Beth didn't get posted here yet, but here is her post from BAEN:
We lost our old stallion tonight.
3+ years ago we took in an aged stallion from Animal Control in the Santa Cruz Mountains, they had him from a surrender when a woman lost her property up in the hills. She gave his name, Rakush, and said he was a 20 year old gelding who was blind and lame. Well.. he turned out to be a stallion, and they had no where to house him, so we took him in.
Rakush was a grand old man, the BEST behaved old man, a total gentleman. We tried to find out who he was, to no avail... he was branded, and a distintive leopard Appy, obviously a foundation sire.... and with a unique name. It was not to be that he would die with his true identity known to us.
Rakush, or Kush as we called him, lived a grand life, growing old in a pasture with a gelding as his friend. He had lost all of his molars and ate only pellets, but shared each meal gently as if on a dinner date, with his gelding friend.
Tonight, we came home from the horse show and saw him sweaty and laying down flat out. He was in obvious pain. We gave him banamine IV, and called the vet, who came right away. While awaiting the vet, Kush man was in horrible pain, but was very stoic. He had a heart rate in the 80s plus, and respiratory rate from 40 to 60s... went from cold to full sweat several times, and once nearly fell down with pain, staggering and stumbling, dragging his feet and falling this way and that... but he finally got thru that, and stood still until Dr Parker came to lay him to his final rest. He passed quietly, with dignity, and knowing love.
We let his partner see him, but Camelot was a little freaked by his smell, as he passed, many gallons of fluid rushed out of his nose, apparently his stomach was very full and distended with nasty fluid.
Fly free Mr Kush man... we loved you... but it was your time... please know how much we loved you. You were a Grand Man.
