Ok, so long story short...I was cleaning my toilet this morning (living the dream) when I received a phone call from a neighbor lady who recently took in 5 rescue horses (Emaciated, lice, you name it...oh and 2 mares with newborns). The place where she got the horses from had a youngster who had gotten into a fight with a T post and lost...Oh shoot! The owner was just going to shoot it.....I frantically made a few phone calls (countrymouse being one of them as usual--she is my partner in crime), and before I knew it I was on my way to see what was going on with the 'baby'. It turns out it was NOT a baby, but a (appears to be) coming 3? year old....with a huge gash on her front. My friend and I walked up to her and both said "That's not bad!" (We were thinking it would be in the gut or ) It is in a great area, where it will drain nicely....Oh, and the little lady has never been handled, is covered in lice and appears to be loaded with worms (It keeps getting better and better) We took our time and got her into the trailer (That's another book) and brought her to my house. She is now haltered, powdered, has had a tetanus shot and is eating a bowl of mush with Smz's in it...I have also cleaned out the wound! (Did I mention how gross it is?!) Her weight is not too bad, maybe 100-150 under btw.....My husband was so ticked, but then softened when he looked at her...She has a great mind, and a nice build and did I mention lots of color?! Pictures are to come soon!!!

Chel, will this type of wound have a drain put in it and some type of bandaging to close the edges?

Leanne, right now it just needs flushed out and kept clean. She is on antibiotics 2X a day as well as the flushing 2 X a day...it will be a day by day thing, we will probably end up having to 'clean it up' but want to wait on her getting settled etc. I am also going to have her preg checked, because she is most likely bred You will be amazed at how nicely this will heal though!! It is in a great location, and is draining very nicely on its own! It will not require a drain tube, or bandaging. Keeping it really clean is the key!!

You can't tell by the pictures how DEEP it is, but I could easily stick my hand inside of it! GROSS! Let's pray it hasn't done damage to the tendons...she was moving pretty good on it, but does drag the leg a bit...It is really sore though and she is exhausted. She was trotting on it when we went to catch her, so at this point I am not too concerned.

Oh, the blankets hanging over the stall side was DH's idea...thought it would make her not want to go through the wall I don't think she has it in her, she has lost a lot of blood and is really weak....

I took more pictures but my stupid computer won't cooperate! I will also take more in the morning on my way to work so I have daylight on my side. I will post them soon after. She is very sweet and really wants to try liking us. Poor thing is scared to death and really hurting. We are considering the name Anne as in Orphan Anne....

Awe, she is too cute! I like Anne for a name... :-)
that wound looks good!!! not at all dirty, and I'll bet it heals up just great! My suggestion is to use Equine Elite spray, it gets everywhere without having to touch the wound... I'd hose for a few days to flush, then try your hardest to leave it alone, so it doesn't get proudflesh... once it starts to 'fill' in with granulation... she is a definate diamond in the rough! you will get all kinds of ooohs and ahhhs, when she is all filled out! Great job!

Beth, I cleaned it out before the pictures I don't know that hosing is an option at this point, she is not halter broke and my house is in front of the barn. I am using a spray bottle to flush it out really good and have ordered the EE spray!!! Like I said above, if we can get some funds rounded out I am going to try my darndest to get the babies out. They are all nicely colored like her! The guy that has them has already shot 4 horses out there this year, we need to help those babies too!

It is weird, but the pictures do not show how deep the wound is. Deb and I could easily stick a fist in it.....

The little girl is doing good this morning, she had her head down in the feed pan while I was dumping her SMZ tainted ( ) mush into it. The only way I can get her to eat it is if it is slathered in molasses and a dash of Syrup....Debi brought down a big bucket of molasses that we had when Rosie and the gang were being re-habbed.....Anne seemed to be settled in, had 2 nice big poops and a good pee spot...she had drank some water and ate a good portion of her hay too! I put probiotics and lixotinic in her mush too, which she didn't seem to mind as long as it was mixed in good with the alfalfa pellets and molasses!!!

Ouch! That looks horrible. But, having had no experience with these kinds of injuries, I'll take all your words that it will heal well. She's a beauty, too. By the time you get done treating her hands on every day, she will either be a love bug or shy away from the medical treatments. Let's hope she likes the attention and food sooooo much that she chooses to become the love bug! Best wishes to you and this project. She's definitely worth it!

Wounds like this in humans can heal extremely well if treated properly. Sounds like you have it all under control. I LOVE appys and this one is gonna love you forever. They have a way of bonding and trusting. Thank you for rescuing this little one.

Does this guy want money the other babies? Is there homes in line for them if we do have to raise some fund?

Uhm....we are not keeping this little gal, any takers?! I think if I offered $100 apiece he would take it in a heartbeat! There is a blonde LOUD colored appy, a bay appy (Loud too), a bay (No color--but nice) and some other ones that were running wild out there.......I showed all 3 doctors pics of the wound today, they all thought it would heal nicely and barely leave a scar!!!

It is on her 'forearm' and side of chest.....The meth head who has the babies (Almost yearlings? They are small for their age) Said he would sell them for $100 each. If we are going to save them, we will have to move FAST. This is a very dangerous place for me to be going into, and he is severely unstable!! Anybody interested in taking one? They are REALLY nice looking!!! Any further info will have to be done via PM, as we can not have this getting into the wrong hands.....I can go get them WEDNESDAY if someone is interested....I just can't hang on to these little guys forever, or my husband will kill me! I will get halters on them, de-louse, and give them great care until they can go to their new home!!! Modified to add: Little Miss Orphan Annie has quite the attitude today, she is feeling MUCH better and saucy! I flushed out her wound, and curried her a bit....she wants to like me, but also wants me to leave her the heck alone! She is pooping and peeing a ton, there were 6 piles when I got home and Deb had picked her stall mid morning (I did at 6am). She is eating hay and loving her special mixture I have concocted for her!!! Everybody who has stopped to see her is amazed at how nice she is, she really does have great bone! Oh, and she may be pregnant... Did I mention that already?!

I can't say where they are located, sorry guys...you will have to trust me on this one....I will post pics when I can get them out, I am shooting for tomorrow...I will say this, this is the last time I will be able to go out there, and my husband is coming with me because it's that scary! My paypal is love2godiva@yahoo.com I think the guy will take $50 apiece for the babies and $500 for the mare who just foaled on Sunday. I will post more tonight, this is a draining nightmare!

Transportation is my biggest problem. If I couldn't find other transportation, could you keep a baby or two at your place until the camping thing?

I could totally hang on to them until July! My big thing is I don't have enough barn room when Winter hits!!! I am expecting the 'owner' to get in contact with me in the am, then I will head out and pick them up! I want to get the 2 stud colts gelded as soon as they are strong enough (which will not be long) I may take them right over to the clinic and leave them there until that is taken care of!! The little girl will be coming into her foal heat soon, so we need to get her out of there before the Stallion kills her. I can get a castration done for around $150 a head.

Modified to add, the babies will be easy to work with and will be mauled while they are here! Annie is doing great, REFUSING to eat grain, alfalfa pellets etc. I have tried molasses, syrup and applesauce...I am thinking I may have to go injectable, as she is not getting her antibiotics since I have been mixing them in her grain mush...she nibbles at it, but is not cleaning it up....more interested in the hay!! She ate it really good the first night, and now literally rolls her lip up at it! ACK!
