Well, my little Gypsy girl is progressing along nicely. We're riding a LOT right now, very cool ;D I have a Crates wide tree that fits pretty good, but I noticed that there were some dry areas when I took the saddle off. Not a good thing. She's not in pain, but I want her to be totally comfortable!!! Anyway, saddling her is like saddling a 50-gallon drum. She has a VERY wide, short, flat back. My Circle Y flex tree is also on a FQH tree, but tends to slip. She's got NO withers at all. She will be hard to fit, anybody have any suggestions? I was looking at a Big Horn Halflinger saddle. It says it also works for mutton withered with short back horses. Has anyone used one of these saddles before? Hey Tock, do you have a good saddle for Symph? I think Gypsy and Symph have a similar build

Hey Tock, do you have a good saddle for Symph? I think Gypsy and Symph have a similar build I finally just ordered a Wide Tree Roper (draft?) From Riders Choice. It's the first one that wasn't to tight on her shoulders.. in fact it's a smidge too big so I added a built up pad and it works. Of course shes HUGE already so not cinching her at all.. She did slide up next to me and bump my leg while I was on the ladder tightening nuts on the shelter cover, asking me to climb on... Guess she feels I have been neglecting her by not been doing any fence work or sitting on her. ( she gets back and butt rubs when I do..) This was the first time I was up taller then her in the yard in a while, and she wanted some rubbing!!!

Hey, I've been looking at Rider's Choice saddles on eBay. They look really nice, especially the ones made by GW Crate. I had never heard of them before. Maybe I'll give it another thought Thanks for the advice. Awwww, Symph wants you to play even heavy with child. Now that is TRUE Love!!!!

I bought the roper for me and paid a little more to get matching leather off billet, back cinch, and breast collar. This is a Heavy Duty saddle, real US leather, and workmanship. I liked it so much I ordered Beth a barrel saddle from them that she loves! Upgraded to matcing. And Symphony was mad at me for sending Chester to Angi's but is now back to being VERY cuddly and not wanting to share mom! Hayden has.. 12 days to go? I NEED to get the foal cam up.

Crates are well-known for being great quality. I wonder where Wendy Pangle is? If she saw this, she'd be saying "GET A BLACK RHINO!", which are handmade saddles from Minnesota by a company called "About the horse".

Check K&S Saddlery - I had a custom saddle built by them several years ago to fit a horse I was roping on. Had an awful time with saddles pinching in his shoulders or rolling on his back. They were GREAT and I ended up with a perfect saddle fit for both my horse and for me for about the same price as a crates or circle y would have cost.

Do you use these pads? If so, are you 100% pleased with them? Thanks! Aimee

Hi Caryn: I have a Tennessee Walker gelding that was built the same way, short backed, round as a barrel when he was 4, 5, 6 years old. I went through a lot of saddles and he went through a lot of pain, unfortunately. I even had a custom saddle made for him. It left the biggest white marks ever.
I eventually bought an Ortho Flex saddle. He's now 14 years old and his back has changed (he actually has withers now) but the saddle still fits. Yes, you pay good money for the Ortho Flex saddles but you have one saddle for the life of the horse and you can use it on many other horses also.
Keep an eye out for used ones. They are out there.
Good luck.

Have you considered a treeless? I got one for Bird since she's got some withers on her and she's kinda 2D almost... She looks like a bigger horse from the side than from the front. Don't know how to explain it, but fitting a saddle to her isn't so easy. The Hilason (Marshall knock off) I have fits great, though. Treeless isn't for everyone, but it's an idea.
