ACTION ALERT

Dear California AQHA Member:

Congressman Lynn Woolsey (CA-6th) has co-sponsored H.R. 6598, which would make the possession, sale or transport of horses to processing for human consumption a criminal offense.

As with H.R. 503, there is no provision in this legislation for the humane disposition of an unwanted horse population. This new bill does not detail provisions on what will be required for verification by horse owners, transporters, sale companies and others to prove horses ARE NOT being transported or held in possession with the intent of processing for human consumption. Further, enacting this type of legislation without providing funding for care and addressing the fact that untrained individuals may be seizing horses is RECKLESS. Your congressman should be focusing on the economy and high energy prices!

We urge you to oppose this legislation. Please contact Representative Burton and express to her that in a time where the horse industry is in great economic downturn due to drought, high hay and feed prices, high fuel prices and low sale prices, this bill poses yet another hardship to horse owners.

It makes me sick that the AQHA position is like this. For YEARS AND YEARS of breeding excellent quality foundation quarter horses and working to breed outstanding ranch horses for our OWN personal use - It almost makes me sick to be even a part of the quarter horse world. We have always held ourselves and our breeding program to the HIGHEST standards. We breed for ourselves first - to have replacement horses on the ranch and occasionally one that shines even higher above and is pushed to futurities or other types of showing. We do sell if we have someone specifically interested, but we have never been a mass breeder. Last year we only had 2 babies - this year we are a little higher than that.

I agree whole heartedly that there are MANY MANY people out there breeding that should ABSOLUTELY not be breeding their horses. Very few "back yard" horse owners or individuals have reason to breed outside oft eh "thrill" of a baby - and don't see the flaws in their own horses before they breed. So rather than improving the breed as a whole - they just add to an over populate of average or below average horses that end up in a throw away society...

Makes me feel sick.

Well as someone who has rarely bred, I can say that while babies are REALLY cute in pictures, provide some great entertainment, and you do LOVE them....

They are a lot of work and worry.

I can't tell you how many hours of sleep I lost watching Delite. Hayden was kind enough to foal early with no warning.. and did I mention never sick Symphony coliced TWICE and practically stopped eating the last few weeks? She was MISERABLE!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the babies we got, and I Thank GOD everyone is Healthy, Happy, and cute, but I'm not planning any repeats!!!
