Hello, you guys!
I just thought I'd check in and let you know that I still think about you, the horses, and this board every day, although I haven't been using the computer recently.
Its been busy here. My son graduated from HS in June, and we had to fly to my mother's bedside in Indiana the next day. She was near death at that time, but rallied by the time we returned...
Got 38 new chicks on the Fourth of July weekend...Assorted feather footed bantams, brown Leghorns, more Ameraucaunas, Barred Rocks, Cuckoo Marans, Black Australorps. I must have been crazy.
Right after I got the chicks, my beloved rescue kitty, Cinder, went into kidney failure. After two weeks of slow drip IVs and other tests and treatments, I finally had to let her go. Completely broke my heart.
Two of my bantam chicks got gimpy legged. Off to the avian vet we go...
one had a leg injury and got anti-inflammatories for her treatment, and the other had to be put down...looked like she developed Marek's Disease...carefully watching the rest of the flock for this contagious virus. (The hatchery did not recommend vaccination, but you can bet that all my birds will get this shot before they are shipped to me in the future! )
The surviving chick is named Piper, and she is ADORABLE! She'll weigh only one pound when mature. She has a bonded buddy now...another bantam whose tail feathers were being tweaked out by the other chicks. Her name is Pepper...and still refuses to be caught! All of the other chicks are in assorted levels of terror when we are around...(what can I say- they're chickens !)
My Mother passed away just before Labor Day weekend, and unfortunately my hubby was in Taiwan on business when I got the news. We have been back to Indiana for her memorial and funeral. I was so surprised and grateful for the huge number of folks coming to pay their respects. Mother had to move away from our home town ten years ago, and we really didn't expect people to remember an 89 year old woman. She was a true angel and we will miss her always.
My 14 year old daughter is back in school...school started the day of the funeral...so I have missed the first day of school with my kids ever. I feel so out of the loop...
My son leaves for OSU in a couple of weeks...it will be tough to not have him camped out in the basement!
I still have not had my surgery, but now things should settle down enough to get this thing taken care of.
Did you know that geese usually only lay eggs in the late spring season? Someone should tell one of my Toulouse. She didn't come in the other night and I have found her on an outside nest, hidden in a patch of thistles. Guess I'll be putting a fence up around her to help protect her from the predators.
I miss the horses and I miss my friends here on the board. Touch base with me here on this thread- maybe there are other members who would like to tell everyone what's going on in their lives...
Oh, by the way, I am no longer on the staff here, so I can't move threads or things for you...
Hoping to hear from everyone,
Leanne
