Hey there - you can give 1 benedryl 25mg tab per 100 pounds body weight 2x per day. this may make your kid a little sleepy - but will help alot. Also - I make up a mix that helps Kadin alot. Mix a jar of bag balm with 2 bottles of the liquid camphophanique(sp??) stir it together. Slather it on the bites. It will calm the itchiness and help sooth the skin. Also - elmininating alfalfa in the diet and adding full fat ground flaxseed does help some horses. Also - adding large amounts of B-complex vitamins seems to help some horses - it makes them seem not quite as tasty to the bugs also - when standard fly sprays fail - i use this recipe. Use an old fly spray bottle to mix it up in. Buy a 10% pyretherin pour on solution(available at dels and online) Add 60cc's to the bottle. THEN - go to wal-mart and get some 100% deet. Add 4 ounces of deet to the bottle. THEN - pour in 4 ounces of avon skin so-soft(if you have it) or just fill with water or mineral oil for longer staying power. Remember to shake well befrore spraying it on. That is the ONLY mix that keeps my poor kid from being attacked by the no-see-ums that cause sweet itch. Hope the above helps!!! sara in WA

A couple other things to try are: adding vinegar to their feed, eventually it changes the blood chem a bit and permeates the body smell in the tissues and changes the pH a bit and flies/mosquitoes do not like it, Start very light so horse gets used to it, ( eg. less than 1/4 cup, and build up to 1/2 cup, etc) it takes a bit but once on it steadily does seem to help. Also, Springtime has a great garlic feed additive for horses and it really seems to do a good job on repelling those small biting gnats, etc, and helping the skin in the process. It is formulated for horses and burros and they have many success stories. It also helps with Ticks and is called:" Bug Off Garlic", I have used it with success on my burros who are very sensitive to biting gnats and flies and it really works if fed consistantly. They have many other great products as well. www.springtimeinc.com its a premium grade and better formulated compared to the regular brands and has a good effect on the immune system and as an insect repellent. Has much higher content of Alliin content based on lab analysis than other brands Many people write in that their allergic fly sensitive horses no longer get hives, etc when on this.

Wonderful info! As a Master Herbalist student, I am always looking for 'natural' ways to treat animals, and, humans, of course...I like your ideas of treating from 'within' and not on the 'outside' of the body (which is treating the symptoms and not the actual cause)....thank you so much...if you have any more natural treatments, I'd love to hear. I am writing a book on natural tretments/cures for animals and also will be including natrural treatment experiences, so, if you or anyone else would like their experiences included with your name and location, etc., if you like, feel free to pass them on to me. I am especially interested in old-time, old-world type treatments. Thanks again, Aimee A couple other things to try are: adding vinegar to their feed, eventually it changes the blood chem a bit and permeates the body smell in the tissues and changes the pH a bit and flies/mosquitoes do not like it, Start very light so horse gets used to it, ( eg. less than 1/4 cup, and build up to 1/2 cup, etc) it takes a bit but once on it steadily does seem to help. I give Vitamin C powder, 10 tablets of Hydroxazine am/pm and use equispot. Works great! I also make sure under their bellies has a nice coat of either swat or desitin.
