Thanks a bunch. Your help helped me find Hank. and he's fine and he may be up for sale soon. Hank, was a horse I trained as a two year old in college and at the end of the two year program had to sell him at auction. 1994 was the last time I saw him, I knew where he had gone for the first home, then lost track of him after they sold him. I typed in his name over four years ago and found him for sale again. He was rehomed yet again, and I lost track of him, not knowing if he was okay. I loved this horse dearly, best horse I've ever rode, calm , level headed. I nicknamed him my hanky panky. I joined a Canadian horse forum and put my plea out there hoping someone might know him, within days someone answered my thread. Through a combined effort with Shawna and a gal in Edmonton, Alberta, I've found Hank, got his home number, well, not his personally but the family that owns him. He is still being used as a roping horse and he may be up for sale soon as the owner was just diagnosed with cancer. That being said, he's a province away and I'm hoping if he does come up for sale I can get him, if the price is right too. I think it would be so awesome to see him come full circle and back to me. ;D ;D I will be calling the owner later tonite to find out how he's been. I am so excited.

Okay, I feel a tad deflated. I phoned the fella that owns Hank. He's asking 9-10,000 for him, as he's a quality rope horse. According to the fella that owns him; he's not a pet, he won't sell him to be a lead and feed, he's not attached to any of his horses as they come and go, horses are there to work and serve a purpose and are just pieces of meat (all his words), he doesn't keep lead and feeds. I at that point was at a loss for words. He will be sold, and then who knows if I'll find him again. I feel so deflated by his callous remarks about horses. They are not just pieces of meat, that horse meant alot to me, dang it.

Well you can ask at least for him to pass your name along as the person that started the horse and that if he ever needs a place to land, you would welcome him. He probably wont get that much for him, although if he is as good a rope horse as that price would require I doubt he will find himself in trouble for awhile. You can also take pride in the fact that you started him right!

How old is Hank now, 15 or 16. Isn't that a lot of money for a middle aged horse? I am sorry you are so hurt by this mans remarks. Evidently even his good horses do not mean anything to him. Don't give up hope Emma.

I gave the guy my number and said that if hank needed somewhere to retire if he was unusable as a roping horse to call me. he is 18 I am so ticked he refered to him as meat.

Emjay , I'm so sorry this guy doesn't care, you did however start Hank off great, and I'm so glad you at least found him. I would keep checking with the guy, who knows maybe if he doesn't get that much for him, you might be able to talk him down to your level, as you were the one that started him. Good luck!

Well that's pretty darn crappy of him! Too bad he's an idiot and doesn't have the horses best interest in mind.
Hopefully there is something you can do? Perhaps he won't sell at that price and he'll drop it, a lot!

thanks, I'm glad I found him too. He says that if Hank were half his age he'd get 25,000 for him. Does anyone have that kind of money anymore?? wow. I had to bite my tongue talking to him as I didn't want to ruin any chance I might have.

Yeah, that's bullshit. I remember reading about the four sixes ranch sale last year. Their top roping horse at that sale went for about 10,000 and he wasn't 18. This guy is whistling in the wind if he thinks he'll get that.

While there is no doubt that he (the rancher) does view his horses a commodities, my guess is he's trying to yank your chain a bit since you appear to be one of those "horsey do-gooders".
You might want to insert someone who can talk the cowboy talk in between to actually (try to) buy the horse if he does go up for sale.
And, meanwhile, I'd write a nice letter on bright paper and ask him to insert it into the ownership papers saying something like "guaranteed retirement home". You might want to write Katie Moore (watermark farm) and get her verbage. She has a standard document that goes out to her adopters (in case something happens to them and someone - who doesn't know Katie's or her adoption contract - is executor of the estate and is responsible for "disposing" of the horses) to make sure the horses return to her no matter what. Anyway, you have less control that the paper WILL go with the Bill of Sale as the horse moves along, but it's worth a try. Nothing ventured...eh?
Don't give up. Where there is a will......
mta: you were right to hold your tongue. Sometimes you have to put up with all kinds of sh*t in order to achieve your objective of getting the animal!
