Here is a Portland CL ad:
Absolutely Stunning/Gorgeous Belgian Stallion. Gentle. $350 Reply to: comm-268043816@craigslist.org Date: 2007-01-24, 8:37PM PST
I have a BEAUTIFUL Belgian stallion (Fabio) that I am looking to find a new home for. He is one of the best looking that I have seen around. His mane is to die for. Super thick and loooong. His forlock covers his eyes. He is built like a TANK. He stands about 16.2 and is as wide as a Mac truck. His legs are like tree trunks. I bought him at the Wooburn auction. His owners brought him there because they were moving back east and could not take him. He is gentle towards humans and is a really great horse. He is easy to handle. UTD on shots and worming. He loads, ties, stays in an electric fence, is great in a stall.. He has been sat on and led around with someone on his back he will probably not be hard to break out. He is studdy around mares in heat. Is controllable around the mares in heat with a stud chain. He is suppost to be real gentle with smaller mares. He is VERY talkative. I think he would do best in a corral or pasture by himself. The reason I need to find him a new home NOW is because he got into it with my boyfriends gelding and just plain does not like him. I have had him turned out with my other horses without any problems..The gelding is his baby and is worth BIG $$ so Fabio must go now. Our original plans were to geld him and train him. We do not have the space for him if he cannot get along with the others. Just causes to much comotion and I do not have the time to deal with it. He is worth 10x what I am asking for him when gelded and trained. The vet said it would cost between $250-$300 to get him gelded. This guy has TONS of potential with the right person. He just needs attention and someone to work him. Not for beginners he would be best suited with an experienced horseman/horsewoman.. I need him gone ASAP! Taking a loss come get him now! Everything I know about him and have experienced with him is listed. Dont ask any questions if the answer is not in my ad. I have had him a week this Friday. Serious inquiries only!! Rehoming fee of $350 Firm! Posting ID: 268043816
I was at the auction when she purchased him. I didn't look closely, but he did appear very friendly and she is only asking what she purchased him for.

It might cost more to geld if he's retained a bit....Don't know, but that's a possibility. I think $300-350 is the going rate in my neck of the woods for a standard gelding. Never needed to have it done, but sedation and ranch call alone would put it at $120 or more for me.

It cost $192.00 this last Novemeber to have our mini gelded. When you take in the farm call, tetnus, etc... it adds up quick She has pics of him. He IS dreamy. They also sold a Belgian Mare for about 100.00 less. They made a nice looking matched pair. Both long flowing manes.... If we only had the space. He'd look funny keeping house with our mini. The big and little of it.

I have dealt with stallions prior, but never one that is freshly gelded, if he is 8 years old and just gelded, how long does it take to loose the "studdy" behavior or is it ever gone??

I am not an expert, nor do I have much stallion expierence, but I have heard from others; once a horse displays studdy behavior, he may always do so.

It really depends on the horse. They're all different. Young horses that have never been used for breeding, rule of thumb is 90 days. Some stallions can be studdy after the fact. They retain much of their behavior even after gelded other than they are sterile. Then, there are those that become little angels ;D
Our geld cost on him here would be close to the $400.00 range due to his size and age.

He would cost about 750 to geld here... I paid just less than that for my 2 year old draft colt this year... since they have to ligate the drafts, it is more... oh, and add to that he is an adult.. well, honestly the vets here wouldn't even do him on the ranch, he'd be a 'go to UC Davis" guy... so, he'd cost you a lot just to geld... but then you would have a nice gelding from the sounds of it... but, sounds like they bred him, so he might not be so docile around the ladies, just don't know.... hell of a price to try it out tho!
and the guy who wants a draft.. WHY does he want one? what IS he gonna do with it? does he know about horses? and gee... it will be the only one there! it will be one lonely horse... and not even getting out to 'work' for his owner...

I had actually been in contact with this same man several months ago, tried to put him in touch with CBER for Azreal. His response was "they want too much for her". So I checked him off my list.

I looked at my auction notes and I had down that he sold for $235.00 and is 9 years old. Not that it really matters. Very cheap for such a big handsome guy.
