We went on a three night campout with the horses over the Labor Day weekend, took Bob Marley, Sonny, Mustachio and Token again, and had a blast!
we went to Pt Reyes, camped at Stewart Ranch Horse Camp, and it was lovely, with GREAT trails, going to the visitor's center, in the beautiful woods, and all the way to the ocean!
We went out the first day for over 6 hours, to the beach, going up some wide fire road trails, single tracks, near cliffs, over hill and dale, and down thru creeks, and a ravine, to the ocean! Bob had never SEEN an ocean before! LOL!! and he was surprised to say the least... but did great... he was a bit wary of the odd rocks coming out of the deep sand, but got past them.
the other horses all (15 of us total) went cantering off down the beach, and Token and Bob Marley stayed at the trot for my daughter and I, and we enjoyed a soft beach ride!
We had fun events, a few horses rolled with saddles on, in the sand... oooh felt sooo good... ahem...
and one laid down in the terminal pond on the beach at the end of the creek there... ! LOL!! with his rider mounted up! then, after getting him up and out of there, he rolled in the sand on him too! LOL!!! he is a draft cross... and has a mind of his own! LOL!
The second day we went to the visitor's center, and my older daughter's horse Sonny just could NOT settle down, and Jen was pooped by now... her arms aching, so I finally got her to let me pony him! Bob Marley was such a good boy! Sonny had never ponied... and isn't fond of Sonny, but knew his job! He paid Sonny no mind, and kept on steady as she goes, and after I gave Sonny enough time to understand he had to stay in 'the zone', Bob started giving him corrections with his ears and a snap of the mouth!
It worked! and we made the last hour of the ride with Sonny walking, even after we got to single track, and Sonny had to track behind Bob, he still walked calmly! yeah! day saved!
I luv Bob.. :-)
oh, I forgot! on the beach, after lunch, I climbed on a big log and mounted up... and we rode in the pond thing... that was fun... Bob was less amuzed than I. Then, just as we were getting all the kids saddled and back on, I thought, I'd better check my girth... and realized I'd loosened it ALL the way to hanging under his belly!!! and never even tightened it to get on! he coulda had me at any time! what a good boy... and stupid mom! whew!
I'm downloading the camera, then I'll have some pics..
but I vote we do a campout down here next year... this was an AWESOME campground! well equipped, easy to get to, trails for many hours of riding for weeks on end... easy light trails to hard hills... water to ride in, etc... beautiful!
