I just got a call from oregon that our little filly that came in has had to be put down. Over the last few hours her nerological symptoms started getting worse by the minute - to the point that she could not rise and was drewling horribly. She was taken into the clinic where they did a quick x-ray of her head and found an ENORMOUS tumor on her brain. She was humanely euthenized and the vet has requested permission to send out a sample of the tumor so we know what it is. I agreed - so that will be done. I do think that neglect led to part of the problem - but this is a sad sad thing. Her new mom is now frantic and has been put with a bottle calf in the mean time to help her still have something to mother.
The little boy is doing outstanding and has a bright future!!!
Thought I would post for all that had followed their initial drop off ot me up here.

I knew something was not right - looking back an x-ray maybe should have been done sooner - but all involved felt like it would resolve with food and care. I am happy knowing that she had a momma and alot of love before she left the earth - unlike where she came from. I will be anxious to know what kind of tumor/mass this was. It is NOT common for a youngster of this age to have a mass this big. Talked to the vet and she said she has never seen anything quite like it.

I apologize - I need to get pictures uploaded and posted of the kids. I am on dial up at home because we have no other options out here - so uploading anything can take HOURS!

We wo'nt kno for a while yet about the tumor - samples were sent off this morning. i will post info once I get it. I knew something was "off" about her from the begining - just couldn't quite figure it out. I had figured, as had the vets, that it was from starvation/lack of care, ect. Which- I think ADDED and increased symptoms - but it is possible she was born with problems - which makes me worry for how the mare was cared for(not that allfoal problems haev to due with mare care)
I am happy she is not suffering any longer though.
On a POSITIVE note - this little boy is running the roost at the ranch. He pushes EVERYONE around. Babies, moms, even the 2 yearling geldings put out there for him to play ith lol. He is a total spaz. I get stories about him daily. I guess yesterday he managed to get a branch in his mouth(small around - but LONG) and was running wildly with it - beating the snot out of anything in his way. LOL My ranch managers said that anytime he gets near any of the other mares they pinn their ears at him lolol. I think he is going to be a great horse - smart, funny, and a total spaz. Thank GOD his new mom is one of the most tolerant horses I have ever had! LOL

I'm sorry, Sara. Regardless of how it comes about, saying good bye is always so very hard. For the youngsters, it's harder yet, because you have such aspirations for their future. Please know that I am thinking of you. I am so happy the little guy is doing well, he will no doubt give someone great joy in his companionship.
