I have been doing some research into alternate treatments for serious osteoarthritis in horses. One of the things that has come up lately is the anti-inflamatory response when horses are put on Doxicycline. I know "the Horse" did an article regarding this- but am curious if anyone on here has experienced reduced arthritic pain/swelling when they had their horse on doxicycline(used for treatment of lymes or Erlichea)

I used it for uveitis, for the antiinflamatory properties. worked great.

It is a rather harsh drug for the digestive system, but the results in arthritic horses that have significant changes in the bone structure seems to be pretty remarkable. I am going to try it with my senior QH with a huge arthritic knee.

Here is a couple of articles regarding this. Dr. Fortier is one of vets leading the research. I have decided to go ahead and enroll my guy in a study which will be overseen by my local vet. i think that this can make a HUGE difference based on some of the information that I have come across recently. If you have a horse that is starting with non-infectious arthritic changes, talk to your vet about this treatment. It can cause gastric upset, so using ulcer meds while treating can be important - but WOW the treatments are proving to be amazing. www.vet.cornell.edu/labs/fortier/arthritis.htmwww.thehorse.com/viewarticle.aspx?id=11589Sara
