HAGAR - 11 y/o - 15.2h - Chestnut QH Gelding
Post by foxie on Apr 24, 2006, 4:54pm
HAGAR - Approx. 11 yrs old, 15.2hh, Chestnut QH type gelding. Automatically picks all feet up for you, and his feet look pretty good. He leads and backs easily and lightly. Although his weight is pretty good, he may need a little dental work. He stopped, backed and turned when ridden in just the rope halter. He did appear to try to listen to what you wanted. He was nervous getting separated from Helga, whom he came in with. All in all, nice boy. For Adoption Only.

You found the perfectly good guy. He's like a puppy. I see him when I go out to visit my boy, Duke at Hytyme's.
Last night, when I was working with leading and backing with Duke, Hagar saw that Duke got an apple slice whenever we stopped, so he followed along and stopped . He'd trot right behind Duke and then sneak up to my left side to get his slice. This went on for about 5 minutes, and then Duke finally had enough of this and chased him off. Hagar looked a little blue.
So, I got out my brush and Hagar let me brush him for about 20 minutes. He has a lot of dirt/dandruff on him, and I found a woodtick too. Not sure if he likes to roll, or if it's just been a while since he was last groomed. He likes to be groomed, but got a bit antsy. He kept getting in my face for apples, so I held out an apple slice straight out to the side, and he started at my armpit and nosed all the way down to the apple slice! He kept doing that, whenever I held out an apple that way. It was hilarious.
When is he shipping down to you?

He didn't like Lakota, so off we went:
1. Arrow
2. Deja Vue (cuz he looks like my first horse)
3. Aragon
I know I will know exactly what to name him once I meet him, but in the meantime, the thinking caps are on.
Any input is greatly apreciated.... maybe you guys have some cool horsey names

Thanks to Hytyme for taking such great care of him, and to Lori for bringing him home save.

Little update on Hagar. SO said he went out yesterday, and brushed him for quite a while, and when he stopped, Hagar would push him, like hey, you're not done yet, and when he tried to walk away, he kept following.
Apparently he doesn't like the grain. He nibbles around, and eats the carrots, but leaves all the grain....... he does nicker for his hay though. SO said he is very sweet, loves hugs, and attention.
I so can't wait to meet him!!!!

Hagar has a new name, it's ARROW. He is already responding to it. Got to spend some time with him. He is just a sweetheart, and a talker. He nickered at me yesterday when I was taking care of Gem. He definitely loves Gem, and watches over him. He loves to follow us around, and always needs to know what is going on.
Gave him a good brush yesterday, and he loves that. He's not too sure of the fly spray bottle, but tolerated it.
I noticed that he had some old cuts on the back of his front legs, down by the hoofs, wonder if he got caught up in some barbwire. They don't seem to bother him at all.
He is funny when it comes to his food. I made him a nice fruit salad yesterday, and mixed it in with his grain. Put the bucket in front of him, and next thing I know, fruit and grain is flying all over the place. He doesn't beleive in eating out of a bucket. He's a manly horse, and eats straight from the ground. Every time I put the fruit and carrots back in the bucket, he gave it a big shove, and dumped it all again. So he won this one.....
I will put him in the round pen this weekend, and see where we are, he seems to have a lovely trott. He does need to put some weight on, his butt and back are pretty boney.
He also does not beleive in Fly Masks, I don't know how many times we have been searching for that darn thing in the pasture, put it on him, just to go out and look for it again a couple hours later.
He has adjusted really well, and is a wonderful guy. Loves attention, scratches, carrots, and if he was a dog, he'd crawl in your lap, I'm sure.
I'll get some pictures of him this weekend, and hopefully will be successful in posting them.

well, we took lots of pictures today, but since my digital camera croaked, I have to wait until that film is ready to post the pictures.
Arrow got a good brushing today, and we treated his dry skin around his mane a bit. Looks like he did have a bridle path at one time.
We've noticed, that he doesn't like to have his mouth touched that much. We tried to check how bad his teeth were, and he kept pulling his head away.
So I thought I'll see how he'd react to bridling. Got one of Gems bridles, and he opened that mouth right up, and accepted the bit. Well, then I got brave, and thought I'll try to get on him and see how he reacts to that. Except for it being dinner time and he wanted food, he really couldn't have cared less.
I will have to practice my western riding skills. Tried to do the one reign turn, well he turned his head and looked at me, but couldn't quite figure out what I wanted, well, then I thought I'll try that neck reigning thing that everybody is talking about, almost fell off cuz he went into a little spin. He is very responsive to weight and leg cues.
I walked out into the field a little bit, and turned around he moved into a nice little trott, what a comfortable gate he has. He was such a good boy, and he'll be fun to ride once we find him a saddle that fits. Unfortunately I can't use Gem's, it is way to huge for Arrow, Gem was a big bulldog Quarterhorse with a wide back. So I have to sell his gorgeous, comfortable saddle. Really bummed about that.
We only worked him for a little bit. Didn't want to ride him to much, he needs to get his feet done first, still trying to get my farrier out.
He is one big hunk of love though. It was nice to get my mind off Gem today. I'm looking forward to working more with Arrow, he makes it very easy, I have a feeling I'll be learning a lot from him.
Thank you to whomever dumped him, you gave me a precious gift, and another chance of giving a wonderful horse a chance at a spoiled life.

Ohh, I finally have time for Arrow, and he soaks it all up. He looooooves to be brushed, so every night we do that brushing thing before dinner.
I feed my horses in the barn, so they all get what they need (got a pleasantly plumb gelding here), both my arabs, know the drill, as soon as I open the barn door, they go right to their stalls. The first night we had to walk Arrow in the stall, the second night, he walked in the barn and looked around, not quite sure where to go from here. Last night, he was right up there, and walked into his new stall and went right for the feeder. He definitely is a smart cookie when it comes to food.....
I found my old digital camera (crappy thingy) and tried to take a few pictures of him yesterday. It's really hard to do when his fuzzy nose keeps getting right in your face..... He is so curious about everything, and wants to be right there with you, he kept following me. My farrier is coming out today, so he's getting his first set of a pedicure. I will hopefully be able to work him a bit more over the weekend.
Here are a few fuzzy pictures, now remember, these are taken while running away from a can-I-crawl-in-your-lap-horse...... I didn't think you'd apreciate just the fuzzy nose hair shots.......
he wouldn't get his face out of the feeder. He has discovered that grain is good.......

Thanks, but I can't take all the credit, he was at Hytymes, and they took excellent care of him and earlybp did the groundwork brushing thing.
After he got here, S/O was busy brushing, I've only done it for a week now. But he's had plenty of people loving on him.
Everybody who's met him, has absolutely fallen in love with him.
My neighbours girl came over with her friend, and they were just hanging on him, loving him, petting him, giving him scratches and kisses. He was in heaven. My goats stand under him for shade, he doesn't care. My friend shook out a tarp, not knowing he was standing right behind her, he didn't even flinch.
He's also decided that the fly mask is his friend, and has not tried to pull it off at the far end of the pasture.
I can tell that he does like the barn in doses, yesterday, after I let everybody back out after feeding, he kept walking into his stall, looking outside, as if he was thinking, "yeah, this is good".
He was running around with the arabs in the pasture the other day, they come in for food, he's right behind them.
Last night after dark, I stood on my patio looking over the pasture, he must have seen me, cuz he nickered at me, and came walking up to the fence. So we got a late night snack of baby carrots (funny watching him eat baby carrots) and an apple, which he had to share, but he didn't seem to mind, although he had to sniff me up and down to make sure I wasn't hiding any apples anywhere before he would let me pass.
He is quite a character!
*modified, cuz I can't spell today *

Arrow got his feet done yesterday, and he was such a good boy (of course). I'm starting to not expect anything less than that from him. He amazes me all the time how nothing seems to bother him.
Although he did give out a little snort, when he couldn't see his friends for a second. Was about as hyper as I've seen him.
His front feet were worse off than his back. Still not bad, but they seem to turn inside just a bit. He is getting natural hoof trim, so she'll be back out in 2 weeks for a follow up trim, and we're hoping to correct that over the summer.
He now has very pretty toes, and already seems to walk much freer (that is a word, right?).

Re: HAGAR - 11 y/o - 15.2h - Chestnut QH Gelding
Post by swissgrl on Jun 26, 2006, 6:21am
Wow, I feel like a proud new mom. I just want to share everything that Arrow does. He is such a wonderful boy. He has discovered which stall in the barn is his, and come feeding time, he marches right for it, sticks his head in the feeder, and has the "do not disturb" attitude.
I was going to work him Saturday morning before it got to hot, but when I woke up we had Thunderstorms and lightening, so didn't think that was a good idea. I put them all up in their stalls and fed them. Temperature changed about 20 degrees within 45 minutes, and I'm sorry, but I'm a wimp when it comes to scorching heat. So he got off easy.
Sunday we did go for a little walk. I took him down the street to the mailbox to get the mail. The horses across the street were talking, so of course he had to answer. The cows were running around, so we had to stop, and check that all out. Arrow has a nice long walk, and again, couldn't have cared less what was going on, he was interested, but did not seem to be bothered by anything, except that I would not let him eat the dry weeds on the side of the road.
I tried to put him in the round pen and free lounge him. Okay, so we have to work on that, he was cutting corners, stopped by the gate, and generally just did not want to be in there.
I made him give me 3 good rounds on either side, he listens really well to the woah,
We did work on some leading and pressure excercises, and he did really well on that.
He is just such a great horse, just love that boy!

1. Arrow
2. Deja Vue (cuz he looks like my first horse)
3. Aragon
I know I will know exactly what to name him once I meet him, but in the meantime, the thinking caps are on.
Any input is greatly apreciated.... maybe you guys have some cool horsey names

Hi, I met Hagar tonight! He was traveling with Kara down to CA. Lori said he was the most well behaved guy! I had the pleasure of filling his water bucket:) He's very nice and very sweet. I wish him lots of luck in his new home!!!

Hagar is a one-in-a-million horse, and one of the sweetest CBER horses we have ever had here. It is not surprising either that he was the most well behaved horse on the trip south to his new home. That is just the way he is. We sure will miss him.....

Hagar is finally home. He has adjusted well, and my grey arab gelding "adopted" him. He apparently hasn't left Hagars site since he arrived. I haven't had the honor of meeting Hagar yet, but SO said he was very sweet, and he's already in love with him.
Thanks to Hytyme for taking such great care of him, and to Lori for bringing him home save.

Just tell him when you get there that you were out earning money to pay his bills! I tell my horses and cats that all the time. He sounds like a really sweet boy who impressed everybody he came into contact with.

LOL, I know, but they don't seem to care about that. My arab gets quite standoffish sometimes when I've been on a business trip.....
He's a total momma's boy!

Swissgrl--
I can't wait to hear what you think of him. He's got one of the best horse personalities I've ever met. I gave him a few cookies before he left, and told him all about Gem Dandy.
