my barn manager gets it. She really swears by it as it is a generic brand but it is made from the remaining grains used in Human food. She adds a little bit of vitamins to it. It is funny because I see Katey and don't see that much weight yet. But this little girl is a Powerhouse! She would have no trouble carrying my 270lb husband around and not break a sweat. Very forward mare who likes to GO! I think she would be great on trails!

I have to agree with Linda...Katey is a powerhouse, and has quite the personality. Yesterday I was out at the barn getting Katey saddled up and Jana was there talking to people about Tahoe. Well Katey thought all those people should be giving her attention instead of checking out Tahoe. She was quite put out and kept wanting to moving over to say hi. The only thing stopping her were the cross ties. Tahoes stall is right next to the cross ties. She finally settled down and we got some riding in. She is a fun little mare and would make someone a great trail horse.

I think that she has probably been mainly trail ridden. She is getting her basics tuned up and doing really well. I am going to let Rodeo51 to expand as she is doing all the riding on Katey. Katey is doing just fine. At times she tries to test your space, but were working on that... ;-)
Today Tinkersladys trainer suggested that we try using a martingale on her so she would quit throwing her head and collect herself better. She did fairly good and I want to continue using it. The best part is she is finally starting to gain some muscle in her butt with all this work. I will be very happy when all this rain quits so we can go outside of the arena. I am starting to get webbed feet sloshing through the mud...LOL

Please do not use a tie down on this mare, the martingale is much better, so she can learn to use self carriage rather than bracing against a tiedown! Neck muscles will have stiffness and "brace" if a tie-down is used and you want her to soften and yield and build her correct topline.

Have you had a chance to float her teeth? At that age, I'd suspect sharp teeth as a reason for head-throwing. Sometimes they get so used to their mouth hurting that they keep up the head-throwing even after the floating...takes them a while to realize the bit doesn't hurt anymore.
She looks beyond amazing - like a different horse from her feedlot photo. She doesn't look senior at ALL.

Try this, press your hands on the side of her cheeks where her back teeth are. If she throws her head then she might have a sharp tooth. They will throw there head in a hackamore too. Any kind of pressure will hurt if she has bad teeth. If it's not the teeth it's a training proble. You could try turing her in a curicel every time she throws her head up. When doing this, keep turing her untill she gives to pressure and dropes her head or stops and gives to the rain. Also called one rain stop. You can stop just about any bad behaivor with a one rain stop. It's call redirecting there atention to some thing other then what you where doing. If you have sattilight tv then you get RFD TV. They have two hours of horse training shows a day. Direct TV it's chanle 379 and Dish I think it is in the 900's. Direct TV horse shows start at 1:00 pm and agin at 4:00 pm
