Yosemite -12-13 yr.old - 16.1hh - Bay TB Gelding
Post by cybercat on Nov 22, 2006, 9:47pm
12-13 year old 16.1h TB bay gelding. Very friendly and easy to approach and catch. He does have a tattoo from racing. This horse does have some urinary tract problems which are noticeable by our photos and he was urinating very frequently. Yosemite is shod all around and easy to ride if you know how to ride. He has a gentle eye and followed the rider around after we assessed him. This gentle guy wants to be rescued and deserves a loving home.

I wonder if his problem could be as simple as having a bean stuck in there?

That's what I'm thinking...he may be partially blocked with a bean, or a bladder stone. Hope someone's keeping an eye on him to make sure he doesn't get completely blocked Wish I could see what his urine stream comes out like.

Sounds like symptoms of either a bladder or kidney stone, which is probably why the poor guy ended up at auction. There is probably blood in the urine also, if a sample were sent to a lab. Usually, there is alot of irritation and discomfort with stones, and the animal will feel like he has to urinate frequently.
Just went through it this fall with my dog...he ended up completely blocked.
Like I said, I hope someone's noticing if this horse can still pee or not, in the days to come.

Hi
I just posted on the main board - I have an account at Mapleway and at Animal Medical so I can be the point person/funnel for funds and information.
I sent an email to Sam to get it set up. I've done this before and happy to do it again. As soon as I have it, I'll post a quote for having an exam and urinalysis and culture which would be the place to start. (Even if he's partially blocked, and it can be cleared he may be cooking an infection as well, hence the UA and culture)
I agree, blocking at FP would be a death worse than slaughter - excrutiating and slow. Let's try to save him that!

Re: Yosemite - POSSIBLE PENDING!
Post by calypso on Nov 27, 2006, 8:23am
Okay, here is the current news.
Until beejoyful gets confirmation we need to assume this guy is still at risk. (sorry to be a downer, but we've found out the hard way that until they are off the lot...) I know there have been other inquiries about him as well, but concern remains about his medical condition.
I called Mapleway this morning and the roads are frozen so Michelle (vet) isn't going out on farm calls for a couple of days. I'll also check with Animal Medical...
Probable costs for diagnosis are in the $150-225 range including farm call, mileage charges, exam, urinalysis, culture (if necessary), and ultrasound (if necessary). Treatment costs will depend on what the diagnosis is. DON'T send money yet. We need an actual confirmed appointment first.
Jingle for all the horses there - it's really, really cold at night.
I"ll keep you posted.

Just got off the phone with the Dr. from AMS. He's arriving at the lot as I type and Sam is already there.
I'll let you know as soon as I get an update. The plan - right now - is to run a blood panel, try for a UA/culture, check for bean, start on antibiotics. Depending on results of physical exam, blood and UA, he may need an ultrasound, but will decide that later.
I've worked with this vet before (he did the post-acquisition, post-illness, pre-purchase exam on Tabby before she came down here) and he was very good, responsive and communicative.
Later,
