Was talking to one of the local ladies yesterday...She had just donated a horse to Cat Tails...She said she'd never do that again... They put them down on site: at Cat Tails..Not your place During working hours: When people are visiting the cats They unloaded the horse..Two young men came and put Vaseline in her nose..Asked if they would like the rope and halter back..They did... The men lead the horse behind a building and BANG. ..One guy came back around and handed them the rope and halter.. All Done... They left there sick to their stomach and said never again.... Sad, very sad.. .... ....They could have done this with some caring respect to the owners..

Seems pretty efficient.

NOT the point. They should have let the owners know that they intended to shoot the horse right then, and given them the option to leave first. Very thoughtless.

They should have told them, that's true. But, I'm also of the opinion that if you're going to put your horse through that, you go through it with your horse.

kind of agree, what did she think they were going to 'do'? I think she knew they were going to shoot her horse... and I'd think she knew they'd do it right away so as not to scare her she wanted the horse euthanized... and I'm guessing they do it quickly and are a good shot. I don't know... but I think she might have thought ahead about what that meant to donate a horse to be fed to big cats...

I personally would have made them shoot it in front of me to be sure it was done right, but I still feel that they should have been more considerate about how they handled it.
Modified to add that my vet always asks, even though she knows we are there to put down an animal, if we are ready. Its just plain common sense people skills.

agreed, I guess they took them behind the building so she wouldn't have to watch? Our vet asks too. maybe they figured she knew when they asked about the halter... she said yes, so they did it right then so they could return the halter? I just figure most folks who know they are going to shoot them and are prepared as they had to call and arrange it all... it's not like they call on ads and solicit animals. good discussion tho, and might be good feedback for them.

Ok - I prefer to not comment about taking a horse out there (I personally couldn't do it) BUT - I have a very stupid question. What is the vaseline in the nose for???

Maybe the vaseline in the nose was to mask the smells of other dead animals?!

I'm positive the vaseline is to mask the smells. They probably shot her where the other horses/animals were killed.
Personally - if I have to put any of my animals down, I HAVE to be with them, holding them, talking to them. My husband hasn't been able to do it, but I could never live with the guilt of not being there, even if it is for their own good.
But this woman had to realize what they were going to do and how....they can't use drugs if they're feeding animals....she should have asked to stay and make sure it was a clean kill....
I am not looking forward to that day with Reno.......I hope it will be peaceful.

For this lady it was a shock....As it was her first donation to Cat Tail...Oh yah, they also ask for a 75.00 for cremations of the left overs...I thought they eat just about all of it... For me, they should do this when the place is closed...For a half of block away kids are play and looking at big cats...They are closed on monday's, have that animal donation day...

Wow. Well, the woman is in part to blame for not completely researching this before she made the decision to donate her horse to this organization. That being said, the organization is also at fault for not letting the woman know how they would be handling things.
It sounds like it was done quickly and the vaseline would mask any scents that would scare the horse. Hopefully it happened before the horse even had a chance to be scared.
Personally, I hope this woman spreads the word and speaks to the proper people at Cat Tails so they at least learn to handle such a sensitive issue with more decorum.
They have a lot of nerve asking for a donation toward cremation though.

Don't put on a expensive halter/rope...Requist that your gone before they do it... As with any other business, do you leg work first.....
