SAD NEWS IN THE CHUCKWAGON WORLD IN CANADA.
VETERAN DRIVER HERMAN FLAD AND 14 OF HIS PRIZED THOROUGHBREDS WERE KILLED IN A HIGHWAY ACCIDENT IN NORTHERN ALBERTA YESTERDAY. IT'S VERY SAD NEWS. I MET HERMAN FLAD YEARS AGO AND GREW UP IN THE AREA HIS FAMILY WAS FROM. VERY SAD NEWS.

Thoroughbreds? Chuckwagons?
Please don't tell me his TBs were used to haul chuckwagons. Please.

all chuckwagon drivers use thoroughbreds, they use thoroughbreds that are no longer fast enough for the racing circuit, some of whom would have been shipped to Fort Macleod. I don't watch chucks, as I think it's dangerous. But alot of drivers love these horses, they call them their 'family' and I know Herman loved his.

TB's are the main breed used in Chuckwagon races.

Dallas Dorchester , another big name in chuckwagon racing died this morning, 24 hours after Herman Flad died. He died after a battle with cancer. A sad couple of days in the chuckwagon community.

just watched a news clip on the story, very sad, a scene of carnage, the horses everywhere, such a tragedy. Herman Flads son gave an interview, is racing today in his honor. His dad was supposed to retire this year, and didn't want to. as he loved the sport so much. His son believes his dad would have wanted to go out this way, in the fact that he didn't retire and that he has his horses with him, he loved his horses very much, loved them like his kids. It's a sad sad story. He was one example of a driver who loved his horses as much as his two legged family. modified to add, one horse did survive the crash. crazy thing about this horse that lived, he was new to the family, hadn't been with Herman that long. Strange that the long time horses all died and not the newbie. who knows
