My dear friend called me last night crying. Her big puppy dog warmblood may have to be put down. She took him to work with her because he had been off since the weekend. They dug around for an abscess (which she had already done to no avail), which they could not find so they X-rayed. 'Dante' has a fractured Coffin joint. My friend is devastated. His prognosis is 'FAIR'. She can not afford to feed a pasture pet, so he will be put down if he has not improved in 2 weeks. He is in a stall, with a little pink cast on his big goofy foot. This horse is the biggest dorkiest, 5 year old (Previous rescue) you have ever seen! He reminds me of a big Great Dane!!!! Anybody have experience with something similar to this? I think she is going to borrow my mini, Nickel for company. Please jingle like mad for this big boy! Chel

I would tell your friend DONT give up on him. Malibu BROKE her navicular bone in her rear foot - she punctured a hole in the deep digital flexor tendon as well. She was on full stall rest for 6 months and was in a larger turnout pen(24x30) outside for another 2 months. During that time, I worked with my wonderful farrier and vets and a year later - Despite the fact that she has an OCD in that SAME hock - I am starting saddle training and she is doing really well.
A coffin bone fracture is not always a life ender. The horse may not be a jumper in the future - but I don't think 2 weeks is long enough to give a fair assesment of final outcome. I also suggest having the radiographs sent to specialists outside of the area for assesment. If possible - having an MRI done to rule out soft tissue damage is also a good idea.

Jingles for your friend. I hope she changes her attitude about affording a pasture pet, and works out a more hopeful timeframe than 2 weeks.

With enough rest and care that type of injury usually heals fine.

Dante is doing better, not in as much pain. Deb is coming down to get little Nickel to use as 'company'. Nickel is thrilled......Deb had meant by the 2 week time frame I mentioned above, that if the cast did not help, and he was still in pain and 3 legged lame then she would have him put down. She didn't want him to suffer....But he is doing well!! So, keep the jingles coming! Chel
