I may run into a problem, going into the adoption app it states that CBER must get a written release from the boarding facility stating that they have been told of the horses origins and that it is ok to board there. My barn will NOT allow any horse that has been exposed to a disease. Is the 3 month QT enough to guarantee that??

contact CBER directly for that, jeepgirl...they work with the WA State Vet, and should have the best info...

Ok, she will go pick her up today... with the bail paid and a qt offer for the month. Are we SURE we have enough for her? Is there anything in the Angel fund if we don't have enough?

Her bail is met so she is ok till adopted, 1st month of QT is also offered, need anyone interested to submit adoption application and yes, and horse being boarded would need written release from owner that oks horse coming there. The horse can be qt'ed here until vet checked clean and ready to go if that is sufficient for barn owner.

Guys, it does not look good for Crescent and I. Unless I can come up with some new info to convince her otherwise, my stable owner will not let her come there. If anyone else is interested please try for her. I want her to have a good home!!! I am still working on it, but I am losing hope. I am going to check with other stables today.

Even with quarantine at Sam's?

Post by swissgrl on Jan 31, 2007 13:33:05 GMT -5
Do they want a certain period of quarantine, or are they saying no, period, because she's come off the lot?

Post by agilitygal on Jan 31, 2007 13:53:15 GMT -5
If she's been paid for with donations, is off the lot, at a CBER quarantine facility, is she still considered safe? Any chance she would end up back on the lot? Can she stay at the CBER facility until she is adopted elsewhere? What kind of support will she need?

Talk to your vet - my stable relied on my vet. His concern was more for my guys getting utd on their shots so MINE wouldn't get sick from the RESIDENT horses, even after I gave their whole history. He felt that any time horses get together (shows, stables, auction, etc.) there is always a risk of disease transfer. I explained to him that there was concern by some that there was abnormal strains of strangles, etc. that the horses had been exposed to. He looked at me like I was crazy and said that if there was, he would know about it.
They need their vacs (including strangles), wait 30 days, then booster, so should be good to go after that. You would probably want to wait 1-2 weeks before the first shots to make sure she isn't sick with something else to not further compromise her immune system.
Just tell her Crescent will be current on her vaccines, and quarantined until cleared by a vet (with a minimum of 30 days). Over 1000 horses have come through CBER from the FLO (who is also a saddle horse broker), and many horses, if not most, go to stables. Tell her that CBER and the FLO work with and are following quarantine/strangles procedures determined by the Washington State Vet.

Crescent is up ay Sams and she looks great.. I don't think she was on the feed lot very long and Sam is starting her on Penicillian..Even if you have a release and a healh certificate from the vet she won't let you bring her there?? There is a great chance she will not get strangles because we got to her on time..

On the boarding contract it states you have to sign a release saying that the horse has not been exposed to any communicable disease, so thats where she's got me. I can't sign that because she MAY have been exposed. And she believes that strangles can show up MONTHS later. You know how people are when they are SURE they are right... I have been looking for another facility but so far everyone is full up for the winter. I'm not giving up, though

NO ONE could guarantee that! EVERY horse is exposed to comunicable diseases throughout their lives. (Good thing, too.) Plus vaccinations are "exposure" to communicable disease, which I'm sure she requires. Does she forbid horses to leave the stable for shows, trail rides, etc. because they might be exposed to something?
Sorry, this pisses me off because it sounds like she's using this as an excuse to discriminate against rescue horses. I apologize for the for the rant - it's not directed at you. Good luck and I hope it works out for you and Crescent. If not, we all understand that there are insurmountable road blocks that come up.
Finding boarding in the winter is difficult. Where are you? Maybe someone here can help...

I am boarding in Salem right now, but anything in that area would work for me. there are alot of things on her contract I have NEVER seen before. I just don't know what to do...

Don't give up yet, jeepgirl. Start a thread in the General dialogue area asking members in the Salem area if they have a place on their farms or know of a situation...it may not be an 'official' stable, but at this point I would look for a temp. pasture or something like that...
