Hi Barb-
I encourage you to hang in there with Mystic. And feed her whatever it takes to keep her strong-just no spices. Roasted chicken or turkey are usually highly palatable.
If she were my dog I would get a second opinion. I think we all want to believe our vet has all the answers but sometimes another vet has had different experiences in practice. That might bring something more to the table.
For myself and my animals, a pinched nerve would have me looking for acupuncture and chiropractic care. Drugs can be helpful but alternatives are sometimes a real plus in resolving this sort of problem.
I'll be thinking of you and Mystic. Our dog buddys are such a joy and treasure.

Hi Barb,
I'm so sorry to hear about Mystic.........Jingles going out to her.
A suggestion for your vet - if they would xray her back, they may find spondylosis - which is a bridging of the spine where the vertebrae actually kinda grow together, and it can pinch a nerve. Depending on where it might be pinched, it may or may not be operable............
I don't know if you saw the newfs when you came to my place, but I have had two newfs with Spondylosis and I think it's more common than people think, but it can only be detected with xrays, and I don't think many vets know to look for it........
My first newf, Briggs, had it, and it was back towards the hips, so we had the surgery done to put pins in to keep his hip joints open ever so slightly so the nerve didn't pinch - he had surgery when he was 4 or 5 years old, and lived to be 13.
My other newf, Eli, came up lame one day, and within a matter of days he looked like he had been hit by a car in the rear (he hadn't, but that's what it looked like, he was dragging his hindend). My vet xrayed his hips, and since he was OFA Good, I didn't think it was the hips, so I asked to have his back xrayed....my vet was skeptical, but since I had been down this road before, it was a hunch. The xrays showed massive spondylosis, and a probable spot for the pinched nerve. Since it was inoperable, and we couldn't control the pain - you could see his back seizing up, spasms, etc - we let him go. He was only 8.
I hope this isn't what she has, and maybe your vet has already taken xrays and ruled this out...............
Best wishes......... Oh, and people food won't hurt her at all! Cooked chicken, brown rice, veggies, pizza, leftovers, my dogs get all that (okay except cooked chicken and rice - they get raw chicken hindquarters instead)

FYI - Ceph. can give the kids a HORRIBLE tummy ache. It is a very very strong drug and is really brash ont eh digestive system. I would suggest giving this kid 1/2 cup plain yogurt daily for the next 14 days and adding a dose of probios to each feeding. This will help settle your kids tummy a bit. Also - the steriods can reduce inflamation - but again, have alot of side effects. One thing that does help with the thirst that this drug can produce is to go ahead and mix her water in the house 50/50 plain pedia-lyte(or generic equiv.) Available at any pharmacy. This will get some electrolytes into your kid.
one thing that was always recommended to dogs that go off of their feed, have inflamation in the body and are on meds by the vets i worked for was to go ahead and feed boiled chicken breats rather than the normal food. You can get a 10 pound bag of boneless frozen breasts at costco for around $14. This should last plenty long enough to get your kid through the meds. With my boxer - who is 70 pounds or so - I would feed 2 breasts 2x per day diced up and boiled just till done. I served them with the water - he would drink the water because it tastes good which helped fluids. I also added a full pinch of salt to each feeding when cooking.
I agree about x-raying the spine and chest cavity. There are a variety fo things that can cause a spinal issue - and without a good look - it is hard to know what it is.
Take care and hang in there. Sara

Just a word of caution about the chiro, if you don't have xrays, then they are kinda working blind - not knowing what they might make worse. I would go for Acupuncture - I think that has the highest odds of success, and it 'can't hurt, might help'. WendyP/Bend, OR

I agree Wendy. I NEVER EVER EVER EVER do chiro work on a horse or dog with spinal issues without knowing EXACTLY what is going on. Just like with people - if someone is tweeking on a spinal cord/column withotu knowing what is there - they risk major problems.
Acupuncture is great, as is massage.

When the back is hurt often times it hurts to strain to get into the position to poo - try giving 2-4 tablespoons of metimucil in the food a couple times a day to help soften things up - OR you can give 1-2 capsules of stool softener. This should make it a bit easier for your kid. Poor thing.

Jingles for Mystic. I know how wrenching it is to be in this situation.
Try acupuncture.
There's a vet here in Oakland who does it. I'm very impressed with the results.
The dog is a 16.5 year old border collie mix w/kidney disease and arthritis. She's had 3 acupuncture treatments to date and is much more comfortable, drinking well (no longer dehydrated, no more needles for the moment), appetite improved, and is altogether much improved.
She won't live forever but my goal is to keep her comfortable. It's expensive ($85 per treatment), but I put it on CareCredit. She'll have one more treatment this weekend and then we take a break.
There are two other oldies waiting in the wings.

Is this a chiropractor or an accupuncturist? I sincerely believe xrays should be done before a chiro works on a dog. If it's spondylosis, then the bones have bridged and chiro won't help, but acupuncture could - it didn't help my newf, but that doesn't mean it doesn't work.........
Best Wishes!

I'm so sorry for your loss. We lost our Cody the end of June after a short illness, it isn't easy they are with us for such a short time and in our hearts forever.

I was so hoping that you would have a good outcome with your beautiful girl. It never gets any easier and the holes they leave in our hearts are huge. We are still trying to get back to "normal" here after the loss of 3 dogs last winter. I hope it helps you to know that many people are thinking of you.

I am so sorry for your loss - remember though - our animals spirits stay with us forever - you can know she is still with you - even if it is not in body - it certainly is in spirit.
I hope that your heart finds comfort knowing that she is there with you.
