Tabby- 6 y/o - 15.3hh - Chestnut TB Mare
Post by calypso on Oct 23, 2006, 1:54pm
Thin Dun TB mare, approximately 15.3 hands, tattooed and papered 15 yr old mare. Really a nice girl to handle and easy to halter and lead and pick up feet, led at the trot when encouraged. Needs some good feed and nutrition, probably some dental work and care to get back in good condition, but moves sound around the lot at this time. Will be attractive girl when in shape!

Per Heidi - Tabby is tattooed and papered and is definitely a TB! She may be registered as a chestnut, but currently the lot owner calls her dun and we must co-ordinate with his info for tracking purposes. Some unusual colors do show up once in a while in the TB world, including rare crop-outs and palominos.

Re: Tabby - Just Arrived

I posted this on the other thread but she is indeed a chestnut. After she leaves the lot her papers should say chestnut that so nobody gets held up at the state line trying to import a "dun" mare! There are no dun TBs.

Crop Out is a term used when app or pinto patterns popped out unexpectedly from AQHA or TB (no App there though) parents. They though the pattern had come out of nowhere but in fact the parents were carrying (whatever) pattern in minimal forms and when matched they happened to have the genetic material combined in the right away to express it in a more obvious form. All the overo patterns exist in the AQHA gene pool and the TB is full of sabino, has some frame and possibly (in very minimal form splash). Arabs have a similar distribution to TBs. If you know what to look for you can easily trace the patterns pack if you have pictures (and the pedigree is accurate). But there is no dun in TBs and dun requires one of the parents to be dun. You are dun or not dun, just like you are palomino/buckskin/smoky black or you aren't. There are varying shades depending on the horses base coat, time in the sun, health, etc. but there is no hiding them.
Except for some sooty buckskins and palominos that are SO dark they appear to be bays/browns or chestnuts. But if tested they will show up as nCr (no doubting a double dilute).

Equinelongears....
I asked about striping because there was a discussion early on about what her TRUE color was....she is registered as a Thoroughbred, but described as a "dun", which is not a true thoroughbred color.
It was simply a discussion we were having, and is in NO WAY important to the adoptability of this horse. I am a little offended that you would say such a thing.

Tabby is sick on the lot right now. The vet has seen her and she's been started on antibiotics. They're trying to get her off the lot and somewhere quiet where she can be QT and get better.
I'd really appreciate Jingles and prayers for this sweet girl! She looks like she's been through a lot and has still kept her sweet spirit about her.
Thanks!

Thanks!

ps, I need to have Foxie ban my IP address from the "horse on the lot" threads!!
