Yesterday I met my husband's bosses wife. She came over to fish & BBQ. She asked if she could go see my horses so I took her in showed her what horses were all about. My two geldings, even in the 90 degree heat came over to snuggle. "I didn't know horses snuggled" she said. So I said watch this, I'll show you their tricks. Every one of my horses joins up very easily, and I showed her how they followed my every foot step, in every direction at any given speed, with no ropes. I don't know if she thought that was impressive, so we went fishing.
On the way home, out of the corner of my eye, I saw a black tail and a big beefy back horse leg in the bushes. That must be the wild black stallion. So I backed up and went down the dirt road. Then I saw 3 more horses, 2 chestnuts and a bay. All loose. I've only seen the wild horses in the dark or from a far distance...and now here they were in the daylight right in front of my truck. The black stallion and 2 of the mares ran up the hill. But they bay mare stayed behind. She was standing there looking very intimidating...then I stuck my head out and looked her in the eye and sent her a message that I was safe and why don't you come over her so I can pet you? Well, she cautiously approached and began to sniff and nuzzle my outstretched arm. My new friend was video-ing with her phone, she couldn't believe it. Well I couldn't either. Then the mare ran away.
I asked the locals the next day if anyone ever got near these horses, and they said no one has touched them in 6 years or longer.
Well it was a very magical moment for me.
I guess they are just feral horses, but the experience still took my breath away.
