Well, at least I can laugh about it now... Last night at 11:30 I was comfortably in bed watching Frasier and icing my ankle that I lightly sprained in a hole in the pasture where I board...ugh...I get a call from the barn manager saying SP was out of the pasture and on the side of Foothill Expressway in Palo Alto! Oh boy! I called Caly, went racing out (hopping on one leg) and got to the scene of the crime where everyone's favorite soon to be two year old mule was happily munching grass on the side of the road. There were two police (maybe highway patrol) cars there, lights flashing and this is a quote from one of them: "What the hell IS that thing?" Officer, that thing is known as a mule! Barn manager brought her trailer around as there was no easy way to get back to the pasture entrance and there was not a hole in the fence. He hopped into the trailer and off we went. Thankfully, he was unscathed, except for being called a " thing"! It's still unclear how he got out, since he loves being with his herd and is not an escape artist, usually. He was calm as could be throughout the adventure, I was the one who needed medication in the form of vodka when I got home! ;D Thank you Caly and Scott for immediately coming out to assist me last night. Your support is greatly appreciated!

OMG!!! I'd need copious amounts of vodka to get through it myself, so I'm figuring you did pretty well So glad SP's okay and hope your sprain heals quickly. I must admit, the officer's inability to identify a mule is too funny

I am sorry for your scare - but so happy your kid is ok. I completely understand how you felt - Saturday night after being gone all day and getting ready to head back to oregon - I came home to find that one of my drafties had broken the gate next to my barn completely off the hinges and all 3 of my horses were GONE! Panic does not even begin to describe how I felt. John went running through the pastures with a flashlight just to make sure that they were not still in the pastures(figured that would be best case!) And I immediately got on the phone to the sherriff then hauled rump down to my neighbors to see if they had migrated down with their herd. No luck BUT - the neighbors went ahead and saddled up a couple of horses to help us search. I was crying and flipped out to say the least - so my neighbors level head was a welcomed thing. Well as they went to go get their horses, I went back to my house to grab halters and flashlights while John was hooking up the horse trailer in case we needed it. AND - just as I was heading to start searching while shaking a bucket of grain - here comes my neighbor with all 3 of my horses following his HEAVILY IN HEAT mare lol. Not exactly sure where my horses were - but about time he came out his property with his sweet little mare - here comes my big guy closely followed by his family..... THANK GOD!!!!!! Needless to say - we are replacing all of our noble gates with heavier steel gates with auto lock latches on each. John started on Sunday morning since I had to head back to s. oregon and so far has 6 gates done. Amazing how standard normal horse gear and equipment doesn't work for the drafts! BUT - I understand how you felt. I thought I was gonna have a stroke before we found them. What kills me - That evening before bed I reviewed our security cameras since we have total coverage of our entire property including the barn and as it turns out - Malibu broke the gate and all followed her for a running, bucking romp around the property - ate some of my roses - checked out the deck - then proceeded to hang out under the apple trees for almost the ENTIRE day up until about 20 minutes before we got home. LOL They didnt even leave home - they started to wonder a little after being out for over 8 hours!!! Guess they know that home is where they really want to be..... didn't make me any less nervous about it happening again and making sure that they CANT breakour gates...lol... But did have a small amount of humor! Sara

What do those CHP/Palo Alto policemen know anyway? They're all just City Boys.
A real man would know that SP is the handsomest mule this side of San Francisco!
Indeed, never a dull moment with your critters!

Obviously, those city slicker cops need some better training. They even took a picture of "Thing". Hmmm...tapping into Piopico's idea of a show name of "Thing", I just had an idea: I need to get two mules and name them...drumroll..... drumroll..... ...................Thing 1 & Thing 2 ;D Ok...cracking myself up here. I'm a fan of Dr. Suess, in case you couldn't tell...
